Sorry if already a thread. Pleased and disappointed, got £10 ew on Bauer at 50/1 , and said would get more on, now the price has crashed since his very good third Tuesday! Now 20/1 amid rumours a certain K Fallon will ride, providing he gets in of course!

Melbourne Cup odds comparison – Maluckyday still favourite

With six months today until the Melbourne Cup, Andrew Hawkins has looked at the state of prepost betting for the race.

Although entries are not taken until the start of September, pushed back from the traditional August close of nominations, three of Australia’s largest betting organisations have opened markets on Australia’s biggest race.

Betstar was the first to open, two weeks after the last Melbourne Cup, while Sportingbet opened in early January.

Betfair has since opened trading on the race that stops the nation.

At this stage, there are 373 horses across all three markets – some in all three, some in only two and some in one market.

The consistent favourite has been last year’s Melbourne Cup runner up Maluckyday, and despite two disappointing runs in the autumn, he heads all three markets.

Others who have shortened with Betstar in recent months are BMW winner Cedarberg (81 to 41), Australian Derby winner Shamrocker (41 to 21) and Australian Cup winner Shocking (26 to 21).

Some of the biggest moves have been on the Mike Moroney-trained Absolutelyawesome (151 to 34) and the Lloyd Williams-owned Muir (201 to 67).

Last year’s Melbourne Cup winner Americain has failed to flatter in two runs this year but he has still shortened from 26 to 21.

    Here is the market comparison:

The 151st Melbourne Cup will be run on November 1.

I’d love to see Fame and Glory in Melbourne, any possibility? Ditto St Nicholas Abbey – and would love to see Whispering Gallery here for Godolphin!

Assuming Sahara Sun drops out as expected after his disappointing run, Bauer needs at least 4 more withdrawals (some horses may jump ahead of him in the next few days).

There are many Australian punters hoping Bauer gets into the "Cup" as he would be a great each way chance, his Geelong Cup run was excellent flying home late from back in the field.

Have backed "At First Sight" to win the race, was 21’s out 31’s (which I grabbed) now into 15-1 after coming from the tail of the field to run 2nd to Tanby in the Bendigo Cup 2400m.

Thoughts on "Moyenne Corniche" sitting around the edge of the field ?? Will be running on Saturday @ Flemington 2500 metres. The winner of this race is exempt from the ballot.

    Cheers
    ZB

If Bauer gets in, think he is good for a place at the very least.

I believe Jukebox Jury’s part-owner (also of Americaine)considers he has a good chance, though among the lesser lights I had previously preferred Johnson’s other one. JJ was very fast as a youngster.

But I’ll still be doing a small reverse forecast on Americaine and Lucas Cranach, hoping that

    for once

the bookies’ favourite saying, "The bigger the field, the bigger the certainty" proves true.

Didn’t JJ go off favourite for The Racing Post Trophy many moons ago?

Good draw for Lucas Cranach and Dunaden. Anyone else burning the Midnight oil on Monday night?

Bauer goes in as first reserve, take it from where he was.

Probably going to back the Ellison pair and the Godolphin pair EW.

Bauer ran a better prep than the winner Dunaden in the Geelong and proven class so that’s a shame, I would’ve had him as second favorite.
Jukebox Jury will be up there and should be a big chance, still a great race

Listened to the trainer interviews last night, and, even though they haven’t got good draws my heart wants the Ellison horses to do well. Cumani said the draw had done for Manighar. Of the horses with a good draw Drunken Sailor is the one with a massive price so I’ll probably risk a small ew on that one [having said months ago when watching him on the telly..Melbourne Cup for that one; would kick myself if I didn’t back him at 33/1].Niwar [sp] loves the track; trainer said Mourayan was the forgotten horse, but he doesn’t seem to like the track. Love listening to the trainers talking; they speak in a much more technical way about racing on Australian radio; even Mr Ellison was talking about horses ‘backing up’ etc; none of which I understood. At First Sight [Glance?]ran a very good trial, I believe. Even though a French horse/jockey won last year I’d rather back a horse with a local lad on board.Trainer very bullish about the Godolphin horses this year. It’s interesting as well that the horses are vetted in the days prior to the race so there can be no last minute scratchings preventing another horse from running. Much as I love the National, I’m beginning to wish that the ‘race that stops a nation’ in this country was a flat race such as this one. Will the Quantas strike stop any jockeys for getting over there..? Sorry to rabbit on but I love this race!

You are not rabbiting on Moehat,it is good to get feedback from there, just make sure you have a saver on Americain! He grows another leg here, the draw is awkward but i will stake my reputation(of a reasonable tipster that he wins,he is a class above them and his last win was the best lead up i have seen) just needs a normal first class ride from Mosse!

I backed Americain last year, so it was pretty exciting listening to the race in the early hours! Hasn’t got a terribly bad draw, has he..still in the middle somewhere? However, I only have tiny bets so I need a bit of value.
