    Musselburgh Gazette 05/02/2018

Amazing scenes at yesterdays race meeting, where police were called to deal with a mystery, t-shirt clad racegoer.
As the horses in the 3-45 came into the home straight, the crowd witnessed a real spectacle,as the unknown gentleman was spotted running up the home straight, making what onlookers described as “howling noises”.
As one wag commented “he overtook the whole field bar the winner, but for a slight mistake at the last,he would have got up close home, only the fact he wasn,t gelded swung it”

Eyewitness reports say he was arrested shortly after the winning post, where the howling was replaced with cries of “come on the wulf, come on the wulf”.
    Police are appealing for witnesses.

Commentator….”Here comes the Cognac, still swinging away”

Funny old game…..anyone watching that horse last year, looked awful at the time, amazing recovery to see what he did sunday, and a real tonic for your GC book…..WD

Master Of Irony pulled on race day….long way to go,wonder if he did make the journey, expensive trip for a nonner, would be nice to know how he compares to Project Bluebook at home, radar that one.

Interesting ride on General Principle….jack up top seemed far from terrier like once leaders kicked on,any ideas where that might go,and does he need it soft?Thats a nice mark he looks to have.

lol, swinging away, I like that Flyers.

Wish I could answer about the journey, but no idea. Certainly as soft as I’ve seen it at Musselburgh. Definite radar if Bluebook runs well on Saturday. That can’t be certain, but encouraging for my bet that Hughes is already booked up.

Edwulf was a massive result for my book, and if all well in the lead up to The Gold Cup, he’ll pay for my book alone, though haven’t laid a copper yet. Chuffed with that bet coming in on Sunday as well. I’m happy to have him onside, even before Leapordstown. The only one to get close to a “fully tuned up” Tiger Roll, is good enough for me, and fingers crossed.

Long term fan of General Principle. Always liked him for Aintree, but I just wonder if he could make an impression in The Brown Advisory Plate…………………a race where I haven’t had a placed horse in about 15 years.

Funny that you should mention General Principle. I was just looking at a list of the horses that ran in the Chanelle Pharma H’cap. It was mentioned on W Hill radio that it was a race that threw up National horses, so I made a point of writing down the horses that placed, which were Last Goodbye, Viex Morvan [sp], Uncle Danny and General Principle and I was going to pin their names up by the computer so I wouldn’t forget them….

Moe, Vieux Morvan is my biggest winner in my National Book, if not my biggest fancy. Could have done with him winning on Sunday, as I doubt he’ll get in now, but I can live in hope. General Principle is a smashing horse, and he’s got a good prize in him before the seasons out. I think.

I did look at Vieux Morvan I think but decided he didn’t have a high enough OR.

Yeah Moe, needed him to win on Sunday to make it, Last Goodbye (who I bet in The Troytown) broke my heart there. Hope they keep him in anyway. Looks like an ideal candidate for The Topham, and I like the way O’Brien prepared Katnap for it last year.

Well no joy from Project Bluebook or Kayf Grace today. Bluebook was the greedy bet, and had a few quid on it, but he was beat before the start, when the rain came, and it was clear that the ground was soft to say the least. He looks perfect for The County or Scottish Champion Hurdle, though he’s not one to go mad on, and although I’ve a couple of quid on him NRNB, I would imagine that’ll be that. More disappointed with Kayf Grace. I thought she’d handle that, and she was never sighted really.

Still, another quiet Saturday, and bar a couple of quid on Cogry (what was I thinking at that trip), I was happy to sit and watch.

Real bittersweet moment with my horse of last season, Native River, showing just how good he is at Newbury. He was never a price I could get involved in this year, what with those I had already bet, and the setback hanging over him, but if sound, he was always going to come into contention. Easy to forget the scare they had with him a fortnight before The Gold Cup last year, when he bled, and if not for that, and maybe a slightly more positive ride, he would have won. He’s a big danger to Might Bite now, and if he wins, as much as I’ll be chuffed for him, and happy enough to have called it a couple of years back, it will also be another “Don Cossack” moment for me.

Last Sunday worked out well, with Edwulf and Beyond The Clouds doing the business, and not for the first time this season, I’m waiting till the Sunday to have a go here and there.

