Thanks N, very happy with how it went, won’t be retiring, but nonetheless, decent start.
Hopefully get a few more winners, but anything else a bonus now.
March 17, 2016 at 01:33 #1238252After a very good Day 1, Day 2 was very up and down, though a day in the pub watching the racing can’t have too many downs.
The Neptune got me off to a flier, having decided to have a go with Yorkhill when he hit 3’s, and a few additional quid at 50’s each way on Itsafreebee was the cherry on the top. Can’t take too much pride in betting Yorkhill, but was over the moon with Itsafreebee, he’s a horse I thought was a bit underrated, so happy to see him repay the faith. Nicely ahead after Race 1, and thought I was in for a really good day.
Then the wheels came off.
Been saying all winter that Seeyouatmidnight should be going JLT, and not surprisingly, he emptied out very quickly in The RSA. He just doesn’t get the trip, and though he might get it in time, it was highly unlikely to be in this years RSA. Shame, but at least no excuses, and he’s just short of what’s required at this level.
Few losers after that.
Well, onto The Bumper, and agonisingly close with Battleford, another very narrow defeat after The Fred Winter, but at least no excuses, and he was given a a cracking ride. More importantly, he got me a right few quid back each way.
As I said, day in the pub, and Bangors on the TV, and I tell everybody (drink is kicking in) that Midnight Tour will win the last at Bangor, so my Battleford winnings, along with a good few quid from the regulars in the pub go on to her, and she duly obliges, turning a so-so day into a brilliant day.
Very definitely down on the day at Cheltenham though, with The Coral Cup particularly expensive, but Battleford & Itsafreebee, not to mention Sprinter Sacre, made it so much easier to bear.
Still ahead after 2 days, but sadly not talking telephone numbers
March 17, 2016 at 02:28 #1238254On to Day 3 now, and easily my favourite day of The Festival. Very happy with my bets (bar The Ryanair) coming into the day, and don’t plan to be putting on much on top of my Ante-Post bets. As with the other days, I’ll start off with the big race of the day, The World Hurdle.
World Hurdle
Spent most of the winter with a green book on this thanks to getting Aux Ptit Soins up to 100’s then laying off much shorter, but a few quid in the red after chucking a fair few quid at Saphir Du Rheu. It looks a decent renewal, and very hard to crab Thistlecrack, so no more bets in this, and I’ll watch with everything crossed for the Nicholls pair.
Bet – No betJLT
Nothing doing in this race, though it is one I enjoy. Very keen on Outlander, but at the price, I’m happy to sit and enjoy without a punt.
Bet – No betPertemps
Normally a race I like an ante-post punt in, but nothing this year. I will have a bet on the day though, with 3 of them very much on the radar. Put If In Doubt up for this after his Hennessy flop, and he looks primed for a big run, and the 11’s looks very fair. This should suit him down to the ground. I want 2 outsiders to go with him, and Oscar Sam & Westren Warrior, both available at around 22’s, 25’s look like the ones to side with. Been following the pair of them this winter, and from stables who like to target this race, I think they’re both overpriced, with Oscar Sam looking particularly solid.
Bet – If In Doubt, Oscar Sam, Westren Warrior, all Each Way.Ryanair
One of my favourite races at The Festival, but as I’ve said previously, I’ve taken a kicking on it. Had Village Vic as the favourite for this for some time now, but the inclusion of Vautour has changed the whole complexion of the race. Particularly galling is that I’ve said Vautor would go here, rather than The Gold Cup for some time now, but the money was down before the penny dropped. Village Vic is available at a whopping 33’s, but no more bets in this for me. I’ll not be laying either, but as my book is such a car crash, that probably wouldn’t make much of a difference Along with Village Vic, I’ll have Dynaste & Annacotty running for me, but it looks race to put a line through for me, as Vautour should walk it.
Bet – No BetThe Plate
Definitely no more bets in this, though in a race I’ve got an awful record in, I’m pleased to say I should be able to green out quite comfortably, and very happy with my position on it. I’ll try to leave as much as I can on Niceonefrankie, as he’d be a very big winner for me, but I’ll play it by ear. Got all these on my side……..Niceonefrankie 40’s to 46’s & 33’s ew
Johns Spirtit 14’s to 16’s
Kings Palace 29’s to 32’s
Buckers Bridge 30’s to 32’s
Dare Me 70’s
Salubrious 38’s to 40’s
Fingal Bay 16’sAfter laying, a saver on Baily Green
It’s a cracking line up, and with so many potential winners, I’ll happily leave it at that.
