We should all write to Wm Hill HQ and tell them that if this turns out to be 100% accurate then we will never have a bet with their company again.

I thought you stopped Punting in 1990? Hardly going to miss your bets are they.

I am sure there must be more to this story!

According to person very close to me ( who is manager of a Coral shop), all the major bookmaking firms were forewarned that the GC were undertaking this procedure – and all managers of their shops were notified via letter.

However, where the problem arises, and unfairness of it all, if you like, is how do you determine ( apart from requesting id) the age of someone who to all intents and purposes look over eighteen ? They may, as some have, present you with false id. Then what?

Is the manager still culpable of "gross negligence", which is the term used in this case.

It’s not all black and white.

It’s a fair cop and they should check ages, like many pubs do and I’d say pubs have to check a lot more IDs than your average bookies with 5 men and a dog.

As for false IDs, I believe you can’t be held responsible for this as standard checks are satisfactory without cause to go further.

I wonder if he won in some of the shops, what did they do then?

As it happens, there’s a pub near us that does gigs every week and they wouldn’t let anyone on this forum or their parents in without photo ID, it’s their policy, they check everyone and scan them and they’re heaving – to say it’s too difficult is not true.

Unlucky for him and as has been said he could probably have took it further than he did.

It’s only right the GC or whoever do anything to prevent underage gambling particularly in bookies and on FOBTs.

Should the bookmakers then offer some sort of their own ID card for self protection? Anyone looking under a certain age could apply in advance to get a card.

Excellent idea UN, or they could accept DLs, Passports and those photo-IDs pubs issue or accept

Don’t online firms run some sort of checks anyway?

How many of us before we turned 18 had been into Betting Shops and placed bets and not been asked?

I expect a good percentage of us and did we say we were underage to the people behind the cash desk No.

So if anyone does admit to being underage in a bookies then they must be the stupdist people in the entire world.
