I usually wait until Royal Ascot to kick off, but after two months off, might as well get cracking.

My season will run right up to Punchestown, should be the usual long slog, but looking forward to it after recent break.

First runner for me this season is in the opener at Newcastle, Curfewed. Doesn’t do much winning, but he can be competitive off this mark, and a C/D winner, so happy with 14’s to 4 Places. Still getting my head round the lack of BOG overnight, but I’ll top up that 14’s once it kicks in in the mor I got. I see The Big House as a big threat, and I’ll have a saver on him at double figures.

In the 1710, December Second will be a smaller bet win only.

Seems strange to be kicking off with no Cheltenham Bets, but I’ve happily held back this year. Got really lucky with my early bets last year, and they really paid their way, but I decided to swerve it this year, certainly until October anyway.

Decided to kick off early with The King George though, and hopefully that pair can make it.

    Thanks Grass and Nathan

Brutal start on Day 1 there with December Second losing his life in a freak accident, horrible stuff.

As is increasingly the case, it’s hard to talk about bets after that, but was happy to get money back on the race from The Big House (late ew), but didn’t stop a comfortable losing start, as Curfewed was main bet.

Very interesting to see Justanotherbottle with Kevin Ryan now, and an encouraging stable debut on Tuesday. He should easily pay his way for me again this year. Didn’t bet him yesterday, but only because he was so weak in the betting, but he certainly gave me a scare.

I was quite impressed with Overwrite yesterday, and looks the ideal type for bigger handicaps in the future.

Thought Agincourt ran a screamer on Wednesday, and she’ll definitely be bet again this season.

I was happy to leave it alone after Day 1, and wait till Saturday, but drawn to a couple at Newcastle.

First Saturday back, but not much of interest today.

Had a wee go on Ornate earlier, but no joy.

Only one horse I’m interested in today, and that’s Rock Eagle. Not really myy kind of price, and market vibes are poor at 11-2, but I’ll have a small interest, and I’ve covered The Trader at 8’s, for all its for smallish stakes.

Thanks Grass, nice to get off the mark.

Delighted with The Trader as well, but would’ve preferred the double figures from Friday Night, but the lack of early BOG is tricky.

Might as well have a go again today, and there’s some interesting sorts running.

Taken some of the early odds, but still wary of the lack of early BOG, so there’ll probably be a lot of “top ups” this year when they go bigger, or “get outs” as they go too big.

At Haydock, it might not be quite soft enough for Snazzy Jazzy, but 16’s is more than fair with Four Places. He’s a nice sort, done me proud more than once, and I’d be expecting a run for my money. In the last, 7’s looked fair for Midnights Legacy. I was going to go EW, but I’ll be very disappointed if I can’t get a free bet out of him at some point during the race.

Really looking forward to seeing Communique at Newmarket. Was gutted he missed The Coronation Cup, but in hindsight, would he have won? Erm, no. Took 4’s once he swerved there, and even the 9-4 just now, looks ok.

I’ve got The Ebor in mind for one of my faves, Protected Guest, but if he’s to figure there, he must run well here. He ran a strange race here last Spring, but it at least showed he acts here, and I’m hopeful of a run for my money. I’ve taken some at 25’s, but the way it’s looking, I might sneak better. I loved the way he won at Yarmouth last year, and I just thought they were supremely confident with him, suggesting there might be even more to come. It seems a long time since old Master The World was like a cash machine for me. I bet him a couple of times last year, and he was pretty poor. He’s hard to make a case for here, but I might just get a lay off of him, and I’ve had a wee go at the 30’s, he’s on such a good mark, but obviously not going mad with Protected Guest the #1.

Zhui Feng is a horse who’s let me down more than once, but 14’s big enough here, off his current mark, and Perrat/Crowley combined well on Friday.

The 1000 Guineas really isn’t my type of race, but I took 8’s and 10’s for Love the other day, and she’ll surely be a free bet in this. An interesting runner for me is Boomer. She did me proud here last season, getting me my money back and more in running, and I’m trying again here. I’ll just take the bigger exchange odds, and I think she could figure for a while.

Over at Lingfield I’ve thrown in Pawpaw at 8’s, off a possible lenient mark, while Oslo is interesting, but I’ll watch the market.

One interesting one at Lingfield could be Wilson. Very hard to recommend on recent efforts, but there have been glimmers Of hope, and if he could actually break well for once, I might chance him in running.

