The three sires whose offspring have dominated racing at the classic distances over the last 40 years.
Who was/is best?

Galileo is the best
Saying Galileo is the best is a insult to the other sire’s as it indicates that the other 2 are not incredible stallions in their own right. Northern Dancer gave birth to Sadler’s Wells who in turn has given Montjeu,Galileo etc. But Sadler’s Wells had many many crops to get these great horses.
Galileo with around 7 or 8 crops has done so much.

AlandiIts is simply a incredible list of horses for a Sire that was only getting the best mare’s a few years ago and are now his 2yr olds. The best is yet to come. He will be the bedrock of Darley and Coolmore. The fact is the range of distances and continents as well as colts and fillies he can produce is just remarkable. He is the Storm Cat of Europe.
Already Apollo and David Livingston have shown themselves very promising 2yr olds as-well as Maybe a top class horse. Its just remarkable.
July 18, 2011 at 21:33 #365130Sadler’s Wells is a dominant sire, but his influence seems to be confined to one surface and one hemisphere. Same for Galileo. Northern Dancer sired turf horses, dirt horses, sprinters, milers, and routers, and he is ubiquitous in pedigrees on both sides of the Atlantic. He also single-hoofedly put Maryland Thoroughbred breeding "on the map".
Just looking at Northern Dancer’s direct offspring:

Broadway Dancer
Razeen (India’s all-time leading classic sire, sired 56 Indian classic winners)
Ajdal
Vice Regent (13 times leading sire in Canada)
Lyphard
Secreto
Shareef Dancer
Dancing Count (top Maryland stallion and excellent broodmare sire)

Northern Jove
Hero’s Honor
Dance Number
Rakeen (sire of my favorite timber horse, Bubble Economy!)Northern Dancer had 7 sons that sired 100+ individual stakes-winners.
July 18, 2011 at 21:59 #365135Bit like comparing Jack Nicklaus to Rory McIlroy to be honest.
Northern Dancer by a street.
July 18, 2011 at 22:12 #365137Northern Dancer changed the breeding industry. No contest.
Value Is EverythingJuly 18, 2011 at 22:25 #365138Northern Dancer for me, although his grandsire, Nearco, was also great stallion and his influence on the ND line should not be dismissed lightly.
The greatest European stallion of all has to be Sadler’s Wells. Fourteen times champion stallion is no mean feat.
Gambling Only Pays When You're Winning
July 18, 2011 at 22:30 #365139I am a believer of Galileo. Give him 10 more crops and watch the champions be born
July 18, 2011 at 22:37 #365140Whew, all great sires.
Northern Dancer certainly was responsible for a great line.
If I remember correctly Sadler’s Wells actually preferred a bit of cut himself, and I wonder if that is the reason why he seems to have been more successful with his progeny on turf / in Europe ?
I know this next point will get a load of flak for me, but in hindsight, how wise was Sangster and his connections to tap into this as early as he didJuly 18, 2011 at 22:46 #365141

Northern Dancer, taken worldwide, given this branch and so many others, as enumerated by Miss Woodford. As sire of Sadler’s Wells and therefore grandsire of Galileo, he gets a walkover.
July 18, 2011 at 22:54 #365143how wise was Sangster and his connections to tap into this as early as he did
Was it Sangster or Vincent O’Brien that first identified Northern Dancer as the Daddy of them all Coggy? Northern Dancer was the sire of sires of sires of sires. And the dams did’nt do badly either.
Value Is EverythingJuly 19, 2011 at 02:58 #365148Northern Dancer by a street. The other 2 whilst being great stallions, have only proven successful in the northern hemisphere. Northern Dancers reign stretches over the entire racing world. Galileo has had great start to his stud career but the fact he failed at stud in Australia means he can never be compared to Northern Dancer. Danehill was a better stallion than Galileo, maybe the best of them all. His stats are unparalleled
89 group 1 winners
Champion sire in Australia 9 times
Champion sire in England and Ireland 3 times
Champion sire in France 2 times. That is world dominance like no other. Too bad stallions didn’t shuttle in Northern Dancers time. Who knows what could have been
July 19, 2011 at 03:48 #365149Northern Dancer a "Maryland Stallion of Distinction" http://equiery.com/archives/NorthernDancer.pdf
His grandson Northern Raja also earned that title as a sire of sport horses http://equiery.com/archives/NorthernRaj … nRaja.htmlJuly 19, 2011 at 07:58 #365154Bit early to name Galileo as one of the most influential stallions of the last 40 years, maybe in 10 or so years time.
Danehill has already been mentioned, but no reference to the great Mr Prospector, a wonderful sire and sire of sires. As an individual, I prefer him to Northern Dancer (although this is probably a minority view!).
And what about Sunday Silence, who’s rewritten the Japanese stud book in the much the same way as Star Kingdom did in Australia 50 years ago?
July 19, 2011 at 11:27 #365165Obviously Northern Dancer is superior to the both of the above mentioned horse’s but who know’s how good Frankel and the above mentioned of sire’s.
Are we looking for Sire of Sire’s or just purely looking at their racing record from his son’s and daughters.
It take another 20 years to understand how well Galileo has done in his career. He certainly will be above Sadler’s Wells as has he is out performing him already with his race track results for such a short career.
What about Sea The Stars I hear the crowd shout!

Is the South African champion Igugu the only G1 winner that Galileo sired in Australia? Does anyone know what’s happened to the colt he sired ex Makybe Diva? Bred for far too much stamina, but I seem to remember reading somewhere the colt had made a good start to his racing career.
Re Sadler’s Wells: sire of El Prado who was champion sire in US some years back and who I think sired Medaglio d’Oro, who is a very successful young American sire.
Of the three, obviously by today’s reckoning Northern Dancer is the greatest. But in another 20 years or so, who knows?
July 19, 2011 at 17:56 #365191I take your point Ginge. Whoever made the initial decision – it was a mighty wise one !
