Most normal people seem to make New Year’s resolutions covering aspects of their daily lives, so it seems natural for us punters to do the same regarding the activity which takes up most of ours…..
Mine include being more selective in what races I bet on and reducing my betting days, as we are soon to have a new addition (our first) which will ensure punting time is at a premium.
I’ve also resolved to pass on more bets I feel to be marginal value in the hopes of increasing profit on turnover- no more "action " bets in other words.
I further resolve not to bet on events I haven’t studied as I am the world’s worst impulse punter- relates especially to betting in-running, for which a pre-race strategy is essential in my view.
I’ll probably do more ante-post this year as it’s not as time sensitive and should fit in with the demands of parenthood!
As usual I resolve to whip dem bookies when they go non-runner no bet prior to Cheltenham, the greatest concession of the year in my view.December 31, 2007 at 19:40 #132634Well I am going to do similar. For starters I will give myself a budget per month ( I’ve got 2 kids
) When it’s gone it’s gone. Any profit to be banked and the initial amount carried over. (Won’t happen very much!)
Also no bets just because the racing is on, only bet on what I really fancy cos I’ve done my homework…Not clever stuff I know as when the monthly money has gone and a horse I really like is due to run, I can’t have a bet
Also, I will stick to smaller footy accas. I’m too greedy and never win. Might also give up placepots. I still can’t win one.
All this because at the end of the day I lose too much on betting, drink too much and need to spend less.
December 31, 2007 at 20:47 #132643All the best with the impending new addition carvillshill.
A very wise resolution about being more selective – good luck sticking to it, it takes a great deal of self discipline.
I had a similar resolution for many years but quickly went back to the bad habits, usually by the end of January.

Luckily I have kept a note of every bet I have struck since 1996 and after a seriously bad year in 2001 that made me stick to the resolution in 2002. (When I actually sat down and went through the bets I thought what an idiot.) I have, more or less, stuck to it since. It has certainly paid dividends but takes a hell of a lot of will power. I wish you every success in achieving your ambition.
My resolutions are actually not betting related. I want to do all the UK courses in a calendar year – dates are already penciled in. Also I want to do at least half of the Irish courses as well – so Mr O’Leary at Ryanair may get a few bob out of me.
December 31, 2007 at 20:52 #132644Well i was going to bet exclusivley on Betfair..but i got caught up in the”in running” market
enough said.!!!!!!I will stick to Placepots its something i can make money at,and any singles i will do will be each way.
As for those FOBT machines should be banned i never play them but i have a friend who is fighting an adiction with them(and not winning) losing sums of £250 plus a time.
They are horrible horrible machines
December 31, 2007 at 21:32 #132645My new year’s resolution is to start punting.
I’ve had a good few years doin my homework and I think I’m finally ready to start putting my money where my mouth is and see how I get on!!
Wish me luck!
Happy new year, Jonny
December 31, 2007 at 21:44 #132646I compiled a very extensive list of horses to follow this season from various sources and wrote them in a book; did I back them – no – did a lot of them win first time out – quite a few. What was the point of all of the effort in the first place..next year either no list or use the damn thing. Main resolution – even though my knowledge of racing is far inferior to most people on this board, I always get people asking me for tips before the National; from now on I will keep my opinions totally to myself [how many work mates loved the name Silver Birch – oh no says I, he’s got wonky legs]…happy new year everybody! mo
December 31, 2007 at 21:59 #132648Bloody hell we’ve got all sorts on here lol.
I have new years resolutions but not really any from a punting point of view just to retain my discipline really, that is key.
Good luck everyone hope everyone has a very profitable 2008.
January 1, 2008 at 07:58 #132661CH,
To operate more selectively, try imagining that you have to write a hundred words to explain each bet in advance – no need to actually write them down, although that helps if you’ve got the time and if you do, you have something to look back at later that can prove useful.
You’ll be surprised how often you get to fifty words and realise that you don’t actually have a good argument in favour of the bet. It’s an excellent method for eliminating the ‘action bets.
My own ambitions for 2008 – to make a profit and to win a race with each of the four horses due to run in our colours this year.

