I notice that Mr Strangeway has been rather conspicuous in terms of runners lately and wondered if anyone (Smithy?) knew much about him. I first noticed him when he claimed Coole Dodger for a whopping £15k from an execrable Sandown 3yo Claimer in August and notice that he has paid five figure sums to claim the likes of Bailieborough and Roman Villa from similar events recently. Has he never heard of the sales? He could have bought his entire string for a couple of grand at Ascot! I can only imagine that he’s suddenly come into a load of money and doesn’t mind how much he has to pay to buy a plater. My advice is that buying an eight year old who have raced eighty times exclusively on the flat with a view to run it in selling hurdles is a particularly poor business plan. It’s even dumber when you pay £11,000 for the privilege.

Doubtless he’s a lovely guy, but his purchases and their subsequent campaigns show that when it comes to racing matters, he clearly doesn’t know his stuff at all. He strikes me as either very gullible or a reckless dreamer, neither of which are crimes of course.

I have to agree that some of his purchases look dubious at best – Coole Dodger for £15k?!?!?!??!?!

I could buy three far nicer animals for that amount.

Well the horse has failed to meet more than 30k in two visits to the sales in the past couple of years. Now that he slowly on the downgrade and into his twilight racing years, I’d hate to think that Mr Strangeway paid anywhere near that much.

It’s hardly libellous to suggest an owner is paying over the odds for animals that don’t really merit it, and that he should possibly reconsider his purchasing strategy before cleaning himself out.

Were it libellous, I’m sure several of us on here would have given over our very last cent to Nick Shutts quite some time ago… 8)

    A message from Mr.Strangeway,

"I dont think my buys have been too bad.

Baileiborough to the exception , most of the other buys have been bought with the price tag in mind.

Coole Dodger’s last win at Windsor stands upto the highest scrutiny and on that form alone he is worth the 11k i paid for him.

Dunaskin was bought 3 days before the ebor privately, basically to have one with a chance in that race as he loves it bottomless and with heavy ground odds on worth buying

Roman Villa at 15k is a solid buy and no one can argue with it.

Film Festival at 4500 is a steal, given we backed it at 6’s before Rix tipped it at 3’s

Where do they think the money has been wasted?

Baileibough wasnt bought with any profit margin in mind, just was brought to force me into buying some colours and filling out my forms."

Big of Mr Strangeway to respond. For the record I have no problem with the buying of Film Festival which is why I didn’t cite him originally, but to take Roman Villa as an example, I believe the only positive for him is that his current mark will allow him to contest the top handicap hurdles for a while. I’d be surprised if he earns a penny in win prize money, so dubious is his finishing effort these days, while Dunaskin and Bailieborough will be very difficult to place effectively as age diminishes their ability. Coole Dodger was a truly awful buy, especially if he was purchased to go hurdling.

It is, of course, Mr Strangeway’s prerogative exactly how he spends his money and if he’s happy with what he’s doing, then I wish him all the best. I do maintain, for the little it is worth, that he would save a huge percentage of his outlay if he bought the horses he liked at the sales with the help of a reputable expert that through claiming races and private sales.