Bet – No BetMares Novice
No interest in this race.
Bet – No BetKim Muir
Very very happy coming into this race, and with a few quid on my side after doing a book, and getting nice profit, it’s all about my biggest bet of the week….Cause of Causes 20’s Each Way
March 17, 2016 at 17:52 #1238484Cause of Causes hoses up!!
Well done Bobby!! Top spot!!!
I backed third and fourth!!
But you are de man!!March 17, 2016 at 18:42 #1238500Thanks Raymo, I’m in bits, was a big bet for me at 20’s, and my nap of The Festival. The Kim Muir always comes to the rescue I’m just coming down off the ceiling, and some of the language I used was unacceptable lol
March 18, 2016 at 00:45 #1238594Day 3 turned out very well for me, but first, got to mention Niceonefrankie. He paid the ultimate price in The Plate, smashing horse, and he didn’t deserve that. Gutted.
Anyway, Day 3 started off on a quiet note with no bet in The JLT, and glad I swerved the race, as I would have bet Outlander, but nothing went right for him, and he eventually fell, and he was beat when he came down. Was quite disappointed by him today.
On to The Pertemps, and an absolute disaster for my main bet, If In Doubt. Anything that could have went wrong on the home straight went wrong, and he did brilliantly to get third. Would have been delighted if he had got up, after putting him up for it 3 months ago, but not to be. Should be glad I made a profit off of him, but it was only a few quid, and less said about Oscar Sam & Westren Warrior, the better.
As I said, I’d put a line through The Ryanair, and happy enough with how Village Vic ran, but with Vautour in there, it was a foregone conclusion. Easily the worst race of the week for me.
The World Hurdle was outstanding, and fantastic to see such a good horse take it. Thistlecrack was just awesome, and well worth being a couple of quid down on the race. Look forward to see how he gets on next year. Of my pair, well Saphir Du Rheu, who I actually fancied more than I let on, was a bitter disappointment, but I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s eye was drawn to Aux Ptit Soins. He ran great off the back of a long lay off, and he looks of some interest next season for sure.
Laying off on The Plate was my best decision of the week, and was great to make a decent profit on the race for a change. I even had enough to have a wee saver on my old pal Baily Green, and he ran a screamer for me, and I was getting excited for a bit.
I’d laid off all of my other runners, bar Niceonefrankie & Fingal Bay, and I had a few quid left on Salubrious. As usual, I got it badly wrong, with poor old Frankie running with credit before he came to grief, while Fingal Bay & Salubrious were abysmal. Having laid off all my Kings Palace bet, he nearly had me in tears, as he looked like landing it for a good bit.
Just happy to take the money and run in the race though, as yet again, I don’t even come close to finding the winner, with Empire Of Dirt, never considered.
Which brings me on to The Kim Muir, and there are no words to describe what the win of Cause of Causes meant to me. My Nap of The Festival, and by far my biggest bet of the festival at 20’s Ante_Post, and the fact that I had to take the bull by the horns and add him to the market myself over a month ago, made it that much sweeter. Second year in a row I’ve had a great lift off of him, and it should really be 3 years in a row, though happy to say that I can now put a line through that awful ride he got in this race 2 years ago. The manner of his victory was the icing on the cake, and I just wish Codd had been on him at Aintree last year.
A great end to the day, and put me miles clear on the week, and now staring at one of my best ever Festivals. Should be able to enjoy Day 4 now, but that won’t be possible with my Gold Cup bets………..more of that soon.
March 18, 2016 at 08:58 #1238644Day 4, and it’s all about the big race of the week, The Gold Cup.
My bets on Smad Place 250’s to 270’s, and Carlingford Lough, 200’s to 600’s, have kept me dreaming for weeks, maybe months, and I’ll know my fate in a few hours. Carlingford Lough has already paid his way, with most of my bets this week, being paid for, off of me laying him, but I’ve still got a big sum sitting on him, so everything crossed for him. Smad Place is another huge winner for me, and he’d be an immensely popular winner. I’ve also got On His Own 1000’s, and Irish Cavalier 710’s running for me, as well as an Each Way go on Ofaolains Boy, but it takes a big leap of faith to see them figure.
