I’m an admirer of Nicholls, but wondering about his record with horses accepted from other trainers. Thinking about Rouge Vif today, and the O’Sullivan Bloodstock team he got from Mullins. Is it just my impression, or is his record with theses horses poor?

I’ve raised this before , sometimes a change of scenery can spur a return to form but it’s also a change to the regime the horse is use to , Sandy Thomson is a master of this , one day the horse is hunting , the next the beach , Nicholls won’t do this kind of thing and it won’t work with every horse

The way Nicholls operates, so long as his methods work for “most” of his string, he gets the overall results he needs to keep him where he is.

As for Rouge Vif, 2m horse?

Possibly not what you were meaning, but almost every horse Nocholls gets from France has been trained by someone else first.

Master Minded, Kauto Star, Big Buck’s – the last named had run 13 times in France. His Triumph Hurdle winners had both had plenty of time in another yard before he took them over.

Then there was good old Venn Ottery, whose rating went up by 69lbs in just a few weeks when he moved to Nicholls.

Even Denman had spent two years with Adrian Maguire.

AP Venn Ottery benefited from being trained ( owner tried to ) and a tongue tie , the others where all young horses , the point of the thread is he doesn’t really turn around older horses , akin to old footballers , some managers have the black other better coaching youngsters , Nicholls is better with youngsters
