MikkyMo73, you need help if you think you can win doing placepots on a regular basis.

The 30% overround does not equate to 30% profit. It is a theoretical value that equates to a gross profit in an ideal market for the bookmaker.

Never understand the animosity towards Mr Curley. I’m sure he would be your pal if you rung you in advance every time Clive.

At the end of the day the whole thing is a game. If you can be bothered to invest time and energy into winning the price war you’ve still got to pick winners and quite honestly peoples time would be better spent on that than worrying about "value". Unless you bet for a living I just don’t believe its worth the energy. Unless you’re a tight fisted miser with nothing much else to do.

Have you checked my blog Wallace. It’s all there too see mate, all evidence there to see – After about 3 weeks, I am in profit of nearly £500, sorry, £450 after yesterdays loss.

I have done the placepot regularly for as long as I can remember, since they came into betting shops in fact around 13 or 14 years ago. I have only kept a track of my profit/loss for the last 5 years and I have never finished out of pocket once in any given flat or jump season.

In the jumps season of 2004/2005 I made a total profit of over £2700 by just spending £20 or so per placepot. My worst result was the flat last season where my profit was just £240 on all stakes (again, usually a £20 placepot).

So for more proof Wallace, I would be grateful if you followed my blog for the remainder of the flat and the next jumps season – I will post placepots 3/4 times a week, every week. And if you still think I need help after Aintree in April, then give me a shout 8)

My profit/loss will be there for everyone to follow – all the time.

Wallace, Pat Naylor, the UK’s most successful punter, is a commited perm-placepot player. Like me, he is happy to play against a 27% takeout over 6 races on the assumption that at least 40% of the pool is total mug money.
Bookmakers take an average 20% PER RACE, thus making multiple bets at traditional odds the worst value of all.
Keep doing the placepot Mikky, it’s one of the few profitable outlets for the clued-up punter.

    Cheers WW.

I don’t claim to be a serious punter in any way, shape or form, in fact one of the reasons I do the placepot is because I am far from being a serious punter – it is a low budget bet that can give you hours of fun. For the first few years I used to just do £2 straight lines, then I discovered you could perm your selections – and that’s when I got really serious about it.

I still make mistakes to this day, my blog proves that, but I never hide behind them – and despite some school boy errors, or errors I told myself I would never make, I am still showing a healthy profit on what I have put up on my blog so far.

I have a few rules that I stick to when I do the placepot – and I would say I stick to those rules gospel about 4 out of 6 races per day – it’s the 1 or 2 races where you have to take that risk that can result in you making a healthy profit or not. I know if I stick to my few systems I should always show a profit on the placepot over any given period of time (I usually go by seasons). My blog will hopefully prove that for the remainder of the flat and the next jumps season.

Thanks for your comments though WW.

I don’t bother reading blogs or playing against a 27% rake so well done and carry on if you are happy.

    Ignorance is bliss Wallace 8)

Only joking mate. But a bit confused to why you say I need help if I think I can make a profit on the placepot, when you haven’t bothered to check the facts that I am clearly making a profit :D

I just hope I can keep in profit lol.

I dare say there are many ways of making profit in anything you can bet on, it just so happens that the placepot is my favourite and most successful way.

In all fairness to Wallace, the 30% take out is mental .. Tote are keeping 30p out of every £ you put in and divvying up the remainder between the winners.

Saying that, pool betting can be very profitable if you know when to play and when not to play.

Perm Placepots are my bread & butter and love the big meetings like Royal Ascot, Cheltenham, Aintree etc. With the huge pools and all the £1 & £2 straight lines it means just one "result" means a decent divi

Having said that, would be more than happy for the Tote to reduce their takeout

I can see pool betting at major meetings may be worthwhile but I could not get involved in any pool bet with huge rake. The difference between winning and losing at this game is is a fine balance.

UK Tote is a waste of time unless your going for a jackpot or scoop 6 , saying that 27% take out on placepot is still less than a place acca with traditional Bookies!!

Someone said that 130% over-round wouldn`t gaurantee the Bookie a profit of 30%, very true , if all runners where laid to take out same amount the rake would be 23.08%

The SP system is laughable and no serious player would get involved with taking the End price, Betfair or shopping around is the only way to go which brings me onto a question i couldn`t answer as i don`t visit betting shops in the UK.

What type of stake could i get covered at an early price in a standard Ladbrokes shop?, lets say the race was an average h`cap at a decent track like York?

    Thanks

Providing you are not trying to get on something ‘hot’ i.e. pricewise, telephone tipster, massive rick etc, I’d speculate, (no more than that) that you’d be able to back something to take out 2k no questions asked and probably more once they clear it through head office.

David Johnson Thanks for your imput!

I`m in Baden Baden as i write and attending their annual summer festival, i know the German scene and i know where i can get a decent bet, their are two Bookmakers on the track here Springer and Albers, it appears the latter will lay a bet to take out 5K (Euro) and a little bit more depending on the horse, Springer on the other hand laid me bets of €5000 win @ 3,3 on what would relate to a 45-70 H`cap, 6000 Macabre (Ex Godolphin racing in a low grade h`cap) at 2,7, 9,900 Mi Emma at odds of 2,6 (Gp race) and 5000 Oliviana @6,5 in a low grade h`cap!!

Only the latter bet was refered

Just got me thinking about the UK, i used to get really pissed off with the knockbacks, i just wanted to know if things have changed!!

Don`t get me wrong most German Bookies are real “Weich Ei“ (Got no balls) just like their English counterparts but theirs a few who will take a decent bet even though they know you will beat them, Springer in particular stands is ground and he doesnt care who he`s taking on!!

Any online Bookie similiar? that you know of?

Bet365 where useless then they had a change of management and things improved, however, they appear to be returning to bet €3.65!! (Maximum)

Betfair does me for most but some of those each way bets at decent odds are available at bigger prices with traditional Bookies, it`s just that most wont take a bet, would be nice to know who will?

    Cheers

I think you can get closed down for the most stupid bets and I would say that no-one takes a decent e/w bet anywhere.

    Tony,

OOI do you know if Mi Emma is going for the Coolmore Fusaichi Pegasus Group 1 at Leopardstown next weekend? It’s entered for that and an all-aged Group 2 race at Koeln on 23/09. I know connections may think the Coolmore will come a bit early but after what it managed last weekend I would put it in the much more valuable race for fillies only rather than take on the likes of Aspectus for 40k 1st place money.
Time I enquired about having Sport Welt shipped out here, even if it would arrive too late for the races I’d get news on things like this.

    Cheddy,

Theirs not much of her (Mi Emma) and i don`t think she achieved a great deal in beating “Soldier hollow“ over 1600 metres,if you want to watch the race you can register by:

    Video Archiv
    28 August 6th race

Koenig Turf was too close up for my liking, all the same i think the trainer will be looking for fast ground as she clearly acts best given top of the ground so i doubt you will see her in Ireland.

With regards to getting a Sport-welt delivered to Malta i wouldn`t be too optimistic despite the fact that the cards are printed 2 days beforehand,i have a lot to do with Malta and from experience even “fast post requires 3 days“however, you can stay updated at:-

    http://www.galopp-online.de

Unusually for this time of the year the going was fast all week, Mountain high was the disappointment for me , i was also surprised that Quijano was allowed to keep the race especially if you take into opinion the disqualification of Bahama Mama at the Spring meeting!!