Trying not to get too carried away, as been here before in The Gold Cup, with the likes of Midnight Chase, Triolo D’Alene, Teaforthree, Holywell, Sam Winner, and Lyreen Legend, all failing to land it at big odds for me, and not to mention the 2 that really hurt, Sunnyhill Boy, and On His Own, both at 1000’s. Both so unlucky in such different ways. I think I’ve discussed those 2 incidents enough on here over the last few years lol
My “Day of the race” bets will be Cue Card & Don Poli. Cue Card has won 3 top races this season, and I’m surprised he’s not shorter. Yes, there’s a question mark over stamina, but that aside, he looks rock solid. Don Poli is on a Festival Hat Trick, and for a horse, labelled “slow”, he still keeps winning, they’ll both do for me on the day.
I’ll have 7 of the 9 running for me then, which of course means that the winner comes from either Don Cossack or Djakadam, and I bet the pair of them for this last season. I had Don Cossack at roughly 250’s to 350’s last season, but they, inexplicably, went for The Ryanair. He’s got a lofty rating, and he deserves it. His chances are obvious. I had a very big bet on Djakadam last year. When he won The Thyestes, there were many crabbing that prep, but it was the perfect prep for me, and he went so close. His prep hasn’t been as smooth this season, but with them choosing him over Vautour for this, then that’s a tip in itself, and he must surely go close.
A race to savour then, with my bets on Smad & Calingford hanging over me. They would be massive winners, but it’s too good to be true surely, and the ground may just do them. If I’m being honest, I just want it over and done with.
Bet – Cue Card & Don PoliTriumph
I’ve no interest in the race, and haven’t had a bet in it since Zarakandar won. I like the look of Sceau Royal, and he’d be my choice ahead of Clan Des Obeaux.
Bet – No BetCounty
A shame that Townshend got balloted out, but got my stake returned, and I’ll put that the way of Hawk High & Sternrubin. Hawk High is a previous Festival winner, and he’ll love the drying conditions, so well worth the risk at a big price. Sternrubin fluffed his lines in The Betfair, but I have to forgive him, as I think he’s decent, and I’m happy to risk a few quid. Got an Ante-Post interest in this, with Ivan Grozny bet at 100’s to 110’s. This should suit much better than The Betfair, and if in the same form as when he returned from long layoff at Leapordstown, I could see him surprising a few.
Bet – Hawk High & Sternrubin, Both Each Way.Albert Bartlett
No interest so far in this race, and no strong fancy. Gun to my head, Fagan, though I’d love to see Barters Hill, or Shantou Village run well.
Bet – No BetFoxhunter
Never a big betting race for me, though I’ve got a few quid on Victoria Pendleton to win this at 66’s, so that should give an interest………for a while. I put this bet on last September, and some feat for her to get here, but surely next year will be the year for her.
Bet – No betMartin Pipe
Unusually for me, no Ante-Post bet in this, but plenty to get stuck into on the day, I want to keep my good record going in this. Main fancy is Jetstream Jack, but I’ll also be siding with Ibis Du Rheu, and Bivouac. Not sure how to approach them, but I’ll give them a fair bet, with the only “fly in the ointment” being the WPM trained Urano…….what is he doing in here? A strange one, and a good chance I might have to include him as well, I’ll give him a good look first, and may be in running.
Bet – Jetstream Jack, Ibis Du Rheu, and Bivouac, all Each Way. Urano (Possibly)Grand Annual
Not a great race for me, with Savello my only winner in recent years. I put Workbench up for this before Christmas, and I’ve got him up to 100’s. I just think they’ve kept a bit back with him, and he likes the track, so at those prices, he’s a big winner for me, and I’m fairly confident. I’m a huge fan of Rock The World, and I deliberately left him out of my Ten To Follow this year, and didn’t want to jinx him. He was a cert to make the frame in The Arkle, but interesting that they’ve opted for this. Big fancy for both here, and Punchestown, and happy having him up to 21’s. I like a JP runner on my side in this, and Eastlake looks the obvious one, but he can only be given so many chances. I bet him in this last year, but he was given a brutal ride, and he finished second. I may split a few bob with him and The Saint James, who looks interesting at a price. Last years winner, Next Sensation, looks a big threat to all.
Bet – Eastlake & The Saint James, both Win.March 18, 2016 at 11:31 #1238687thanks for these VTC helps with my PP,any chance if you are about adding another for me in the 2nd race,as i will put three in that
thanks
March 18, 2016 at 12:19 #1238710No worries N, All Yours & Great Field look solid enough, and you should get a decent run from them.

March 19, 2016 at 17:18 #1239018Been saying all winter that Seeyouatmidnight should be going JLT, and not surprisingly, he emptied out very quickly in The RSA. He just doesn’t get the trip, and though he might get it in time, it was highly unlikely to be in this years RSA. Shame, but at least no excuses, and he’s just short of what’s required at this level.
