Call The Midwife is a brilliantly produced series Andre and is set around the 50’s and 60′ It all centres around a convent in a small community close to London Docks where Nuns and midwives struggle with the technology of the time to carry out their job.
Each week they look closely at the problems which were being faced in that particular year whilst revolving it around a different family expecting a child each week. Sundays episode was one of the strongest for a long time and before they touched on the Thalidomide scandal and how it devastated the lives of so many children and their families.
It’s one if the best produced programmes on thr BBC a dramatised pocket history lesson in each episode.I know what you mean about the Godolphin password Andre. I saved mine but it takes at least 3 goes to get in.
Best of luck for Friday..
Jsc xThings turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...January 4, 2023 at 20:35 #1629652I got thrown out of our dog walking group because a new member joined and he had two Facebook identities (creepy and worrying) and obviously idolised Enoch Powell. I confronted him with it, had a ( unusual for me) an internet tiff about it and I was the one thrown out of the group. Is the really old midwife still in the series? She must surely be about 150 by now. I don’t know why I stopped watching it a few years ago. It’s sad that the woman who wrote the original book died without realising how successful the series was to become.
January 5, 2023 at 00:24 #1629665You had every right to confront him Moe an obvious trouble maker and person of bad taste but full marks for standing up to him.
I think you mean Sister Monica Joan Moe. She is still in it, now retired and cared fot by the other nuns.
Jennifer Worth wrote the books but died in 2011 just before the series first episode in January 2012.
If you watched Sunday’s episode the first in a new series I think you would get back into it very quickly.
JacThings turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...January 5, 2023 at 02:33 #1629671Wow Moe, he sounds a complete ass, and as for supporting Enoch Powell
he’s one step away from Supporting the “black shirts”. I can’t believe
thy threw you out of the dog walking group. To be honest Moe, you sound
well rid of them. I’ve known people, thankfully normally decent, probably
I keep my friends in a relatively small group, but I’ve also had to deal
with some of the scum of the earth (probably why I trust a small group)
lower than you can imagine. So let me be clear, you are very much one of
the good guys, if your dog walking “friends” don’t want you there, but
have a twisted racist instead, don’t you give it another thought, your
dog is better than the bunch of them and I’ve no doubt loves you regardless.Thankfully I’m now well away from that dark element, although I can still
smell them at 20 paces. He’ll show his hand in time and they will realise
they have a bad un. Don’t let it get under your skin, or in your head. You
know you did the right thing, I would have done the same. So take care of
yourself, your dog, your family and your TRUE friends. The rest can go and
feck offJanuary 5, 2023 at 08:22 #1629679Hello all,
Some amazing results at Newcastle yesterday.
Two consecutive triple figure winners there.
One linked to a line of form which gave me a winner the week before Southwold and Glam puss ran third and first. Prior to that Southwold beat Endofastorm. I didn’t pick up on that yesterday and actually did the fourth horse home yesterday each way at decent odds.
Even more interesting was the ride on KRAKEN POWER later in in the meeting. If you get a chance to watch it, it is on at the races.
If ever a horse was forced not to win, that appeared to happen yesterday.
Somehow this horse has only won once. I would rate it in the very high 80s.
The jockey was caught bang to rights race fixing in India a few years back and not disciplined by the authorities here.( Full transcript leaked of a phonecall).
Everything that is wrong about racing is evident in that ride. So I’d advise watch that horse next time out. The horse was desperate to go through with an effort but restrained. Who knows when it’ll be let down!!!
Incidently the only horse he has ever beat Abduction,( when with a different trainer) is now in the same yard and has a higher rating.January 5, 2023 at 08:37 #1629681It was a shocking ride Sam..
“An enquiry was held into the running and riding of KRAKEN POWER (IRE), ridden by Paul Mulrennan and trained by Jim Goldie, which raced just behind the leaders but appearing to lose its position and dropping back to last place before running on to finish a staying on fifth, under a hands and heels ride. The rider and the trainer were interviewed and shown recordings of the race. The rider stated having travelled well through the race he found himself stuck behind horses with no room to manoeuvre, having to take off heels for a sustained period, losing both momentum and ground and finding himself further back than he wanted. The trainer confirmed the instructions that he wanted Mulrennan to get a lead, to get the gelding settled and to give the gelding cover due to the strong head winds present today. Their explanations were noted.”