With this many running, and with it being earlier in the season than I like for this type of nonsense, then I will be trying to claw Stakes back on all of them, even Communique, and if he shortened enough, I’d consider before the off.

Snazzy Jazzy 16’s EW 4 Places.

Very happy with that yesterday, and decent enough start, better than I expected anyway.

First the bad. I topped up on him when he hit 33’s, but Protected Guest was a bit flat, but I’m still sticking by him. Master The World was poor again. I’d love to say I’ll not bet him again, but I’m not certain.

I never got a chance to lay Communique, and he really disappointed me. Boomer was just a bit of fun, but still a waste of a few quid.

Things got better with Pawpaw and Zhui Feng, who were both free bets, comfortably getting my money back on the pair of them.

The day was really made by Love, Midnights Legacy, and good old Snazzy Jazzy.

Delighted with Love, and I thought she was the winner from a long way out, and chuffed to get the 8’s and 10’s. It was a different story with Midnights Legacy, and what a ride to get him home.

Snazzy has been a great horse for me, and having topped up at the 28’s, I was very very happy to see him nab fourth. Goes without saying I’ll bet him again this year.

Last but not least is Wilson. Initially frustrated, as he was 28’s when I put him up, but I wasn’t the only one who clocked him, and he was best priced 16’s when I clicked the gamble, and he was single figures before the off. I had to ditch the plan, and back him there and then. Nice 16’s EW, and he should’ve won, but I’ll take it, for all I’d have loved the 28’s.

Usual rules for me, if I have a really good day, got to keep going.

At Haydock, I think that Production has real possibilities, and the 14’s to four places, is worth chancing for his new yard.

As Greenasgrass already mentioned, Southern Hills is well worth a look at Naas, and 13-2 looks a fair price. Possibly too good a price to be true, but I’ll take it.

I’ve had some fun with Boom The Groom over the last few seasons, but over a year since I bet him. I’ll hopefully get bigger than 8’s tomorrow, and I think he has a better chance than the odds suggest.

No joy the other day, and thankfully with the way the others went, Southern Hills didn’t take his chance.

Smashing card at The Curragh tomorrow, and in the finale, not for the first time, I’m drawn to Latrobe and Numerian. I think it’s stretching it for Joseph O’Brien to have this as a big target for the pair of them, so I’ll take a chance that Numerian is his main hope.

He really paid his way for me last year, for all he was frustrating, and he finally got his head in front last time out. I think there’s more to come, and I thought 8’s a fair price.

I’ve also taken a chance on Katiymanm in The Irish Lincolnshire. Record is acceptable when first time out, and though it’s hard to believe that there won’t be a good few in there who’re less exposed, I’d be hopeful he can make the six.

I’ve thrown in the O’Brien lesser lights, Hong Kong and Toronto into the perms, along with Pettinger at Wolverhampton, who looks just the type that the trainer can surprise with, and had a few quid alone at 33’s EW.

Happy enough with that yesterday, money back safely for Numerian, and Pettinger did the business at a nice 33’s.

I’ll obviously be following Numerian more often than not, but Pettinger will win for sure, but I’ll only try him at a price.

There were excuses for Katiyman, but even before being hampered, I’m not sure he’d have featured.

Had a wee go there on Chatez there in The Diomed, but he was well beaten.

Only other I fancy betting today is Jon Ess in the 1815 at Curragh. Big price, been in decent form the last 12 months, and 10lb claimer up. Had a few quid on.

I really didn’t want The Mouse Doctor to sneak in to the 1815, nor Sheisdiesel for that matter, so no option but to cover them.

I’ll have lays in place for the three of them, and hopefully a couple of them can be close at the business end.

I’ll have horses run worse this season than Jon Ess did, but there won’t be many.

The other pair ran ok, but didn’t scrape a penny back.

Definitely not in the mood to bet after that, but there are a few I’ll be watching at Doncaster. I was tempted with Orvar, but I’d like him a few points bigger. Two real favourites in El Astronaute and Euchen Glen running. Astronaute is maybe a bit short, and Dakota Gold looks a worthy favourite. Euchen Glen was a real money spinner for me two years ago, and he’ll hopefully come on for this after his setback.

Really happy with that trio on Sunday.

Orvar ran a cracker, and El Astronaute won easy. If I’d known he was going to hit 9-2, I’d have bet him, but he’ll come again.

As for Euchen Glen, everything appears to be in working order, and I look forward to him later in the year.
