That was an absolute disgrace. Geraghty deserves a ban as do all over the others in that race except the winner. None of them tried to obtain the best possible result. Tony Martin, JP McManus horse, ridden by Geraghty. Cant get much more dodgy than that.
April 3, 2016 at 15:09 #1240763That was where my £1.64 went!
I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains
I've walked and I crawled on six crooked highwaysApril 3, 2016 at 15:52 #1240766Jeeez just seen the news.
Barry hit with a 30day ban. horse banned for 60days. 3k fine for Martin. Need to get a replay of this.
April 3, 2016 at 15:56 #1240768Proper order. All jockeys however should get the same punishment as should all horses and trainers. From a sporting point of view it is incumbent on all participants to do so fairly.
I think the stewards at limerick got the punishment for Geraghty and Martin spot on, all i would say is they should apply the same punishment to all other runners in the race.
April 3, 2016 at 16:45 #1240772It couldn’t have happened to a better guy. Fully deserved!!!!!
However, the race was by far the fastest run on the card. So maybe the winner is really that good, but still the non-trying performance deserves the full 30 days.

They could hardly penalise the others for not gaining the best possible placing as they were all going backwards at the finish. It was reminiscent of the race at Market Rasen the other week when the conditional got a 10 day ban but it’s hard to know how a jockey as experienced as Geraghty could get it so badly wrong.
April 3, 2016 at 17:22 #1240779It seemed an odd race throughout. I’m not sure I would have singled out Geraghty for punishment at the time but yeats makes a good point and presumably the jockey interviews helped the stewards reach their decision.
I note it’s not the first time Velocity Boy has won a race in this fashion, one might think that’s something to be aware of when deciding if it’s safe to let a horse have such a big lead.

I understand your point but my argument is that at the start of the race the best possible placing any horse in that race could have got was 1st place but by gifting the big lead and making no effort to try reduce it, ALL jockeys ensured that they could not achieve the best possible placing of 1st. There behaviour meant they were all playing for second place which is not the best possible placing. The fact that some finished off the race more strongly than others is not the issue in my mind as the race was lost on the first circuit.
April 3, 2016 at 22:30 #1240801Just a crap ride from Barry G, one of those things, nothing deliberate I don’t think, probably took it for granted the leader would come back to the field as like what Ruby said the time was quick enough and when he didn’t come back to them and Geraghty started to try and make progress his mount didn’t respond as he would have liked. Not sure it was worth 30 days.

Lads was the time really that quick? There were only two hurdles races over that distance today in limerick. Race 1 and race 2. Race two was won in a time 5 seconds faster than race one.
Winner race 1:Hard to call 4:27 sec
Winner race 2:Velocity boy 4:22 secThe winner of race one doesn’t have a rating but beat a 107 rated horse by 11 lengths eased down so I would say that horse is 15 pounds better than the 107 horse so estimated rating of the race 1 winner is 122. The rating of the winner of race two is 130. So the race two winner by virtue of ability alone should be able to run that course in a quicker time. Also the winner of race one recorded their time carrying 11st 12, whereas the winner of race two was only carrying 11st 1.
So in summary the horse who won race 2 ran the course quicker by 5 seconds but is a better rated horse and was carrying less weight than the horse who won race one over the same course and distance. So I don’t believe the argument that it was a particularly fast run race.April 3, 2016 at 23:05 #1240809I just went by what Ruby said about the quick time. If the time wasn’t quick then Barry hasn’t done a good job with his fractions and clock in his head. I wonder how many jockeys actually mentally count the fractions in their head or do they go by instinct and experience? It was a poorly judged ride but jockeys make mistakes from time to time. I think the best horse on the day won going by the way the runner up made little impression when Barry started to try and make inroads.

April 3, 2016 at 23:24 #1240811Well he did cut the gap from over 30 lengths at one point to only 11 lengths at the finish, despite the fact that Geraghty only decided to ask the horse for an effort after he jumped the second last. He was cruising on the bridle all the way until after the second last while looking at the winner coasting home yet doing nothing about it.
April 3, 2016 at 23:36 #1240814Terrific decision.
Hopefully, the Appeal will fall flat on its face. If Barry wanted to appeal perhaps he should have done so to the dinosaur that is his paymaster. A man who has never wanted to understand the concept of an easy lead.

He’s been given a 30 day ban. In your opening post you said he should get a ban, he has. Do you think the ban is too light?
The horse didn’t close enough and Barry probably realised the goose was cooked and wasn’t going to catch the winner. He made a mistake along with the other jockeys.
If they put him in jail for it, some punters would say he needs his head cut off.
There are mistakes made in all sports or are you saying this was deliberate?Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
April 4, 2016 at 11:18 #1240834I agree with the ban. I’m surprised it was 30 days but with Geraghty and those particular connections this sort of thing goes on regularly so while I was surprised with 30 days I have no sympathy for any of them. The only downside I can see is that this sets a precedent where a young jockey or just a bad jockey makes a genuine and innocent cock up like this and will get 30 days, but id prefer the bans for such consistent cheating to be on the harsh side, and these connections are by far the worst combination for this behaviour.
April 4, 2016 at 11:18 #1240835A 30 day ban is hardly putting someone in jail.
It is for the authorities to decide whether an action is deliberate or not. Clearly if there had been proof of deliberate cheating the ban would have been much more severe and rightly so.
Unfortunately, making insufficient effort or deliberately cheating produce the same result as far as punters are concerned.
Sadly, I might be being a little overly optimistic but I very much hope the ban sticks and the Stewards use the judgement as a line in the sand in respect of the running and riding of JP horses.
Perhaps the media could also open their eyes occasionally?
April 4, 2016 at 14:50 #1240849It’s good to see that hardly any posters think the ban was unjust. It’s exactly what the cheaters deserve and it’s refreshing to see stewards standing up to the likes of Geraghty, McManus and Martin.
The problem is consistency. The usual apathy and permissiveness makes almost makes this seem unlucky or unfair on those who got punished. These rides need to be punished heavily every single day of the year. In reality, similar non-triers (and worse) constantly pass without any sanctions.
As a side note, this is lazy training. The dark arts of non-trying and handicapping a horse can be accomplished without asking the jockey to do the dirty work.
