Knowledgeable indeed. Mr Cattermole is a very good all-rounder, as well as being easy on the eye and ear.
Competence is not to be sneezed at. There was an embarrassing moment on RUK (Epsom, Thursday evening) when guest pundit James Willoughby was toying with Richie Persaud very much as a cat might play with a mouse. He questioned him about Standard Times, and it soon became rather too obvious that poor young Richie didn’t have the foggiest about how such magical figures were arrived at. After half a minute of painful stumble-bluff about "averages over many years" and "all types of going", Mr Willoughby did the kind thing, let him off the hook and explained it all.
Horrible to watch such suffering…
July 31, 2011 at 00:05 #366626I can’t help thinking about "ironing underpants", when I see Mike. My wife assures me it makes them easier to stow away in the drawer.
And the comment someone made about his bravery in wearing a pink shirt north of Watford. Up in York, it were.

There are many thousands that could toy with Rishi Persad (probably, even Mike Cattermole), but when was that ever a measure of competence?July 31, 2011 at 08:28 #366639

There are many thousands that could toy with Rishi Persad (probably, even Mike Cattermole), but when was that ever a measure of competence? My object was not to prove Mr Willoughby’s competence, but to highlight the failings of his interlocutor. Rishi Persad (on this occasion) highlighted the relative competence of other broadcasters – just as I highlighted the relative competence of other posters, such as yourself, by spelling his name incorrectly.
We’ve all been there…
July 31, 2011 at 08:42 #366641I wonder if there is not a bit of sub-concious jealousy going on here.
Cat is too good-looking, and how many of us would like to be on the arm of Emma? And some of us might like his job.
Value Is EverythingJuly 31, 2011 at 08:51 #366642I like Mike and Emma (at least they make me smile) and would much rather have them than the Clare Balding/Willie Carson combo.
July 31, 2011 at 08:57 #366644Whenever Hayley Turner wins a race it is always Mike Cattermole that does the interviewing…wonder why

I have a feeling "Mrs Spencer" may have buried the hatchet with the head Turner, as she interview her following a win the other day.

Each to his own but I would rather listen to Persad’s ‘incompetence’ than someone continually trying to prove how clever they are.
As for Catt ‘goodness me’ he really is tv’s ‘Mr Bland’.

Why?
July 31, 2011 at 18:27 #366704Persad is ghastly, can’t watch the man. Cattermole is terrific, adds to the enjoyment, great pro.

Why?
Possibly because most know Rishi is incompetent, whereas JW exudes his faux air of authority while holding little understanding of the basic nuts and bolts?
Watching the replay of the Steward’s Cup earlier, his way over the top eulogising of Hoof It (listen here http://horses.sportinglife.com/Video/Racing/) is cringeworthy – considering how much the horse had in his favour – and his notion that the performance would have won half the gp1 sprints for the past 5/6 years entirely laughable.
He may be plausible, even intellectual, but lacks the common sense appreciation of the fundamentals that separates the actually successful from the theorists, and it shows.July 31, 2011 at 20:25 #366711

Oh,
Reet
, really! How lame of you to trot out the old saw about an "intellectual" who lets himself down by lacking "common sense". Or the "theorist" who is really not "actually successful". This evergreen rot is touted by the marketing intelligentsia to soothe the ignorant masses, in order to bolster their sense of self-worth and make them more easily fleeced, but it seems to sucker-in a lot of people who really ought to know better!
In my experience "intellectuals" have almost invariably avoided the "absent-minded professor" cliché, and invariably have a lot more practical sense than the twerps who criticise them for not having it (present company excepted, of course!)
At least get your facts straight. You aren’t even fair to Poor Willow on the
Hoof It
front – he tempered his initial "wow factor" enthusiasm pretty quickly when he saw the surprisingly slow time and pace for the race. This shows an honesty, a willingness to alter his opinion in the light of the evidence, which does him credit.
What would you have? Someone who offers you the perfect analysis of a race which you can unthinkingly swallow? Someone who’s been jammy enough to make a fortune at betting, and whose luck might rub off? Or a Willoughby, who enjoys taking individual positions and floats stimulating ideas for us to debate, with which we may agree or disagree as we wish?
I for one have never heard the man say "I’m right about this". He is always careful to offer us caveats ("in my opinion, and on the data we have available…") which do his honesty credit. He’s great at seeing more than one side to any given question. If you are merely cowed by his confidence, then I can’t help you.
July 31, 2011 at 21:15 #366722It’s funny how other racing fans notice things that could escape the "general public" watching the show.
I too thought Cat and Emma seemed like they wanted to get into each others pants – which is a nice thing really, too much war and violence etc – pant sniffing is fun!
Aaaaaaanyways, it could get irritating if they don’t just book a room the night before the show and get it over with.
I didn’t realise that they may already be noshing each other, as a previous poster mentioned.
I wasn’t even aware Emma had split from Jamie after he boshed Hayley in the weighing room toilet.
Better than Emmerdale this.

I don’t think the presenters are that bad but you need more who respond on a punter-in-the-street level. Too much goes on without any real comment.
I would like to see someone on there who takes a ‘shock jock’ approach, perhaps like pundits on football radio. Gary Wiltshire or someone like that might be good if they were allowed to be a bit dangerous.
This is going too far for you lot but would make wonderful TV: a Matt Chapman style pundit in heavy-hitting betting shops getting punter reaction. The sport would be get vigorous feedback from the people who finance it.July 31, 2011 at 22:44 #366738

I offer facts and evidence, you come back wih spin and innuendo – is that what intellectuals do?
JW made some very strong statements about the Steward’s Cup form, all made with due deliberation and semi-convincing gravitas; that he chose to retract them later – on just the evidence of the clock – speaks volumes for his actual grasp of the situation in the first place.
You carry on with your worship, I’ll continue being cowed, eh?

I offer facts and evidence,"Facts and evidence" Reet, that you’re very good at twisting to suit your own story.

Hoof It is a big brute of a horse. With the physical scope to continue progressing. I have little doubt Hoof It is capable of winning in minor pattern company and possibly (with a little more improvement) holding his own at Group 1 level.

Spin, twist, are the two the same?

Back to Mike and Emma, well Mike really. Thoroughly enjoyed it when Sir Hencry dressed him down when talking about Frankel.
Mike asked about where Frankel would run next, Henry told him and explained in detail how many more runs the horse will have this season. Mike then asked Sir Henry how many more runs the horse will have this season to which Henry replied, "I’ve already told you that, weren’t you listening?"
