The old ‘boat’ shows the young ‘uns the way home eh Fists?
Hardy Useless indeed.
November 16, 2008 at 19:31 #190078Very good run from Hardy Eustace, dug in really well there. Sizing Europe faded badly which is probably down to it being his first run since the Champion Hurdle last year.
Not sure what to say about Jered to be honest, i think Carberry should have got him closer and basically been up Sizing Europe’s backside when the latter went to challenge Hardy Eustace, as Sizing Europe took 5-6 lengths on him at that point.
November 16, 2008 at 20:21 #190087Cracking effort from a legend of a horse. One of the toughest and most consistent horses we’re ever likely to see. He’s a credit to Dessie Hughes, Conor O’Dwyer and of course the late Kieran Kelly.
A lot to like about Sizing Europe’s run. He’ll come on a great deal for that. Still think he’s the best hurdler around and he’ll be the one they’ll all have to beat come March.
Jered was probably a bit disappointing but I wouldn’t be giving up on him. He’ll win a few decent races before the season’s out. You won’t see the best of this horse until he gets his ground. If we have good ground at the festival he’ll be bang there, but I suppose that’s unlikely to happen.

Even so Jered hasn’t got one piece of form that would put him in the first three in any Champion hurdle. Don’t forget Henry De Bromhead said on ATR today that Sizing Europe hasn’t done any work which would equate to getting to the second last in a Grade 1 race and when you watch his run today it really confirms that he went four or five lengths clear and probably would’ve won 8 lengths or so but his legs were turning to jelly between the last two and Hardy outstayed him.
Jered will be better on better ground but he’s got to improve massively on todays run and with an official rating of 158 he’s going to have to improve a stone to win a Champion Hurdle with 2009’s version looking likely to be a stronger renewal than 2008’s. Today was the first time he’s met real Grade 1 horses and he was very disappointing being beaten by a 75% fit horse and an old man.

November 16, 2008 at 20:52 #190098You make a lot of relevant points re. Jered Ian but I just don’t think we should be putting a line through this horse yet. He has to improve a lot to get up there, as you point out, but today was really his first run out of novice company and therefore he is likely to improve as the season goes on. I’m not saying he’ll win a Champion Hurdle but if he was to get his ground come March I could see him running a big race at a decent price. Paul (assuming AP rides Binocular) would be able to cover him up in a bigger field and a strong pace will suit him.

Fair enough.
Do you think he’s the type that will battle up the Cheltenham hill? I have my doubts and think he may be more of an Aintree type.
November 16, 2008 at 21:08 #190102Jered was slightly disappointing. I too thought the jockey should have had him closer to the pace, but perhaps he thought he had more left in the tank than he actually did or perhaps he was feeling the ground.
Sizing Europe did, I agree, go out like a light, but as John Francome rightly opined; the horse did not benefit from hitting the front a fair bit out – especially as he is more suited to coming late off the pace.
But all the kudos must go to the old stager, Hardy Eustace, who yet again proved the doubters (including me) wrong. Well done old fella.

Gambling Only Pays When You're Winning
November 16, 2008 at 21:10 #190103He might not relish the hill like a Katchit or a Hardy Eustace but I don’t think he’s a complete bridle horse. I think a lot of us overreact when we see a Noel Meade horse winning on the bridle and we kind of assume that his horse wouldn’t find a lot if push comes to shove in future races. I suppose a lot of it is down to Paul’s style and his ability to fool people into thinking he’s got more horse under him than he actually does.
Reminds me a bit of Iktitaf this Jered. Remember a few years ago when he was all the rage earlier on in the season until the bubble burst at Leopardstown. He went to Cheltenham a forgotten horse but he was running a cracker in the Champion for Barry when he fell at the third last.
November 16, 2008 at 21:28 #190108Thats the 3rd time Jered has been beaten on Heavy ground! He wont run on it again, so i hope we get good ground for the Champion Hurdle!

November 16, 2008 at 21:30 #190110First of well done Hardy Eustace.
the writing is clearly on the wall here.
1. Sizing Europe blew up and no way would HE ever beat him if he was fit, I dibn’t think jhhe had to be 100% to beat Jered but blow me that old bugger done me.
2. Jered wouldn’t win the Champion Hurdle if he set of now.
I honestly don’t want to take a thing away from Hardy Eustace I even had in the cack of my mind he could win this.
Sizing Europe came there nad went past him in the same way as he did in the AIG and looked all over the winner. Simply the lay off caught up with him and HE being HE just doesn’t let go.
Great win great comeback roll on Cheltebnham. This race proved only one thing Jered is no where near CH class.
November 16, 2008 at 21:32 #190113If Harchibald or Hardy win tomorrow Fists you have unprecedented amounts of humble pie to swallow.

Jered is the epitomy of NH – looks outrageously short (to me) on all known current, but at the end of the season i may well read back thorugh the form and think he was outrageously long.
Jered is the epitomy of unexposed.

November 17, 2008 at 00:42 #190129I’m just talking from the emotional, didnt-have-any-money-on stand point when I say…..what an amazing run from Hardy Eustace! Such a gutsy horse to come back like that, he’s just a star. Fabulous stuff! Had a lump in my throat…..
I’ll shut up now.