Not that much doing at Ayr, but in the 1630, with Brian Hughes up, old Gibbstown looks to have plenty in her favour, and recent form wouldn’t concern me. A bit of 9’s here and there.

This Exeter card is normally a cracker, but like much of this NH Season, the fields are disappointing. Very early last season, I had Solomn Grundy down as a potential Pertemps horse, but it didn’t work out. Can’t remember if I’ve ever bet him before, but I might just chance him tomorrow, as he takes in The Pertemps Qualifier, and looks fair at around 9’s on recent form. I have to include old Pete The Feat in the perms, and if he continues to drift, I might bet him on his own.

Over at Punchestown, really looking forward to The Cross Country, with two old favourites in there. Enniskillen is a regular of mine in these races, and rock solid round here. 28’s is actually generous, though the 40’s for Sammy Black might not be. He must be up against it here, but still good to see him back, and I really did think he was destined for the top, before injury intervened. More than happy to have a fun bet on the pair, but in reality, Cantlow wins, as they normally stick Nina up on the steering jobs.

Also making the perms at least will be Riders On The Storm, and Georges Conn. I sensibly drew a line under the Ryan horses a couple of months back, but after his run last time, at 9’s, Georges is worth one more go. I think I said that last time.

Main bet of the day will be Thunder and Roses in The National Trial. Anyone familiar with my waffle on here, or Big Races, will know what I think of this horse. I bet him more often than not, and he rarely runs a bad one (though he did for me a couple of months back). Everything in his favour tomorrow, and 25’s is more than fair with 5 Places up for grabs, and I may cover the 6 Places with Skybet. Old Nothing Gained favourite Mall Dini is in there, and I don’t know what to expect tomorrow. On at decent prices for The Kim Muir, and NH Chase, so sneaking a place will be more than enough for me. I’ll cover Folsom Blue in the forecasts.

Smashing race that National Trial, and hopefully Thunder can repay my faith, and patience.

Really got away with it last week with those two winner, proper stopped the rot, but still not going mad tomorrow, and will be mainly perms. Still not really “feeling” it just now, and will probably be low key stuff for me now until Cheltenham.

    Morning Wise One

Decent looking trial,Thunder and Roses was my main play Aintree last year, not a lot to say after what happened, hoping he gets another chance this year.
With that in mind, not sure if he will have the handbrake off, that was an eyecatching run in the thyestes. From the same race Woods Well ran just as well,no bet for me due to giggi everywhere,WW if gun to head, certainly one to replay whatever scores.

    GL with yours today.

Spent an hour looking through Ayr and Exeter before reading this, Bobby, and alighted on Solomn Grundy and Pete The Feat too! The only other one at a price is Diamant Bleu (11/1) in the Exeter 4.40, if improves for fences, bottom weight with 7lb off, sights lowered, not convinced by Le Rocher and Rayvin Black over fences, like Allysson Monterg but put off by long absence at 6/1, Brelan D’As may pull too hard on ground, Hobbs (Verni) still woefully out of form.

Good news for me then Chris. Couple of fun punts before I head to work, and the pair look to have a decent chance.

The Le Rocher race isn’t really my kind of thing, but the price on Diamant Bleu is, so I hope he does the business for you. Along with the other pair of course lol.

Yeah Flyers, so unlucky at Aintree. I went for Rogue Angel on the day as my Giggs runner, but could easily have been Roses. He took to it nicely, and one of my pet hates this, was credit with an “UR”, when it really should have been “BD”, there are no words to how much that kind of laziness annoys me. Annoys me almost as much as The ITV Camera angle used when Roses departed. If you were watching it on ITV, it was there one moment, and gone the next, whereas RUK caught the whole moment perfectly.

Love the horse, and he’s normally bet more often than not, and he always gets a good word here. I think 141 is on the cusp for Aintree, and a place here would be smashing, and could make all the difference. Very much an each way play, and the 25’s was welcome.

