Owen Coyle was definitely offered the Celtic job.
I think the combination of wanting to stay and try his hand in the Premiership, the realisation of the intense pressures any Old Firm manager is under ( having to win every week, allied to the goldfish mentality), plus the limited budget he’d have to work with – all added to him saying no.
I think the Celtic board will take their time and interview various candidates before deciding. I still think Tony Mowbray could emerge as the man in charge.
Keegan – not a chance !
If he couldn’t handle the pressure at Newcastle, he’d have no chance of doing so at Celtic, where managers ( and players) are put under intense scrutiny.

May 30, 2009 at 18:20 #231114I find it very hard to see what Mowbray has going for him. All this talk about playing attractive football but WBA couldn’t ‘hurt’ the opposition and consistently leaked goals. In a season where so many teams had a chance of survival they rarely looked like escaping relegation. I think both team and manager have found their level again.
June 1, 2009 at 18:06 #231413Swansea manager Roberto Martinez has suddenly been elevated as the new favourite to take over at Celtic.

June 2, 2009 at 00:14 #231473You look surprised Himself??
He has done a good job there and in fairness, will be cheaper than Coyle and Mowbray etc. Also, and this will appeal to you "lets be entertained" fans, he plays good football, attacking footy. And as an ex Motherwell player he does have a knowledge of the Scottish game and being spanish, a knowledge of the spanish game.
Granted, he is not the big name you would like to see in the job…but giving younger, hungrier managers a chance is very much the way ahead these days unless you can afford huge salary payments…remember less spent on getting the gaffer means more to spend on players.
June 2, 2009 at 02:11 #231487I think Roberto Martinez would do very well at Celtic. A good choice and could be good for the rest of the SPL as well.
June 3, 2009 at 00:28 #231638A very good choice for Celtic if he can be landed. I was very impressed with Swansea’s Lge 1 triumph and backed them for the Championship at 66/1 and followed them very closley last year.
Although they had far too many draws (due to lack of goalscoring support for J Scotland) they continually outplayed and dominated teams in terms of possesion and shots on goal.
To me this indicates top management without quite the level of players to take it forward, in the SPL he should have competitive players and his style will go down well with the clubs traditions.
Swansea probably played a type of football as least as stylish as Arsenal in the last two years.June 3, 2009 at 15:38 #231739Roberto Martinez or not, I reckon that Tony Mowbray could yet turn out to be the man Celtic want as their manager, and I have backed him accordingly.

… who has apparently been offered the top bunk bed next to Susan Boyle, allegedly.
The man is utterly deluded. Celtic laughed at the suggestion. Wim Jansen totally refuted the story. I tend to think that big Tony’s not too well at the moment.

June 13, 2009 at 17:16 #233686We’ve got our man at last.
Celtic have finally coughed up the £2m to WBA – and I have won quite a few quid into the bargain, having backed Mogga to become Celtic’s new manager with different bookmaking firms.

June 14, 2009 at 09:11 #233812Well done Himself. But is Mowbray the man Celtic need? From WBA to Celtic?
Good luck to him, but it’s a bloody tough job he’s got and is his CV one that inspires confidence? Okay if Celtic were trying to get promotion from Div 1 he could be the man, but…..?June 14, 2009 at 13:08 #233821Well done Himself. But is Mowbray the man Celtic need? From WBA to Celtic?
Good luck to him, but it’s a bloody tough job he’s got and is his CV one that inspires confidence? Okay if Celtic were trying to get promotion from Div 1 he could be the man, but…..?I predicted when he left Hibernian for West Brom that his next job would be as Celtic’s manager. I think he is the best man for the job, given what was avalaible. It was obvious Coyle would want to have a crack at the Premiership and though Mark McGhee ( now installed at Aberdeen ) desperately wanted the Celtic job, his manager’s cv really isn’t that impressive.
Mowbray likes his teams to play good, attacking football, which, if you are aware of Celtic’s history, is something of a pre-requisite at Celtic Park. His Hibs team were very attack minded and managed to beat Rangers 3-0 at Ibrox during his tenure there. In terms of quality, it is fair to say that the SPL ( the Old Firm apart ) is quite poor, so coming from a team (West Brom) with few resources – and who finished last in the Premiership – is no real drawback or indication of how well he’ll do at Celtic. Big fish in a small pond as opposed to small fish in a big pond.
Mowbray is an ex – Celt ( he was the man who initiated the famous Celtic huddle ), as is Peter Grant, his assistant. They know how huge a club Celtic is – and more essentially, what the club is all about. He will command respect among the majority of fans – and he will treat us and press with respect – something Gordon Strachan failed to do during his four years with the club.
His task is an easy one – just finish in front of Rangers. He will though, need a few new better players to do that, but whether our parismonious board give him the money to buy these players, is quite another thing.

June 14, 2009 at 14:21 #233831To be honest, giving what was available, Mowbray is a good appointment for Celtic. And as an Aberdeen fan means we get Mark McGhee.
Mowbray has a knowledge of the scottish and english markets, and with money being quite tight these days, you need a manager who can un-earth a few gems along the way. He also likes to play attacking football and looks like a manager who gets much respect from his players…thats half the battle at some clubs…players who think they are above the gaffer (McGeady).
Time will tell though…
June 20, 2009 at 00:03 #235317Good appointment. He will probably deploy a 4-3-3 going by comments i’ve read. This would probably see McGeady being pushed up which i’ve always thought he could do. For once it will be interesting to watch any friendlies we play to see how the team shapes.
Has to be questions over how he will approach European games though, especially CL qualifiers.
July 8, 2009 at 18:52 #238520There’s big Mogga making his mark on things with the signing of Fortune. Now it looks as if N’Guemo could join for a 12 month loan period. Some folk are saying that we’ve bid £3.5 for Commons, but i don’t believe that.
The best team in Scotland will just get better under Mowbrays reign.
July 8, 2009 at 20:17 #238539Mowbray has got off an the right foot ( or left, whichever you prefer ) straigtaway, and his honesty and openess in relation to what is happening – or is to going to happen, is already winning over even the most hardened of doubters among the fans.
He is a straightforward, no nonsense kind of guy, who unlike Mr. Strachan, is neither patronizing nor flippant, or in any way suspicious of the press.
All he needs to do now is re-gain the SPL title from that other lot across the city ( ) and he’ll become an instant hero at Paradise.
