La Estrella has racked up 26 wins to equal the recently retired Stand Guard’s record. An amazing feat for a horse with documented leg problems. 3 wins for James given and the rest for Don Cantillon.
I don’t know much about the trainer but he has a high win to run rate in both codes and is worth following
It also highlights an unspoken "Gentleman’s Agreement" among the racing fraternity as a lot of the horse’s wins have come in sellers or claimers so at any point in the last 7 years someone could have put a claim/bid in on him.

Most potential bidders are on-message with that, but by no means all. I was present at Southwell for synthetics win number 23 this time last year, and some upstart pushed Don to 5,250gns to buy him back in at the subsequent auction – plenty of death stares aimed in the direction of the rival bidder by yer man that afternoon.

See also the well-known episode of about nine years ago, in which Hughie Morrison did briefly lose his stable pet, the veteran Kylkenny, after a bid in a plating race to his chagrin. No-one to blame but himself for that, mind.

You’re like an old stuck record.

26 wins is to be admired, whatever the level. Great for connections and racing fans alike. Good for him!

28 wins in his career yet amassed, if that’s the correct term, a measly 78 grand.

How bad is it that a horse that has won so many races cannot even cover half his training costs throughout his career.

Many of the races have been micky mouse uncompetive events with him long odds on.

It says a lot about racing in this country.

Think those who missed out on claiming him had a lucky escape, may as well put the money down a grid.

Oh, rest assured Don has plenty of other ways to make up the shortfall. To this day there are still Midlands bookies on gruel rations after two of Don’s racecourse debutants were smashed into (partly Don’s cash, partly others) before hosing up at Guilsborough Point-to-Point 21 months ago.

Flogging Grand Jesture to the non-TRF Alan Potts for 200,000euros off the back of a Punchestown bumper win will have paid for a few horse biscuits; ditto the aforementioned Guilsborough winners Classic Move to Donald McCain for 85,000euros and Inner Drive to Alan King for £60,000. He’d originally paid 20,000euros for Classic Move, and not even half that much for the other two.

Keeping La Estrella happy, fit and hoovering up unconsidered trifles is a personal indulgence that Don can easily afford.

Good stuff GC ..thats the dreams this game needs , well done that man ….however ,racing at southwell is very much dross , the lowest of the low ,,,the innards of roulette gambling , thats why the bookies love it

why anyone would want to glorify a nag who wins dross races against even more inferior opponents is beyond belief …but essentially thats whats happening on this thread

    I

ts bloody dross , pure and simple , no amount of romantic behind the scenes tales will change that

The lowest of the low , and typical of what British racing has become , thanks to all parties involved ….I may be the only one to scream that out loud …but by God I am going to continue

…If you watch it , or even still bet on it , you are simply complying with the enemy of everything that used to be good about our game

Each to their own. I’m easy to please, and while ATR continue to televise it, I shall continue to enjoy it from my sofa, with a cup of tea and a sticky bun, till I’m in my grave.
