Well done, TTC. I thought Tornado Flyer should have been at around 100/1. Anyway, why was Saint Calvados powering clear with 3f to go? The ground was quite testing today and though I think he was lucky to finish 3rd, he could have been ridden more patiently going into the straight.
December 26, 2021 at 15:26 #1574613WD TTC and VTC!
What was Gavin Sheehan thinking going all out at the back straight on a questionable stayer?
December 26, 2021 at 15:27 #1574614“What was Gavin Sheehan thinking going all out at the back straight on a questionable stayer?”
Agree. I thought Harry Skelton was riding him.
December 26, 2021 at 15:58 #1574626Does seem a race where the form can be forgotten.
Pace was everything here.
Frodon and Minella got into a joust and went too fast early.
Clan was too close to that fast pace.
Chantry never jumped.
Lost gets lost at Kempton and probably not as good as he was.
Mr Fisher has always been inconsistent. Doesn’t jump consistently either.
Saint Calvados was in the best position early but in a fast run race was rushed around horses far too quickly before the home straight.
That leaves just Asterion and Tornado who were both towards the back. Stayed on to have the race between them at the last fence.Tornado may or may not have won it in other circumstances, but – given a long time off – some of these will probably prove better than the winner.
Value Is EverythingDecember 26, 2021 at 16:06 #1574630Agree with most of that Ginger but Minella Indo was beaten too far out for my liking to blame the early pace.
I suspected before the race he needed better ground, spring air and an undulating track in Gloucestershire to be seen at his best. I still think that is the case!

You must’ve been watching a different race, Ginge. Asterion was prominent early and never worse than mid-div. He certainly wasn’t “towards the back” at any stage of the race.
December 26, 2021 at 16:31 #1574639That’s fair comment Glad’, but in a fast run race was suited by Frodon, Clan and Saint going for home in earnest a lot sooner than Asterion. ie Asterion was in 6th of the then 8 runners left after jumping the one before the finishing straight.
Value Is EverythingDecember 26, 2021 at 16:53 #1574650They were all pretty well bunched throughout. Asterion Forlonge was always handy enough. Criticising Frost for trying to repeat last years winning tactics is extremely harsh / daft.
BUY THE SUN
December 26, 2021 at 17:07 #1574653Frost didn’t do what she did last year TTC.
It’s not about position / leading – it’s about pace.
She went much faster this year. Maintaining that pace in that ground was physically impossible.David Mullins went the most economical pace thoughout.
Value Is EverythingDecember 26, 2021 at 17:22 #1574656The sectionals will reveal how fast Bryony was going, agree with Minella beaten too far out.
Sheehan from the same mould as desperate Dan, well we now know these two whom Framcombe was referring to, the pony club boys.December 26, 2021 at 17:32 #1574658Great shout TTC.
Danny Mullins rode a corker.
Saint Calvados jockey rode him as he knows him.
Acts on the ground, put him into the race in a way to get him round. Seemed out of sorts and in danger of losing touch early on.
First run for over 300 days and a great record when fresh. On a great mark now and Nicholls can find more improvement over the season.
VTC brilliant call well done.December 26, 2021 at 18:00 #1574669Thanks Sam, and also thanks to DBR, Graham, and Grass
Well done Tatling
December 26, 2021 at 19:41 #1574683Well done winners , like ginger I can’t have it as a form line , we,ll need to see if there is a issue with Minella but it was obv Frodon was there to try and set up for CDO , the fact the winner is such a big price for the GC tells u the bookies can’t have it either , A plus tard on the season form is looking rock solid for the GC
December 26, 2021 at 20:21 #1574695The main difference between this and last year was that after getting the lead from the early battle every time Bryony tried to slow it down to get a breather into Frodon, Minella Indo up went alongside and forced her to go faster and that was always going to tell later in the race.
The much softer ground was also against Frodon from being able to repeat last years tactics and considering how the race went he has done extremely well to stick on to finish 4th.
It clearly paid to sit well off the suicidal pace but I wouldn’t have any confidence in the result being confirmed at Cheltenham mainly because off the fact a lot of the horses won’t run in the Gold Cup and it is very unlikely the same tactics will be applied to the ones that do turn up.
One would just hope that a hard race like that doesn’t take its toll as we know horses these days don’t tend to take hard races as well as in the past…might be lucky to see some of them again before Cheltenham.
December 26, 2021 at 20:26 #1574696Be interesting to see what comes out regarding minella , has the GC marked another good horse
December 26, 2021 at 21:02 #1574703So reminiscent of the 1987 Beau Ranger/Dessie/Cybrandian blitz which set the race up for Nupsalla; Minella’s running was too bad to be true, they had clearly decided on tactics beforehand. HDLG may be right, the GC is attritional
December 26, 2021 at 21:07 #1574705I also think from that run the gold cup has left its mark on another hero Minella Indo was well beat
Chantry House jumping was poor still only 7year old though, and pulled up way to early to know how good he may be?
Lost in translation doesn’t seem suited by Kempton has he run in this race poorly three times now?VF x