Why is it that nobody associated with the horse or in the media can see the horse is a non-stayer? How much evidence do they need?
March 19, 2016 at 17:37 #1239023Quick look over my Day 4 bets, and another pretty decent day for me, though incredibly frustrating with Don Cossack & Pacha Du Polder.
Looking back at the 4 days, it was my second best Cheltenham ever, and off the back of easily my worst Cheltenham las t year, the feeling of relief was great. It’s a long 4 days, not to mention the weeks and month of discussion and study, it really is a slog, and by Friday night I was shattered, seriously.
Don Cossack was a fantastic winner, and great to see a horse win so decisively against proper opposition. As I said though in previous post, I had him at 250’s to 350’s for it last year…..and they went for The Ryanair
Had mixed emotions as he passed the line. Overall though The Gold Cup was a great race for me, I didn’t quite manage to green out before the Ante-Post book closed, but even on the day of the race market, I continued to lay Carlingford Lough, and it worked out superbly. He literally paid for most of my bets over the week, and there weren’t many “deposits” my way. What a difference from last year, when things were very different, I’ll leave it at that.Second moment of frustration was Pacha & Pendleton. Let’s not beat about the bush, she should have won, but there’s no actual sour grapes here, you take your chances with a bet like that, but for the record it was £15 at 66’s I had her, and that would have been the icing on the cake, so close.
I left The Triumph and The Albert Bartlett alone, but you can imagine the horror, when my tip for The Albert Bartlett, Fagan, just missed out at 33’s. I called myself a few names on the run in lol.
Ivan Grozny gave me a decent spin in The County, but I’m so glad I stayed loyal to Sternrubin after Newbury, I managed to grab the 40’s available, for a decent each way return, was very happy with that.
In The Martin Pipe, Jetstream Jack, my #1 fancy was very poor, but Ibis Du Rheu at 18’s was a big winner for me, and I screamed him home. I left Bivouac alone eventually, as he was way too big on the exchanges, and not surprisingly, he offered next to nothing, folding very tamely. I didn’t get the chance to bet Urano in running, as he met all sort of bother, but I reckon he was set for a run, had he not met that trouble, and he doesn’t look a forlorn hope for The Irish National in that form.
The Grand Annual brought it to an end, and Workbench did me proud, and always good to see a long term punt run well, especially as he was more or less unconsidered for it otherwise. I eventually swerved Eastlake (common sense kicked in), as he’s just too unreliable, a moment of clarity told me had no chance. I had a small bet on The Saint James, but the common sense deserted me, and I put my Eastlake money on to Bright New Dawn………..that didn’t work out well. Got a few quid back off of Rock The World, but overall a losing race.
A few “lowlights” from The Festival. The fatalities were hard to stomach, as bad as I can remember, just horrible, though I hope there are no knee-jerk reactions. The whole Ricci/Mullins/Walsh problem has been discussed to death, but it really did sour things for me. I thought I was alone last year when I was a bit downbeat at the same connections taking all the big prizes, but thankfully people are beginning to feel the same way. Not much you can do about it I suppose, they pay their money, but it is a bit of a turn off. The less said about their “merry go round” the better, but there can be no question that a lot of the deception is deliberate, it really is very poor. As I said an another thread, The 2012 Lexus Chase, is your starting point to predict what will happen from these connections, and I stand by that. Walsh, not Mullins will decide who goes where. I got a fair bit of abuse on Friday at a Cheltenham Preview when I said Vautour was “nailed on” to run in The Ryanair, it was inevitable. Anyone who lost their cash on him for The Gold Cup, and anyone who lost money on any of The Ricci runners, has my sympathies.
Finally, and it’s already been put much better elsewhere on here by Ginger, Stilvi etc, but I’ve been saying it for years, The Mares Hurdle, and the inexplicable inclusion of a Mares Novice Hurdle has to be looked at urgently. The faux adulation/surprise from the media at how easy it was for Vroum Vroum Mag & Limini was nauseating, they surely can’t be surprised at how those races unfolded. I mean, for goodness sake, Limini was a certainty for her race back in September, and it was a depressing sight to see her stroll to victory. I took a serious amount of abuse a couple of years back (must have been on Betfair, rather than here, as the abuse was vicious lol) when I had the audacity to suggest Quevega was a “legend” rather than a “superstar”………….there’s a big difference. As much as it’s great to see a horse win the same race 6 times, she can hardly be called a superstar for beating horses who had no right to be lining up against her, time and time again. There’s no question she saved the race, but overall, the race has been a disaster for competitive racing at The Festival, and unless they do something with the conditions of it, it has to go. I feel a wee bit vindicated now that people are coming round to the same way of thinking.
