Really like Wild Irish Rose for this race today. Backed her last time and was given an amazing ride by Heffernan and no surprise to see him keep the ride. The secret to running this horse was discovered by Anna who rode her the time before, and she told her father that the horse stops running when hit with the whip.

Hopefully Heffernan keeps to that today as he nearly messed it up the last time in the final furlong. Certainly could be capable of better, but if you have a weak heart you better pass on backing her.

The last race she was backed from 15/2 to 7/4 so any money for her could give a guide to her acting on the ground.

I was looking for a 3yo in this race given the incredible trend angle – 3yos v older horses over 1m 6f+ at Goodwood have an astonishingly good record.

Wild Irish Rose was tempting but I also have a thing about avoiding quirky or poorly-balanced horses at this track, so I had to pass her over. I also looked at Aljezeera, but the pedigree doesn’t exactly scream 1m 6f and Luca Cumani is a trainer on a downward spiral.

In the end I sided with Melodic Motion, for whom all the stars seem to be aligning. She is related to yesterday’s winner Here Comes When, progressing through handicaps and is almost a carbon copy of the same owner’s Simple Verse, who won this race two years ago after graduating through handicaps.

Endless Time for me,11/4 is not great price but I think she is the most likely winner.

If you go to back a certainty always buy a return ticket.

This is the Lillie Langtry isn’t it?

I’ve backed Dubka and Natural Scenery both at 8s. Dubka looks most capable of handling conditions and this distance has long looked within her compass. Natural Scenery won her maiden on good-soft at Newmarket last year and there’s every chance she could just outstay them when it turns attractional.

I had late each way bets on those two too Charles. Thought we had it for a moment. Just beaten for first and just beaten for the third. Well done to Endless Time backers, would’ve been an unlucky loser had she not got there – value for more than winning distance.

Really good filly that Endless Time – some effort to give weight to Melodic Motion and beat Dubka on that ground. Another feather in the cap of Charlie Appleby, who must be having his best season yet for the Godolphin boys.