Moehat,
they have lost a wonderful, kind and caring person in their dog group.
they will realise that, probably very soonBlackbeard to conquer the World
January 5, 2023 at 08:55 #1629682The “wind” is the mitigating factor here and gives them a get out of jail card.
A stewards enquiry with any backbone would give out a 42 day ban for non trying to the unfortunate horse and similar break to the jockey and 6k fine to the trainer. Harsh but fair.
The happy outcome (for punters at least) is that he will go off a short priced favourite on his next run and will most likely win, now that his last run is in the ‘ public’ eye. 👁️.January 5, 2023 at 10:11 #1629689OMG Sam I just watched Kraken Power’s race. He was going well and well placed to challenge for the lead when quickky dropped back to last position and only then was the horse shaken up making ground but too late to have any impression on the leaders.
Mulrenhan rode him hands and heels all the way and didnt use the whip once…what’s the wind got to do with it the horse was ready to go when asked but he was never once encouraged to do so.Thanks for highlighting that Sam. Jac
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...January 5, 2023 at 11:31 #1629696Absolute shocker by Mulrenhan Sam. Plenty of opportunity to take a better position,
I’m not sure how he got away with that one. He’s entered again at Southwell on Tuesday,
Whether or not he takes his place is anyones guess.,
January 5, 2023 at 13:16 #1629703After all your talk about Karaken Power I went and found the replay of the race. Appalling, terrible… I agree Sam – if the stewards had any cojones they would have dished out some severe punishments. Using the wind as an excuse for letting them get away with “fixing the race” is just a load of rubbish.
January 5, 2023 at 13:31 #1629706Bonus Race Alert for Godolphin Comp!! (Probably the only one of the competition lol)
Dubai Racing Club Classic (Handicap) (Turf) I think it’s at 14:35….
Get your picks in before you forget!
PS – There appear to be six Godolphin runners in the race but only FIVE of them are listed for the Bonus Race – Did they just forget to list one of them – or can they only have five horses in the bonus race selections? Either way it’s pretty poor (major understatement) and sadly typical of how much they care for this comp. Even more so when the missing horse has a good chance of making the frame (at least). Rant Over!!
January 5, 2023 at 14:08 #1629715Thanks Andre for the heads up.
I’m all over the place this week. Taking down the decorations at the moment.I have a team ready to go so must get them in soon and the Bonus alert will make me do that…

JacThings turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...January 5, 2023 at 14:43 #1629722Happy New Year all. I hope everyone had a bearable Christmas and is keeping well (or recovering). Just entered my stable in the competition. Curious about the omission of First Ruler isn’t it Andre, especially because, as you say, he has a decent chance? Will be all the more annoying if one of the others is a non-runner.
I was surprised to see Real World has been gelded. He wasn’t exactly a superstar but would have been a dual Group 1 winner last year if it wasn’t for Baaeed. His dam is out of a half sister to Dubai Destination and has also produced a Cheshire Oaks winner, as well as a decent hurdler in Leoncavallo so you’d think he’d at least have made a NH sire, though I suppose Godolphin isn’t really interested in those.
I didn’t see Call the Midwife over Christmas but used to watch it. I seem to recall an episode where Sister Monica Joan was diagnosed with dementia many years ago but now seems to have recovered!
January 5, 2023 at 14:56 #1629728Thanks for the heads up on the bonus round
Highbank wasn’t available to pick yesterday when I did my squad but is today, likewise First RulerTwo I like tomorrow are
15:10 Mubakker 7/2, seems to win every time off a break
15:45 Highbank 9/2, Showed promise last year, potential to kick on. Buick on the other horse thoughBlackbeard to conquer the World
January 5, 2023 at 15:00 #1629731That’s what I meant about Sister Monica Joan. And she was really old then! My mum had a terrible time in the fifties having miscarriages and stillborn babies so I think watching it makes me feel sad, especially as I never talked to her about it even when I had children of my own. We were saying on Facebook the other day how we love looking at archive footage of the past but how sad it makes us, too.
January 5, 2023 at 16:41 #1629761Indeed Moe. The appeal of going back in time (if it were possible) quickly fades when you think about childbirth or dentistry.
January 5, 2023 at 19:56 #1629788HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE
I have just put my stable on for what it is worth.
Are we just keeping tabs on here or is there some secret league I know nuthin about?I see my friend Shelir is running tomorrow in a Group 2