Highlight from a non betting point of view was undoubtedly Sprinter Sacre. The best chasers I’ve seen Denman, Desert Orchid & Burroughill Lad, were still no match for Sprinter at his peak, but I very much considered that peak to be behind him, and I’d confidently written him off. I thought far too much was made of his win in The Shloer, and he wasn’t, as far as I was concerned, a factor on Wednesday. How wrong can you be, it was just fantastic to see him win, and in the style which he did it.
From a betting point of view, no doubt about it, Cause of Causes. I wanted to bet him from November last year for it, when some of the firms priced up every race, I just couldn’t work out why he wasn’t quoted. Very glad I bit the bullet and added him myself before the entries came out, and still can’t believe I got 20’s. The manner in which he did it was just a bonus. This was my number one highlight just ahead of (drunkenly) putting my Battleford winnings on to Midnight Tour at Bangor………and having half the pub following suit, I’ll dine out on that one for a while. The other winners, Minella Rocco, Ballyalton, and Ibis Du Rheu all paid handsomely, as did my placed horses, Sizing John, Itsafreebee, Romain De Senam, Battleford, If In Doubt, Sternrubin, and to a much lesser extent, Rock The World. I suppose I should put down If In Doubt & Romain De Senam as “lowlights”, as they were both winners who got away. If In Doubt would have won by a few lengths, but for meeting all sorts of bother, and I think I’ve said enough about the ride given to Romain De Senam.
Can’t mention the winners, without mentioning the losers. Theinval, Niceonefrankie , Our Father, Workbench & Our Thomas were my bigger losers, whilst only my concerns over The RSA stopped Seeyouatmidnight being a total disaster. I hope they’re very careful with him next year, and don’t overface him.
The Ryanair was a total disaster, no other words for it. Even though getting out of The Plate with a decent profit made a pleasant change, the sight of Kings Palace lobbing along, having laid off every last penny I had on him, was not a nice experience. I really should leave this race well alone, and still no closer to finding the winner of it. Also, calling a few winners, but not betting them as they were too short for me, is maybe something I might have to look at in the future.
Great Festival in the end for me though, but very very glad it’s only once a year, and bar a Lucky 31 I’ll do on The Monday after The National, I am not looking at a Cheltenham Ante-Post book until the autumn at the very earliest, I really do need a break from it, and I’m sure I’m not alone.
March 19, 2016 at 17:50 #1239024I don’t understand it either Stilvi, and to be honest, listening to the “experts” talking about him as a stayer, started to really bug me in the build up, what single race, or single piece of form were they basing this on?????
I spoke to Brian Hughes at a Preview Night about it, and to be fair to him, he gave me plenty of time, but I couldn’t convince him that The JLT had been the only serious option, though he certainly gave the impression that it was more the trainer who sees him as a stayer. Having watched The JLT, I doubt he could have lived with the principals anyway.
Who knows, in time he might start to stay, but in the meantime, there’s little or no evidence to justify a tilt at The RSA this year, and for once, I’m glad I went on record as saying so, as you did yourself.
March 22, 2016 at 16:04 #1239392Well after the success of Cheltenham, time to look forward to a few of the bigger races, as we reach the tail end of the National Hunt Season.
Grand National
When I look at my Grand National “book”, success is not the word that’ll immediately spring to mind here. Not staking as much on the race this season has proved to be a wise decision, as mine have been dropping like flies, with even a few of mine who wouldn’t have got in, getting withdrawn anyway. I was hoping for money returned when they eventually got balloted out, but not to be.I usually get away with this approach to The National, with one horse always seeming to save the bacon in the weeks leading up to it, but can’t see any juicy lays in there, so with Cheltenham money in the bank, I can just afford to let them run. The small consolation being that it’s not a “Ryanair” level of failure for me lol. Strictly speaking, if they caught punters attention, then Pendra or Midnight Prayer could see me lay off for a green book, but that seems unlikely this late in the day. Pendra could head to Fairyhouse on Monday, while Midnight Prayer hardly looks the type to come down much in the next fortnight anyway.
With Our Father withdrawn through injury, that would leave my original main fancies as Cause of Causes and Midnight Prayer, who’re both touch and go to get in anyway.
