Yeah, missed it too Darren, nothing impressive by the sound of things though, here’s hoping hurdles make a big difference to him.

Had a last minute bet on Aachen VtC; followed the horse for years [not in a betting way] and felt that Venetia had a plan for him. I’m still shaking and the dog is freaking out with all the screaming!

Couldn’t leave him alone today Moe, he was too big, and I roared him home with you. Had more on Mon Parrain, but got place money for him too, though the exacta would have been even nicer. So close, but shouldn’t complain as 2 nice prices. Good to finally catch one of Venetias as well, been a barren spell with her runners.

Only downside was The Druids Nephew, didn’t bet him today as too short, but expected a big run, and he’s one of my Cheltenham outsiders. I know they’ll primarily be looking at Aintree, but even then, would have liked to have seen a wee bit more from him today.

Can just about bring myself to mention it now, but had a sickener yesterday.

As well as the 3 mentioned in The Caspian Caviar Gold Cup, I had Champagne West in there as well, but took him out at the last second. I’ve got Champagne West at 1000’s for The Gold Cup, and I decided at the last moment to leave him out, as I’d be more than happy to see him back in one piece. I got decent ew return on Tenor Nivernais, and had a few quid on Village Vic on the day for a very profitable race, but it left a sour taste in the mouth…………it should have been a 40p Trifecta in there as well, and I did myself out the best part of £600. This was off the back of not betting any of my horses in that Doncaster race, and I really like Sego Success, but he was just too short for me

Chuffed to bits with Rossvoss yesterday, he was 15-2 when I bet him, and he came in at 14’s, doesn’t happen that way round too often. Won it in fair style, and topped off a decent weekend. I stuck Rossvoss down on the shortlist for The Paddy Power earlier in the thread, and had to have a go at the 25’s each way, I was very impressed with what he had at the end of the race, after looking to get niggled down the back straight. 25’s still available, and I’m trying to stop myself topping up, as I’ll want to bet another couple in it, but I might stick with him and Minella Foru at 20’s.

    Paddy Power Chase
    Rossvoss 25’s ew

I’ve went for Houblon Des Obeaux at 20’s ew in this Saturdays Sodexo Gold Cup at Ascot. 2lb lower than when he won it 2 years ago, he’s got to have a chance, he certainly likes it round here. Slight worry that he looked well treated in The Hennessy, but ran no sort of race, taking a few quid of mine with him. I’m also concerned that they might be looking at The Welsh National for him, but at 20’s with plenty in his favour, I’m fairly hopeful. Encouraging to see him as low as 7’s now.

Plenty of dangers though. The market leader Pendra won here very nicely last time, putting to bed any thoughts that he couldn’t stay, and I’m just hoping that he runs a solid race here without quite getting his head in front, leaving him on a decent mark for Aintree, as I’m on him for that at silly odds. Fox Appeal chased home Pendra that day, then ran a decent race behind the progressive What’s Happening, at Cheltenham. Hard to see him too far away.

Vying for favourtism are The Young Master, and Fingal Bay. TYM had a soft unseat at the first in The Hennessy, but with the horse now part owned by the Waley-Cohens, he’s surely Aintree bound, and I’ll take the chance he’s not fully wound up (like stablemate The Druids Nephew) as he looks very well treated for that off 150. A win here would surely make things tougher in The National. Fingal Bay is a horse I really like, and though he’s had a few issues, his first 2 runs this season have been very respectable, chasing home Smad Place, and at 6’s he looks a fair price, as I see him as the chief danger, especially after the stables exploits at the weekend.

Salubrious, trained by Paul Nicholls, has 2 other options this week, and I hope they take up one of them, as there was plenty to like about his seasonal debut at Carlisle. I’d fear him the most out of the entries from the yard, as I think Virak could do with coming down a couple of pounds, and Unioniste was too bad to be true in The Becher.

Virak chased home Wakanda last time, and with the stable in decent form, I’d fancy Wakanda to confirm those placings again, he looks a progressive type.

The Giant Bolster has been given a massive chance by the handicapper, but on the whole, just a few too many questions to answer for me, though he’s surely got one decent prize still in him, I just hope it isn’t this weekend.

