I think Jango Baie will get up the hill in the Gold Cup. I think speed was more of a problem then endurance today. Still annoyed by Henderson going for het Arkle last year when I had a big ante post bet voor Brown Advisory Chase.

HDLG, I know you really don’t like the horse but Gaelic Warrior was marginally the best horse on the day and this is coming from someone who’s a huge fan of The Jukebox Man and had bet him antepost for this.
Townend didn’t make enough use of him imo and he also had to shorten stride into a couple of fences due to Il Est Francais in front. The Jukebox Man also got first run on him in a sprint finish.

The biggest reason is Townends mistake between the last and the line though. Gaelic Warrior was in front of The Jukebox Man at this point then Townend made a mistake which caused him to loss balance momentarily. This definitely cost him the race imo.

At exactly 00:05.59 in this replay you can see it clearly. He lost the race there and then.

GM the winner won , Gaelic didn’t , the winner on the day is the best horse , I’ve said before Gaelic has talent but he can also run like a drain , you can blame Townsend if you want but if you look closely at race you can find an excuse

Gaelic Warrior has run 4 solid runs in a row now… He’s matured now, in his prime.
The horse that run like a drain today was Fact to File also the Ryanair his only win in 7 😐

Ruby, I’m a fan of the horse but just can’t fancy him for the Gold Cup due to it being left handed. He has won that way around but I think he’s at his best going right and you need to be at your best to win a Gold Cup.
He won an Arkle on the old course but the new course has tighter bends. He never looked entirely comfortable at Aintree either and regularly jumped to his right.
He’s a disaster around Leopardstown and even got beat in a Fred Winter by a far inferior Brazil giving him 8lbs. Gaelic Warrior wouldn’t come off the bridle vs Brazil right handed.

The biggest negative will be if Townend isn’t onboard though imo. I think if Galopin wins the Hennessy again, he’ll ride him in March.

However, I’ll be the first man to congratulate you if he comes up the hill in front.

HDLG his only poor runs ever were left handed. Not his fault Wille keeps sending him that way around.

You’re not as quick to insult Fact To File who’s now ran like a drain in 2 of his last three outings.

My opinion is that he’s better left handed and should never run further than 2m5f again.

“Ruby, I think he was trying to look after the horse a bit also but it ended up costing him the race. You don’t do that in a King George.”

This. Fair play to TJM connections for getting the job done on the day, it was a huge run by GW because his last race must’ve taken something out of him just by the way Fact To File ran. I’m sure, as others have suggested, if he had had an easy race last time Townend would’ve taken it off IEF up the front and made it more of a test.

The Jukebox Man is a deserved winner of a phenomenal renewal but Townends mistake caused him to stop riding GW momentarily between the last and the line which ultimately cost him the race. He was in front before his whip got stuck.

It was a sensational performance coming from his exerts in the Durkan.

“For me the Gold Cup is between :

    Galopin Des Champs
    Jango Baie
    The Jukebox Man
    Iknowthewayurthinkin”

I expect Cromwell will have the latter cherry ripe on the day. ;-)

He ran poorly today , the other time he lost a shoe and still finished 3rd , Gaelic ran well today , just beaten by a better unexposed horse , FTF will go to the Ryanair , the winner and the Henderson horse likely to the GC , Gaelic Aintree , if Obrien has any sense Banbridge the Ryanair, it was a brilliant race , just don’t see why anyone can question the winner

CAS it’s all about March , however Jukebox now adds another equation , he jumps , has pace and looks likely to stay , that’s a tough nut to crack

Not in any way being critical of the jockey, but if he’d gone at the last fence like Bowen did on Bainbridge, he’d have won by even further.

The three pretty much jumped the final fence in unison, yet he was last away and still got up on the line. He was the least experienced chaser in the field and this was only his fourth run over fences.

You’re all splitting hairs here lads. There was less than a short head between the 3 of them at the line. It could have been a different result on any other day. There’s nothing between them and no blame should be apportioned to any horse or jockey.

It was an absolute pleasure to be there in person, every one around me, we were all saying it was an incredible race. An inch or less between me going home absolutely minted and paying for the trip down here, the hotel, the Xmas dinner, the spending money and all the presents.

That’s racing! Been an amazing day!

It was a great race to watch but it didnt necessarily feel like that high quality a race which feels strange to say. I doubt Banbridge has had to run any better than he did last year anyway which is still a good standard but not a gold cup winning one if the gold cup winner returns to form. Plus they all need to prove they want the trip that he relishs, they could improve for it too of course but its an unknown quantity.

I’d be quite down on Gaelic for Gold mainly because the longer trip means its more fences on a LH track which maybe he doesnt want.

Had Willy Mullins put just one of either Gaelic Warrior or Fact to File in the John Durkan, then today’s race might have seen a different outcome. Looking back, they had no reason to be beating the living kapok out of each other. The nearest to either was 30 lengths behind. None of the other horses had races as demanding prior to today. Will that be a lesson for the future, I wonder? It was a great and unforgettable spectacle at Punchestown, but which is the greater prize?