Cause of Causes 36’s to 42’s
Midnight Prayer 310’s to 350’sThat would leave me with…
Ballycasey 300’s
Boston Bob 140’s to 190’s
First Lieutenant 110’s
Double Ross 250’s to 260’s
Gilgamboa 160’s
Pendra 200’s to 580’s
Rule The World 110’s to 180’sand even a few of them have the look of horses who’ll have other options anyway.
It’s highly unlikely I’ll get involved with anything else before the final decs now, but there are still some very interesting contenders.
Many Clouds, and those at the head of the market have been well discussed, though The Last Samuri does look rock solid at the weights. Guess who added The Last Samuri to the market on Betfair months ago…………and then missed all the big prices. FFS!!!
Of those who’re still available at a price, these look particularly interesting to me.
Ofaolains Boy 50’s
The Romford Pele 50’s
Ucello Conti 33’s
Ballynagour 66’sOn to other meetings…..
Irish National
Only a few days away, and recent winners Bonny Kate, and Empire of Dirt are hard to keep out of the frame. I’m very keen on Another Hero, Double Seven, Lyreen Legend, and Dromnea. To a lesser extent, Golden Wonder & Urano look interesting. I’m patiently waiting to see the list of acceptors
Aintree
The one horse who I’m very interested in at Aintree is John Constable. Well touted during the winter, but I’ve always had him on my mind for this meeting, and should he trap in one of the handicaps, I’d like to be on his side. He looked a spring horse to me, and the type who could follow up in something like The Scottish Champion Hurdle.Generous Ransom has been very disappointing this season, but he’s a horse I’ve had The Topham in mind for, for a while now, and wouldn’t surprise me to see him go well, should he get an entry. The season surely isn’t over with for The Young Master, and should Waley-Cohen be successful in his appeal, then I’d love to see him give TYM a spin round.
Looking forward to The Topham entries coming out, and hoping to see Salubrious and Buckers Bridge in there as well, along with Otago Trail, and Mr Moonshine.
I’ll pay close attention to Nicky Henderson entries for that race, but another horse of his, who could be interesting for other targets, is Theinval. Ran well for a very long way in The Coral Cup, and with the ground beginning to suit him better by the week, he looks ideal to get a win here for the second season in a row.
Ayr
The already mentioned John Constable would be on my radar then for The Scottish Champion Hurdle, but my main focus will be on The Scottish National.I’ll not be in a rush to write off my long term fancy Sego Success, but there’s plenty more on the radar now.
Maybe a bit high, but Native River would love the trip should he head here, while the 2014 winner Al Co is not one I’d be in a rush to write off either. He seems to have retained enough ability, and plummeting down the weights nicely. A horse who really has plummeted both in the weights, and in my eyes after Cheltenham, is Fingal Bay. Hobbs likes a go in this race, and if I seen him in the list of entries, I’d be all over him.
David Pipe is another trainer who likes a good go in this, and his Doctor Harper is an interesting one. Didn’t seem to show his true colours at Cheltenham in The Kim Muir, but if handling the big field here, he’s nicely treated. I’m a big fan of Amigo, and he did show his true colours in The Kim Muir. He ran very well at Ayr last year, and he’s shortlist material. Also shortlist material would be his stablemate Top Wood, who was in process of running a big race in that Kim Muir, when he came down. Still weighted to win in my opinion, and a danger wherever he goes.
Ballykan might be the pick of the Twiston Davies candidates having ran well enough at Cheltenham, and another who ran at Cheltenham who could figure here, is Grandads Horse.
Sandown
Drop Out Joe looks too high for The Scottish National, but if he can finish just down the field in the next at Exeter, then he might come down a couple of pounds, which would bring him into the picture for The Bet365 Gold Cup, a race which also looks ideal for Fingal Bay & Amigo.Punchestown
I’ll have a proper look at Punchestown nearer the time, as still over a month away, but interested in the like of Jett, Minella Foru, Ivan Grozny, Rock The World, Sutton Place, and willing to give Ttebbob another chance.Other Horses
Hoping all is well with Karezak, and his run, when relatively inexperienced, behind Thistlecrack at Ascot, is hard to forget. Hopefully see him soon.Guess Again. Hoped to see him at Cheltenham, but he didn’t make the trip. Interesting that he got an entry for The Grand Annual, which opens up a lot of options for him, if he can go at that trip, and I still reckon he’s a winner waiting to happen. Very well handicapped horse.
