As for Simple Minds – a “game of two halves”. Brilliantly innovative and challenging up till 1982, then cynically went for stadium dominance and a big bank account.

Correct answer, five points – there’s very little of theirs that I can stand after Promised You a Miracle and New Gold Dream.

David Bowie went “cteatively AWOL” for precisely 10 years from 1982.

Mere mention of the words “Tin Machine” is enough to compel some grown men to rip their own heads off. Nothing of his from “Let’s Dance” onwards passed muster for me until 1993, when he gave us the “Black Tie White Noise” album and some contributions to the soundtrack of “Buddha of Suburbia” in rapid-fire succession – fine efforts, both.

He was good in Labyrinth, though.

I rate "The Heart’s Filthy Lesson" as up there with the best of his work – a darkly depressing piece that has the ability to leave the listener breathless.

It’s certainly one from a dark place. Now am I right in thinking Reznor had something to do with that track? Think I half-remember reading that he had.

wow im surprised no one has listed best festival!

Best Festival: V Festival 2007 – despite the weather, it was awesome! We went to the Stafford site, and by all reports the Chelmsford site was much worse than ours.

I would do the best artist/song/album etc but i like a mixture or everything, and i rarely buy albums – although i will say my best single would (surprisingly) be Snow Patrol/Chocolate

    My faves to date have been;

The Slampt Farewell Festival, Cumberland Arms, Newcastle 1999
feat. Red Monkey, Milky Wimpshake, Jazzfinger, Orrin de Forest, International Strike Force, HT Virgo, Brenda System, Avocado Baby, etc.

Tapestry Goes West, Margam Park, South Wales 2007
feat. Circulus, Seasick Steve, Piney Gir’s Country Roadshow, Threatmantics, The Research, Chrome Hoof, The Rubbishmen, etc.
(NB 2008 renewal cancelled last week. Arsington Sodmonster.)

All Tomorrow’s Parties, Camber Sands Holiday Camp, 2002
feat. Wire, The Breeders, Dead Moon, The Fall, Mission of Burma, Lonesome Organist, Nina Nastasia, Rachel’s, Low, Shellac, etc.

Hopefully both Latitude and Indietracks will vie for space in that top three in the next fortnight.

Actually, come to think of it Jez, All Tomorrow’s Parties at Camber Sands in 2001 would be a creditable second:

Boards of Canada, Calexico, Autechre, Lambchop, Tortoise, plus hot showers and chalets, and watching Red Marauder’s Grand National in disbelief on a crummy little B+W telly!
