Nicholls or Henderson – who is the greatest?

I went with Nicholls.

Nicholls – 13 trainer jump titles since started training in 1991.
Henderson – 6 trainer jump titles since started training in 1978.

As most have gone for Nicholls, Henderson deserves to have more votes so thought I’d vote for him. Especially as he was once my replacement.

I got a bad cold / flu and had to pull out of the West Berkshire Racing Club team at the Oaksey House Racing Quiz. Nicky was good enough to fill in for me at very short notice.

Hendo the better trainer of hurdlers……if you want a Champion Hurdler, then he is the first (and probably only) port of call in that regard.

But if chasing is you real jam then Nicholls would be the man to go to and yes I know Hendo had Sprinter but Nicholls has won all the top races at all distance be it Kauto Star, Denman, Masterminded, Azertyuiop, See More Business, Flagship Uberalles, Clan des Obeaux, Silviniaco Conti, Frodon, Neptune Collonges, Twist Magic and Tidal Bay. He can also do the job with hurdlers when he gets the right horse but is predominately a chasing trainer.

At the end of the day you couldn’t go wrong with either but I had to give the very slight edge to Nicholls as he is also a 14 time Champion Trainer (the numerical succesor to Martin Pipe) who whilst winning on prize money, more often than not also has the most numerical winners each year as well, even when he might not have the very best horses in the yard to go to war with….to me he is better than Hendo (not really his game) at getting the most out of horses of a lower grade.
