Difference being he beat Cresta and Candleford in the Cumberland Lodge.

If this race was 1m 6f I’d be all over Hamish
He’s in my TOTE 10 to follow. Stamina is his strength so if they go a tempo he could run a big race
    agree his price is madness

I’m personally scratching my head when everyone is saying if Hukum gets his ground with soft in the description blah blah blah; why? To me he’s won a couple of races on soft/heavy that he was entitled to win. The Coronation Cup win was good, I grant everyone that but it was quicker than average, so there wasn’t much cut that day. He’s a good horse and may still win but If it’s soft, to me it’s not a given he’d be the happiest on it, in this class and at this price. Two at bigger prices to me would be Point Lonsdale and Westover, on the soft ground.

I don’t have Hukum down as ground dependant at all
They turned down a stone wall Royal Ascot win presumably to keep him fresh for this

Really interesting post IMO from WWL and it made me go back and check Hukum’s career.

He’s won nine times on Turf and of those nine only three were achieved with the word “Soft” in the going description.

And you could argue the best two runs of his life were his last two when he was only 1.2s and 1.92s respectively outside standard.

I was there at Sandown Park and while I didn’t walk the entire course the bits I did seemed genuinely Good to me.

But it was decidedly Soft when he won the Cumberland Lodge in 2021 and he was withdrawn due to Good to Firm ground at Royal Ascot so, unless his trainer has got his own horse completely wrong (possible – it’s been known), he’s best with cut.

But it is possible it’s been overplayed and it’s also possible Ascot won’t be that Soft anyway.

No rain the last 24 hours and only 2mm forecast the next 24 hours.

And only 70%, 50% and 60% probabilities Thursday, Friday and Saturday – 7mm to 15mm rainfall in total the forecast spread.

If it’s at the lower end, that’s barely enough to maintain it at Good to Soft and less than if they were watering.

Think you have used a spot on word there Ian, overplayed. I think he’s a very good horse, that likes good ground but has also won on soft.

According to the BBC weather forecast, heavy rain (90%) is anticipted from
6pm until 2am in the morning followed by light rain until 7.00am. Turftrax
have the straight course down as good with the the round course down as good
g/s in places. 8 hours of heavy rain has got to have an effect on the going.
Thursday was a fair share of light rain, Friday seems to have escaped it but
Saturday has rain forecast. I don’t think it’s likely that the course on
Saturday will be any better than soft g/s or depending how much rain gets into
the ground possibly some heavy. Don’t blame the messenger.

Second guessing the ground for Saturday, this evening, is ‘finger in the air’ stuff.
UK Meto is not forecasting anything more than light showers for Ascot, from tomorrow and on Friday it’s dry.
BBC weather uses Meteogroup these days and, again, a dry Friday and just light showers Saturday.

Prob best to wait til Saturday, if a fancy is ground dependant.

I am 30 minutes from Ascot, just across the Berkshire border in Hampshire and, contrary to the forecast, we’ve had a sunny dry day today, but it is raining this evening as I type.

And, it’s my understanding it’s also raining in Ascot, with 14mm forecast the next 24 hours.

Yep it’s more the damage that can be done tonight, if it is a deluge
as anticipated for 8 hours. The rest of the week, Friday aside, is just
topping up. I take your point Wilts, but the forecast for tonight, as
Ian has mentioned, appears to be right on time.

Yep agreed re tonight. That’s why my earlier post was specific about tom morn onwards:

“…..light showers for Ascot, from tomorrow and on Friday it’s dry….”

    Edit:
Should’ve added that a decent breeze is forecast for next 3 days, which should help any drying, esp on Friday.

KING OF STEEL is absolutely gorgeous. But as a progeny of STS I want HUKUM to win.

17mm rain overnight – Hukum must start favourite and do not underestimate Hamish.

Desert Crown is a complete “sicknote” and no one should ever back him ante-post for anything.
