Ollie Pears makes a good point in todays Racing Post ” A straight mile on all weather at Newcastle won’t be ideal for viewing and it’s going to be a stiff test for lower-grade horses. I can see them walking home in 0-55 races on it.
What an unappetising thought, thanks a bunch the BHA, RUST & ARC.
June 27, 2015 at 08:58 #1116647I can’t see why the Northumberland Plate can’t be run on the hurdle course when the excreble all weather track is laid?
June 27, 2015 at 14:37 #1116900Think they should move the Northumberland plate altogether, switch it and the stakes races to Doncaster.
June 27, 2015 at 14:41 #1116902Isn’t all-weather a safer, more consistent and altogether better surface than turf anyway? It won’t be popular with the fuddy-duddies but I think more courses should be gutsy and make this switch.
There just doesn’t seem to be any legitimate reason to oppose AW surfaces. People keep saying “it’s s**t”, “it’s dreadful”, “it’s going to the dogs” but nobody ever says why they have such violent prejudice against AW. Is it just because it’s different and the sport is moving on?
June 27, 2015 at 15:24 #1116933As has probably been noticed on here, I’m a vocal supporter of synthetic racing, no qualms with it whatsoever. For me it is simply about the heritage and tradition of the race, it was established in 1833 as a summer turf race and I believe that’s how it should stay.
There has been great strides in synthetic racing, pointing obviously to the winter championships we now have etc and I think that is great. But there turf seasons tradition and history is what it is and I do not believe it needs to be altered, certainly not now, there is no where near enough appetite to justify suddenly replacing turf with synthetic racing in high summer.