If Ma Filleule was mine, I’d let her take her chance in The King George, with her allowance coming in handy there, though she’s more than capable of taking this as well.

Katenko and Gullinbursti both come here off a break, and I’ll pass them over on the back of that, though I’ll shout the house down if Katenko can bounce back.

Finally, my old friend Seefood. I still think he’d have been better staying over hurdles, but interesting how he’ll be targetted now with Dr Richard Newland. I’ve always liked this horse, and still young enough to take a few scalps, and he’s certainly had his moments over fences, to go with a few stinkers. If things don’t go well here, then I’ll keep him in mind for something like The Pertemps

Fingal Bay then looks a massive danger, but hoping Houblon can nab a place at the very least.

    Sodexo Silver Gold Cup
    Houblon Des Obeaux 20’s ew

Having trouble putting up one for The Ladbroke, as I like loads, but off the back of his last run here, taken a chance on Unanimite.

Just as I was about to give up for a while I had a 50/1 winner yesterday! Now in the process of having my usual mug punter bets and losing the lot. raymo’s thread has given me the courage to go for more outsiders.

Outstanding Moe, you don’t get too many of them, do you? Was going to put up a couple on Raymo’s thread during the week, and one of them Turnbury, who was 16’s, went and won @ 8’s. Wish I had, but not half as much as I wish I’d bet it

There have been a lot of big priced placed horses recently but I keep missing them. Often when Elliott is using a claimer over in Ireland.

Couldn’t quite scale the heights of last weekend, though Wakanda was a very welcome winner, at a very welcome price, and kept me ahead. Very impressed with him again, and I think he’s got a few more of these in him. Surely a potential Grand National candidate at the very least, and I’ll watch future targets with interest.

Of the others in the race, well Houblon Des Obeaux cost me a fair few quid for the second time this season, and I just don’t know what to make of him. Definitely no excuses for him, though knowing the trainer I just wonder if there’s something else on the agenda for him. Part of me thinks The Welsh National, however he wouldn’t be able to take advantage of a continually slipping mark in that, and he should go down a fair few pounds for yesterday. I just wonder if he’s another with Aintree on the horizon. Not a race I ever had in mind for him, but if he does actually retain enough ability, and they’re holding a little back with him, then it’s a possibility. That certainly seems the case with The Young Master, who also took in the race, and he looks a cracking price for The National at the moment.

It was a shame to see my old pal Katenko drop out so quickly after a mistake, and I hope they’re just very careful with him now.

2 other horses to take out of the weekend for me, were Sternrubin & Karezak.

The Ladbroke was a cracker, and as said on here earlier, it was unusual waiting out a photo finish, genuinely not knowing who was going to come out on top. I think Sternrubin looks really progressive, and I’d be very interested in him for The Betfair Hurdle, and if he continues the way he’s going, then I don’t think he’d disgrace himself in The Champion Hurdle either………honestly!!!! I just loved the way he battled back yesterday.

Karezak ran a screamer in The Long Walk, and he looks a horse to keep on the right side of this season. I’ve got the Coral Cup in mind for him.

Oh yeah, one last word for Seabass

I did Moe, threw a few quid at him. Didn’t expect too much, his comeback run was poor, but was chuffed to bits to see him win anyway.

Don’t know whether to be elated or extremely worried but got home today to find I’d backed Manhattan Spring at 9/1 and been paid out at SP [16/1]. The worry being that I couldn’t remember backing him. Assume he was a steamer and I’d clocked it and quickly put a bet on as I was leaving the house.

That’s what Corals keep telling me. It’s an eye opener though; I’m currently £11 down overall; better than £111. then again my betting pattern [if one can call it a pattern] would change if I put more money on. Having lost the first £10 very quickly the second £10 has been quite stable even though I’m throwing pennies at outsiders now. The biggest bet I’ve ever had was £5 and that was an owners tip that PU’d. [forgot to say, took a few minutes off from studying racecards to do a few competitions on one of my ‘laidee’s forums, and won £350 of books for my grandchildren…there’s a lesson to be learned there I think!]