January 1, 2008 at 08:21 #132662I noticed your grey horse ran well for a long way the other day AP…
January 1, 2008 at 09:18 #132664from a punting point of view just to retain my discipline really, that is key.
Agreed Flash. Discipline and selectivity seem to be the key ingredients to my punting
In terms of number of bets I’ve had my quietest year since becoming ‘serious’ – 341 in 153 races, of which 334 were in handicap chases, 5 in conditions chases, 2 in conditions hurdles and none on the Flat.
Ah my nemesis Flat betting: an interesting experience but…goodbyee
However selectivity does pose the Catch-22 problem of generating sufficient turnover to justify the work involved without exceeding staking comfort zone.
Still grinding out the minimum wage sat in front of a PC and RUK is preferable to having a proper job
You have to dig a big hole for fifty quid
January 1, 2008 at 09:34 #132665Happy New Year all have a great 2008
Mines is to rest on my laurels and wait until Kauto Star runs in the Cold Cup and finish the season in front, come what may.
Not much fun in that as there’s a lot of good racing between now and then and even for me it’s too long to wait.
So chances of me sticking to it are about a zillion to one on.
January 1, 2008 at 10:02 #132667kind of the opposite to most here, mine will be to diversify and bet more, looking at all sports and markets as i aim to be doing more trading than i have to date. i’ll be playing bookie more i think and doing less accas and placepots will only be touched at the races for me, which i hope to be going to more than i did in 2007. keeping one’s eyes open if i can
whilst my new mantra is ‘never say never’ with regard to any betting medium i will be happy if i can avoid ever again finding a switched on computer when returning from the pub drunk – it’s taken awhile but i’ve finally realised that 8 pints of cider, a dozen jack daniels, 40 rothmans and god knows what else doesn’t turn me into either doyle brunson or pricewise
January 1, 2008 at 10:12 #132670My one resolution is to not bet on Boxing day. Every year I regret it as there are usually a lot of races ( weather permitting ) to potentially find the winner of but I am not in the right physical state and I am not in the right state of mind to concentrate etc. Every year I make mistakes and lose on Boxing day and I made another 3 figure loss with my betting on Boxing day in 2007.
This year I’m getting up and going straight out for a walk on Boxing day and ignoring the horses…..maybe I’ll go to the nearest pub.
Good luck to everybody with their resolutions.
January 1, 2008 at 10:27 #132672Boxing Day and Bank Holiday Mondays have always been disastrous for me.
The evidence in the form book doesn’t work out on these days for some reason.

January 1, 2008 at 12:06 #132684I had five out of six in the scoop6 on boxing day so I kinda like Boxing day.
New years resolution is to be more selective in the races that I choose and to forget about backing horses in maidens.
But most of all Im going to use the knowledge that I have gained from you guys on here to make 2008 a year to remember
January 1, 2008 at 12:52 #132690Great replies guys- interesting to see so many different approaches.
I found Alan’s post interesting because he obviously doesn’t set targets in money terms- I think that’s very wise in an up and down profession like betting. The fifty words idea is excellent- I found putting up my selections on the Lays and Plays (80 odd pts profit since July) very helpful as I’d often be writing up an explanation of a tip only to realise that there wasn’t one. I found posting in the public domain (OK the quiet backwater of the Lays and Plays is hardly the Racing Post, but it still increases the pressure) a very good discipline.January 1, 2008 at 13:38 #132693Upon the foundation of good patience and discipline that I built up in a break even year last year I want to learn more and develop a first class knowledge of formbook interpretation allied to my own computer analysis.
I will be sticking to what I’m best at, laying exposed and overrated handicappers both flat and jumps.
The most important thing I learnt last year – every horse is an individual, every race is unique.