Run of the mill day then, but bar a mistake, Riders On The Storm would have won, and it was a solid run from Solomn Grundy (so close Chris). Very pleased to see a return to form from Gibbstown too, and it was good to get the ew perms in at least. I’d rather not mention what they paid lol

Focus of the day for me was obviously Thunder and Roses, and I was very disappointed. I bet him to place, and that was just poor. I refuse to believe he’s “gone”, but that run was too bad to be true. I was gutted when I missed Folsom Blue in November, but no such feelings yesterday. I didn’t bet him (bar the perms), my current strict staking meant I couldn’t really justify 2 go’s in the race, but I fair cheered him home, and that was everything I love about him. Just a smashing horse.

Flyers, what was your thoughts on Thunder and Roses?

Evening Fella…….Decent day for you I suspect, well played.

Thunder And Roses……If he gets in,I will be with him come April. After last year, I get the feeling this has been the target all season, everything geared towards Aintree.Another offload from the hughes yard,do not think we have seen the best of him yet, plenty form on decent ground, and plenty positives in spring looking back.Interesting to note he has been claimer ridden every race since last years national, one month break last year, expect a run early march somewhere to keep him ticking over, probably at home.

Not had a wager in any of the Cheltenham/Aintree markets, the festival like most, has been my favourite meeting for as long as I can remember, did not miss a festival from mid eighties to around 5 yrs ago.My fear this year is the ground, judging the most recent meetings, pretty sure they have drainage issues,or they have been over-watering at some point.Minimal rain at a couple of meetings, and its gone heavy overnight, minefield for anyone looking to play ante-post.

5 Day decs is where the real work starts, and that for me is when I might go NRNB,if I fancy something that has multiple entries, which many will have.Be good to exchange some views next few weeks, like yourself, plenty on the radar for the handicaps, but I do not want to take up your thread space, ideas?

Time of the year where sitting on the hands advisable, plenty to look forward to.

    Take it easy.

Yeah, decent day today Flyers, had Donna’s Diamond at 20’s last night, and Regal Encore 9’s today. Gutted with Three Faces West, he comes with health warnings with his jumping, but he’d have won that today. Still 2 out of 4 ain’t bad, and the less said about The Flame at Wincanton the better. He was pretty poor, and a strange choice. Even before the off, I was questioning myself lol. Mind you, after a very very quiet six weeks, enjoying getting some winners on the board.

Yeah, that makes sense, the hesitance over The Ante-Post. My number of selections is probably the same, but the money staked, bar The Gold Cup, is significantly down on previous seasons. I’m due a proper beating at Cheltenham, and if winners are thin on the ground, gonna make sure it doesn’t hit me hard in the pocket. Totally agree with the ground concerns. I don’t care what they give the ground as officially, for the last two seasons it’s looked like gluepot conditions every time they run from November to January. Fairly sure that wasn’t always the case.

The other concern I have with the Ante-Posts, and I’m sure I’m not the only one who thinks this way, but if you get too hung up on some horses AP, then it can lead to you missing one on the day. Can’t bet em all, and I’m definitely more guarded.

Mind you, very happy with my AP position overall. I made a very nice profit last season on most of my books before the tapes went up, particularly The Gold Cup, and although not likely this season, I’m close to at least Greening Out on most of them. There’s a couple lurking in my Ante-Post books that I’m hoping could be overlooked horses, and everything crossed for a good week.

Talking of reducing stakes, well The National is the perfect example. Biggest race of the year, and I normally bet accordingly, but only 25% of what I normally bet. Going to enjoy it more this year, as My three favourite horses in training, Cause of Causes, Tiger Roll, and Seeyouatmidnight potentially in the one race, is something to savour for me, and I just hope they all make it. Thunder and Roses is miles better than what we’ve seen, and he’ll be given another chance in the spring. The good news is that I won’t jinx you at Aintree lol

Oh no, if you want to talk handicaps at The Festival, this is the place to do it, any handicap talk will always be welcome on this thread. Although I’ve swerved the handicaps Ante-Post this season in the main, they’re a big focus of my attention, and I love it. Anything you have, I’d love to hear it. A couple I haven’t mentioned so far, are Ballyandy, who looks a dark one, though maybe too low for The Close Bros, while my old pal Flying Tiger is very very interesting.
