Just seeing the replay on Channel 4 – and I’ve realised Kauto wasn’t wearing his customary noseband.
Any idea why?

So don't run, just like the others always do
March 19, 2011 at 20:12 #346259well spotted, i hadn’t even noticed, and just went to look at a replay

March 19, 2011 at 20:32 #346264I noticed that Kauto wasn’t wearing it in the pre-parade ring. I looked at Midnight Chase, then Tidal Bay, and finally Long Run – they were all sporting their regular attire.
For some odd reason I thought they were going to put it on Kauto later!!
It wasn’t until after the race I asked my mate "Was Kauto wearing his noseband?"
Leave it off and, if connections decide to continue, let him bowl along like yesterday – he looked so happy throughout the race and his jumping was nigh-on perfect.
On his day there’s no better jumper in the country and he stays forever, so I say let him apply pressure to the field and make THEM jump.
I want to see him attack those Railway fences one more time – and the bet365 is just the race for him.

I understand how you feel – he’s my favourite, and the thrill coming down the hill on Friday when he got them all on the go was unforgettable.
But would you really want to see him lumping round a huge weight, with almost everything else out of the handicap, in a race which … well, no longer has much kudos, or even a real name?
For myself, I’d not be sorry if they were to retire him now, after his heroics on Friday. We know that the Aintree Bowl is not his race (Old Vic beat him there in his pomp) and those ageing legs turned to jelly in the last furlong at Cheltenham.
March 19, 2011 at 23:25 #346296I think Punchestown would be a much better target for him to see him out on a high note. If anything I think he was ridden too close to the pace as he clearly was running empty towards the finish, almost as if they switched tactics with him and the tank and I’m afraid it did not work!
Unfortunately Kauto Star is now starting to regress, three runs this year are conslusive evidence but not regressed so much he still can’t compete and I think he’d be unlikely to find anything to beat him at Punchestown, unlikely to see Long Run I expect and certainly no Denman, maybe Imperial Commander but he wasn’t sound finishing in the GC so doubtful for now.
March 19, 2011 at 23:39 #346297Kauto finished absolutely legless. I know he was ridden more positively than usual, but those tactics didn’t stop him finishing with gusto in the 2008 Betfair Bowl.
Now Kauto’s races are taking so much out of him, the LAST place I would like to see him is that race at Sandown. He would be pulled up. The Sandown ground would worry me too, since it seems like at least two horses who run in the Bet365 are guaranteed to come back with tendon injuries. It has been that way in recent years, anyway.

I don’t think anyone would deny Kauto Star an honourable retirement, but he still travels so well that I’d actually consider running him in the Melling Chase. He didn’t seem to mind being in front so far out yesterday and two-and-a-half miles around Aintree is probably ideal at this stage of his career.
He’s got one decent race left in him and I’d be amazed if he wasn’t good enough to hand Alberta’s Run’s arse to him.
March 20, 2011 at 00:41 #346302Think nosebands aren’t in with Nicholls at the minute, Master Minded also lost the band this season.

Kauto has lost much of his speed, which is probably why he was ridden as prominently as he was, and 2 1/2 miles would do him no favours at all imo, (Witness his one paced effort around Kempton’s sharp 3m in the last King George).
Wouldn’t be the first old-stager to be revitalised by the distance of the Betfred, and not inconceivable that he could give the weight away either, considering the calibre of horses he beat in the Gold Cup against those he’d meet at Sandown.
Not sure I’d want to see it, but the level weight options, at the distance he’d still be a force at, are almost non-existent anyway.March 20, 2011 at 01:49 #346309kauto needs grass and mud and lots of rolling around in it
. We may see him next year – might be in the KG as he wont have to carry silly amounts of weight.he has nothing to prove and enjoys his racing – the only thing i worry about is him getting hurt – as long as he doesnt i have no problem with it. they wont give him any hard races and ruby will look after him
