Hi Billion….. the 7f and 2m5f thing is nothing special, just an idea for Formcast, it’s just the Flat and jumps equivalent to sprint races….. when I use the ratings that I favour, I noticed that the majority of winners at good prices were in these races….. nothing else mate, it worked for me and it MIGHT work on your lot…. on the other hand, you could fall flat on your botty….. but its worth keeping an eye on……

"then there’s the Betfair XGames, Oh boy, do I love them, not from the backing or laying side, but the trading opportunities are bloody awesome…."

What is this one about MrE?

    I love trading.

    Another question for you

    MrE

I guess I could have put it up on your new LUCKY DIP but kept it here as a Q & A.

I have been having a run of reasonable priced

    "placed"

horses and casting my mind back you once suggested 25% win and 75% place, stake spread.

I have taken a couple of prices today for horses to finish either 1st 2nd and 3rd, they are of course lower than outright win bets but better than what is available for place only.

Do you consider these bets to be good or bad value?

I can only say if I had made these bets over the past week or so I would have more loose change in my pocket than I have now.

 Cover Bets are returned stake and there was silly me thinking they would pay me 16/1 for my 2nd today

:D I would have got round to answering this today….. but I see you’ve found your own way….. I was going to ask you where you got these better than average place prices, I’d have had some of that…..

Hi Billion….. at last, I finally got round to this…. I know that you’ve already found the answer to this particular question, but I want to just edge you in the right direction about picking and choosing prices…..
The bookies are not bookies anymore, they’re accountants, so your not going to get any sense of fairness from them, if they don’t like you or your bet, it doesn’t matter what price they offer, YOU aint gonna get it…. they’ll cut the price for you or refuse to take a bet from you unless it less than £10….. so the best bet in your armoury is BOG….. and they will even refuse to take your bets at that if your too successful…. you personally are going to be OK because you admit that your only having fun bets, but for the young ‘uns that want to give a second income a go, then its hard work….. so you need something else as a safety net, something that will possibly cover losses made at the bookie….. I refer to the exchanges….. if you want to make money with a safety net, you need the bookies AND the exchanges….. take EVERY opportunity to take money from the bookie… BOG of course, and grabbing their bonuses… and there’s great lumps of cash you can make at that with absolutely NO RISK…..
But your major safeguard is from the exchanges in the form of the place bet…. but here again you need to grab some value….. I’m sorry to keep mentioning the "V" word, but if you dont use it, you will lose…. years ago, the standard place bet used to be 1/4 the odds a place and the "E/W thieves" took the bookies apart with this, so they all got together and decided to change the rules to 1/5th the odds except for big races…. so the obvious way to go was to try and make sure you got at least 1/4 the odds…. thats what I ask for on Betfair for a place bet….. I do not take what is offered, I know that I need 1/4 the odds to make a profit….. armed with that discipline, I know that I can quite safely bet 25/75% and make a profit…. I will bet place in a 5 runner race too, because I expect all my bets to WIN, if I didn’t I wouldn’t bet them, obviously they don’t all win (I wish I was that good)…. but those places keep saving my bacon……
Today’s bet was the same as yours…. Magroom…. I took it on Betfair at 4.00…. the place price required was 1.75, I rounded that down to 1.70 and it got matched quite early, so I had 1pt on it to win @ 4.00 and 3pts on @ 1.70….. had it have got stuffed but finished in the first 3, I was guaranteed a profit of 1.10 (less comm) so it was a winning bet even if it lost…..
There is a lot more to my betting than this because I don’t consider any bet that can’t return at least 3.00, but thats for future discussion….. mainly, I just wanted to point out why and how the 25/75% work out, I really just plan my staking to make sure that I win at least 1pt from every bet, even if it finishes third….. hope this explains my place betting a bit clearer…..
