This my 1st post.
Botchy1 you may like to try https://www.racing.com/news/2015-07-08/melbourne-cup-qualification-explained.
An interesting stat that maybe of interest to some of you guys is the following list of starters from various countries-
GB 9 GER 2 IRE 6 USA 1 JAP 1 FRA 1 NZ 3 AUS 1.
Sad from my point of view but the VRC wanted overseas representation and they certainly have it in spades.
Leviathan owners Godolphin (5) and Local L. Williams (4) have 9 between them.My bet will be Big Orange and a saver on Our Ivanhowe.
October 31, 2016 at 11:39 #1269719after pausing to remember Red Cadeaux, I looked for a decent-price punt in the place-only market to be in the first three.
ideal candidate would have placed in G1 at the 3200m, but anyone that did would not be double-figures to place, so ended up with Who Shot The Barman, currently 12/1 to place, having been placed 3 from 6 at the distance and 3 from 5 at the track, albeit no higher recently than in Group 2.
HKJC guide says: “Struck interference in the straight when 4 lengths 11th to Prince Of Penzance in this race last year and finished third behind Protectionist in 2014. Showed something of return to form when 0.75 lengths 2nd to stablemate Grand Marshal in G2 Moonee Valley Gold Cup (2500m) on 22 October.”
also like two of the lesser-fancied Godolphins to place – Qewy (Appleby) and Secret Number (Suroor) – but neither has placed recently above Group 3.
the Tony Martin raider Heartbreak City is fascinating. to be ridden by HK champ Joao Moreira. easy and strong winner of the Ebor and some hurdle races, but had previously weakened in the Chester Cup. no Group form. RP indicates as of two days ago an ownership change in this gelding from Here For The Craic Partnership to A Shiels, Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock P/L et al. anyone know if that just happened, or was always part of the plan ?

A part share of the horse was sold a couple of weeks after the Ebor, the original partners are still involved with the horse. They are quite an enthusiastic bunch and god knows what will happen if HC win.
The owners have backed HC at all rates from 150’s + Ante post.
October 31, 2016 at 12:43 #1269722Hartnell for me hardly original I know but is proven at the highest level, has track , trip and going in his favour and a reasonable draw (12) 5/1 only a fair price but with skybet paying 6 places it becomes an ew proposition. Good luck all.
October 31, 2016 at 13:44 #1269733thanks botchy1 – i should have remembered your post on page 1 !
October 31, 2016 at 18:38 #1269823I have gone from one extreme to another here!! I have backed three horses drawn one three and eighteen!!
JAMEKA 13/2 Could be the class act of this and if she gets the trip will go very close!!
BEAUTIFUL ROMANCE 66/1 who has ran behind some very very good horses and once again if it gets the trip will run well
CURREN MITOTIC 28/1 who has only won one race in its life but has finished second in a Japanese Group One over two miles!!
Good Luck Guys!!
And get the match sticks ready to keep your eyes open!!
October 31, 2016 at 20:00 #1269861Yes, just been looking for a second horse to put a lucky fiver E/W on.
Agree with Raymo here with BEAUTIFUL ROMANCE 66’s 6 places.
Quite lightly raced this year, last time out beaten under 3 lengths by Journey giving 2 lbs. The step up in trip could bring a bit of improvement as well. Worth a shot for me at that price.
G’day all
October 31, 2016 at 20:03 #1269862The Japanese horse has, unlike a lot of horses in the field, been used to running in races with lots of runners, and it’s win was in a 14 runner race.
October 31, 2016 at 22:39 #1269869Keeping my fingers crossed for Big Orange. Hopefully, he might be able to draw the sing out of those waiting for the usual late burn up. He is a popular horse and the one bookmakers will not want to see in the places.
October 31, 2016 at 22:53 #1269871Liking the 6 places with Skybet. Don’t seem to have slashed the prices relative to rivals to compensate either looking at oddschecker. Had a small each way on Who Shot Thebarman at 40s. Has form in the race which I like. 9/2 on my money if he comes top 6 so worth a shot. Good luck all.
November 1, 2016 at 03:39 #1269883Not long to the off, and from the users online mentioned it looks like it’s just
you and me Moe that are still up at this ungodly hourBest of luck with your 3
November 1, 2016 at 03:49 #1269884Heartbreak city and bondi beach resort for me. The ground is perfect for bondi beach and after last year’s trial run the horse has been laid out for it. Heartbreak city has the speed for the race and both could be there at the death. Luck in running plays a big part. Would love to see big orange win but don’t think he will be quick enough at the finish.
November 1, 2016 at 03:54 #1269885Good luck mickey, I see from the online list that you and follyhoog have joined us on the
nightshift.November 1, 2016 at 04:16 #1269886So close for Tony martin. Great run by big orange but didn’t have the speed in the end. Bondi beach got too far back.
November 1, 2016 at 04:19 #1269888Gutted, great run from that draw.
Night all.
November 1, 2016 at 04:24 #1269889Well done Joliff, he ran a great race from not the best of draws, you could have
had the forecast too, terrific stuff. Bad luck botchy and mickey, that was so
close.Oh well, always next year for us Moe, we might not have picked the right horse,
but we did have the right trainer…..don’t know if that’s much compensation
Ah well, there’s always next year. I’m off to bed, not looking forward to that
alarm going off at 8.30November 1, 2016 at 04:34 #1269890C’mon BigG; you know me…backed half the field in the end! All of the first 5 had finished first or second in big fields [Hartnell the only one to finish second].And, yet again the winner needed to have ran in the past 28 days. Draw doesn’t seem to be that important although not sure how it compromised Heartbreak Cities chance.note to self; wait till raceday next year for first 5 places.
