Gamble nearly landed at Fontwell; Sixties Idol [Sheena West again] nearly wins. 7/1 but was 50/1 last night. First time tongue tie.

Thanks Grass, absolutely chuffed with Top Othe Ra, and as I said, it was a fair bet for me, and when I’m betting at those odds, I get a bit nervous, as for me, 9-2 is the equivalent of an odds on shot lol. Really rate this horse, and can easily see him defying another rise without too much difficulty. I wasn’t too disheartened by Light That, and he’ll be risked again before the seasons out.

After the win from Ra, I topped up on my other main bet, Rathlin Rose, and I managed to green out, as he looked the winner until 2 out, and was happy to escape with a profit on the race.

In the big race of the day, The Greatwood, I was already in profit, though Old Guard placing at the 28’s was the icing on the cake, and after years of losing on the race, it was great to come out in profit for a change. Less said the better about Jenkins and Project Bluebook, the better, and I tipped Bluebook at work earlier in the week…….can’t wait to go back.

Tynecastle Park was terrible in the opener at Cheltenham, but I was counting the place money, at the very least, for Rebel Yeats, as he simply cruised into it at the top of the hill, but he folded tamely, and was annoying as I had topped up on him before the off.

Swamp Fox came up well short (as I kind of half expected), and with the resurgent Faugheen back on the scene, I’m going to put a line through my Champion Hurdle Book, as the market had a stale look to it anyway, and doesn’t look the season to be trading big outsiders. I’ll take the hit just now, as it had been stop start anyway, and as well stopping when there’s not much money down.

Small each way return from Cliff House, and a loss on Getoutwhenyoucan, but it was the latter who caught the eye, and I will definitely bet him next time, hopefully back over fences.

Another good day then, and obviously helped by being ahead in The Greatwood before the tapes went up, was a big help, though Top Othe Ra made a big difference.

Can’t believe I came out ahead the whole 4 days, but going to enjoy it, as, as I had said before, took a few harsh beatings at this 3 day meeting. No doubt about the highlight, and it was What A Moment on Friday, that finish nearly finished me off.

Very pleased to take a step back now, and hoping for a very quiet week, but I’m really hoping Bachasson can make his seasonal debut at Thurles on Thursday, and if he does appear, I hope he doesn’t make me look daft. I know how this’ll end.

Little Ding Ding nearly won on the flat today; got hampered at one point which didn’t help with her being a titchy little thing, but the winner won it well and Ding Ding came second. I don’t think there’s ever been a horse with a name that it’s so satisfying shouting for when she tries to make up ground at the end of a race. Pam Sly let me down totally today, though; don’t think I’ve ever known her have 3 runners in one day either. Hadn’t realised that Kim Bailey had a virus in the yard last year so some of his horses are now quite well handicapped. And have a new conditional jockey to follow; Callum Bewley. Rode a fine race today to win on Hey Bob.

Totally forgot to watch the race Moe, hopefully next time she’ll be a bigger price, and I can get a wee punt on her as well.

Yeah, thought I read that about Bailey somewhere, I like that kind of angle, and I’ll pay extra attention to his now, whenever he’s got one in a race I’m betting in.

Well Moe, considering your past record, I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on Bewley. Just about to hit the hay, but I’ll give the Hey Bob race a look.

She was favourite [or second favourite]; don’t think she’ll win under either code from now on with her weight going up, but it’ll be interesting to see how she fares if she perseveres with her flat racing. I presume they can’t increase her OR because of her tenacity.

There must be a race in her somewhere Moe, I’ve watched the race now, and she still had plenty behind her, wouldn’t be giving up on her yet.

Very quiet week as planned, and hands were kept in the pocket. Highlight undoubtedly though was one of my big hopes for the season, Bachasson, putting in a very nice round at Thurles yesterday. I’m really hoping he can continue to progress.

Not the biggest betting Saturday for me, but a few nice sorts out and about, and hoping for a win or two, but the way things have went recently, I won’t complain if I draw a blank.

The Betfair Chase isn’t a big betting race for me, and once More of That wasn’t going, who I had a couple of pounds on, I was happy to give it a swerve. I would love to see Outlander win it, for the sake of my Gold Cup Book, but watching brief only for sure. One of those races where it seems so much simpler not to have a bet. I much prefer the supporting race, The Stayers Hurdle, for a punt, and went for Sam Spinner Ante-Post at 11’s. Don’t think he’ll be top class, but he’s progressive enough, and his run at Chepstow last time was solid. Very disappointed if he doesn’t place, but again, not the biggest bet. I’ve added The Dutchman each way at 16’s with 6 Places available. He’s a an unusual one, having made the journey from Sandy Thompson to Colin Tizzard, but they’ve reportedly worked on his wind, and his chase form I thought was good enough to see him involved anyway.

Elsewhere on the course, and bookending the card, I like Midnight Shadow in the opener, and taking a chance on Cloudy Too in the last. I really have liked Shadow him since his debut win, and though I’m not that happy putting my “Midnights” up on this thread, I’m hoping lightning can strike after Malibu last week. 13-2 seems fair, not the biggest bet to kick things off, but hopefully he can take the pressure off. Cloudy Too has won me a few quid in the past, and though he seems to be regressing slowly, he does love it round here, he’s on a lovely mark, and in a tight market, he seems to be miles the best value at 16’s.

Only a couple of others on the go. By far my biggest bet of the day will be Ascot. Frodon is simply too big at 12’s. His run behind Might Bite last time was excellent, and it’s certainly as good a run as any of the others in the field have managed. Those ahead of him in the betting have some nice runs to their names, but Frodon at 12’s, really, that just looks wrong.

I’ve also taken a chance on Flaxen Flare at Gowran Park. 9’s is too big, and though Min is a very nice horse, and will surely win his share of G1’s, he hasn’t, yet, justified the hype. Flaxen Flare is race fit, and can hopefully get the better of a rusty Min. That’s what I’m pinning my hopes on anyway.

As mentioned, Frodon will be the biggest bet of the day, but will be fairly modest stuff otherwise. I’ll probably do a few small stake perms, with the likes of Mahlermade, A Good Skin, and Palmers Hill on there. There all too short on their own, but Mahlermade threatened last time, while A Good Skin was decent for a way at Carlisle, and back down in class, he should go close. Palmers Hill has to be mentioned as he looked so bloody good last time.

Thanks Grass, very very happy on Thursday, he really won that nicely, as he did last time out as well. A wee bit surprised that he didn’t get much attention for it, but I was happy anyway, and really hopeful that he can take a nice pot this year.

Thanks Flyers. Yeah, big fan of Cloudy over the years, and had some decent lifts from him. I’m thinking he might just be regressing, but he’s one those horses who owes me nothing, and I can’t desert him at those odds.

Good luck with yours today, but just clocked your picks from yesterday, so if in that kind of mood again, you won’t need the good luck, well played.
