Almost brought tears to my eyes earlier today when I watched this absolutely marvellous horse on Youtube. A superstar waiting to happen before his sparkling career was cut short by injury. One of the few horses who had the distinction of beating Best Mate. He still holds the 2m 5f track record at Cheltenham which he smashed by four seconds in the Royal & SunAlliance Novices’ Hurdle.
As horses come and go, this is one rare soul who I can confidently say that he’d have been an all-time great if injury wouldn’t have struck.
December 1, 2014 at 20:55 #497120yes …he did it at cheltenham , I was there , max bet on , to be honest I was nervous as Norman did not look comfortable at any stage
fast going , shirt sleeve weather …horse wrecked , class got him through
Without any doubt a superstar waiting to happen
Memories
December 1, 2014 at 22:51 #497125I was there as well. My biggest ever bet(not quite JP McManus amounts.)
Monsignor reminded me of Barton who also romped home in the Sun Alliance only to be blighted by injury.
December 1, 2014 at 23:54 #497136He was a wonderful racehorse and proud to say I have actually met him at Newmarket when he came along with his charity HEROS in a ‘Meet the Racehorse’ feature.
He patiently stood for hours on end while people made a fuss of him and raised quite a lot of money for the charity as he came back for several years in a row.
Sadly he died last December age 19 but obviously left some wonderful and lasting memories what more could you ask. A gentle giant.
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...December 2, 2014 at 16:11 #497182Saw him in the same guise as Triptych at the now defunct Hereford racecourse one sunny Sunday afternoon. Unfortunately the constraints of this board prevent me from posting any photos I took that afternoon, but he really was a magnificent beast.
Mark Pitman unfortunately the subject of much anger in various quarters for not getting him back on the racecourse after his injury.
