Gorgeous looking horse, Ballabriggs, but finished very tired at Cheltenham and is another Presenting. Missed the 33’s the other week, though, but will probably have to put some money on him. Love Merigo, but not sure that he’ll get into the race at the moment.
January 17, 2011 at 22:55 #336477I hope he’s left a bit over for Khachaturian!

What do you think to Synchronised having a Gold Cup entry, Fist? Is he likely to run or do they think we might have a wet couple of months in the run up to the race?
Can’t see any harm in it. You don’t get many Ten Up years but it can happen. Might be only one horse in it if it same up near unraceable.
As far as running him on good ground goes he’d be tailed off on the way down to the start

Hi Gav, I went in 1989 (Little Polveir’s year). Went into the Grandstand. First the course is massive so unless you’ve got binolucars or the some sort of big screen monitor nearby don’t expect to see much. I saw the start, the middle as they approached the water and the end. The elbow. Unlike its neighbour Haydock (which I’ve also been too.)
For atmosphere though you can’t beat it. I enjoyed myself there and didn’t backed a winner. Although if I’d seen Beech Road in the race before then I would have backed that because had it at 50/1 when winning the Champion Hurdle.
Also saw the parade and Red Rum before he died (obvious) leading the parade.
Went with a small party and most of them disappeared into the beer tent around the start.
Hope you have just a good a time, but hopefully backing one or two winners.
January 23, 2011 at 06:51 #337317You may see more in the County Stand. When I went in 2006 we (my wife & I) were on the Tattersalls Mound (basically a tarmaced slope) of which we saw sweet FA of the race and had to resort to the big screen.
If you get a chance, get there early and walk the course (well, walk the inside ambulance road. Being up close and personal to those big green fences gives you a real sense of both the challenge and the history of the race.
Oh, and be prepared for some eye-opening sights. Let’s just say Scouse lasses don’t feel the cold!
January 24, 2011 at 17:40 #337511Interesting post on the RP website. McCoy apparently being torn between Don’t Push It and Synchronized. He pledged allegiance to Don’t Push It immediately after the Welsh National, but after considering what the weights are likely to be; he’s been having second thoughts. I do reckon he’ll stay loyal to Don’t Push it though when you look at the winning jockeys of the past…
G Lee staying loyal to Amberleigh House, even when he was 14…
Ruby Walsh staying on Hedgehunter, despite his 12:00 burdens two years in a row (and despite him not figuring in ’07)
And of course Timmy Murphy keeping to Comply Or Die despite the big weights and tempting alternative rides.Hell Richard Dunwoody rode West Tip 5 times out of his 6 appearances.
Any ideas on when the entries are announced? The weights are out Feb 15th, but i have no idea on the entry list…

I’m backing Calgary Bay. I said last October I thought he should be aimed at the national, and now they’ve said they plan too, that’s where my moneys going.
January 24, 2011 at 23:39 #337545I normally don’t have a bet until the weights are published. This year already had a bet on Niche Market on betfair and laid off for a bet to nothing after being in touch with his owner and confirming that the grand national is his only target this year.
January 26, 2011 at 18:03 #337767after last years race, i said id stick with niche market

Hi people,
Gav1584 – I’ve been the last 3 years. Love it so much. It’s an unbeliveable atmosphere, it is very busy evrywhere in the course and a bit of a squeeze but well worth every penny. Glad I was there for AP’s first too – tell the great grandkids one day when I’m old and frail!
With regards to antepost – I prefer backing before the weights. It is a big gamble because the weights/withdrawals can screw you, but I feel like alot of the value is lost when they come out and are scrutinised by absolutely everyone. The best situation is backing a few and they all shorten significantly and lay them off. However I always let one ride….all for the big payday!
I like the look of Chief Dan George this year…pulled out when fav for the Scottish last year. Has the Aintree form. I just hope the weights are decent to him!!

January 26, 2011 at 19:26 #337790Funny thing JJM, but they are exactly my betting slips from last year barring a slightly more generous price on BFT. Can’t see him improving on last years position this year though.
Backed them last year and made a tidy profit, and can see them all going well again, think they are excellent value personally, as very likely to run, and very likely to stand up.

Hope you’ve backed him to fall at the first cos that’s as far as he’ll get.If ever a horse should not go to Aintree it’s Calgary Bay
