The greatest steeplechaser of my lifetime, of any lifetime. The reason I’m into racing.
Lord of Lord, King of King (George)s, Conquering Lion of Ditcheat.
Genuinely gutted.

So don't run, just like the others always do
June 30, 2015 at 12:21 #1118574Certainly the best I’ve ever seen. And we were very fortunate that he had such a great rival in Denman – they both highlighted just how good the other one was.
June 30, 2015 at 13:15 #1118577I think it was coming into Kauto’s second season that Paul Nicholl’s gave a TV interview, where he was asked to nominate one horse from the yard. “Don’t forget this Kauto Star” was the trainer’s statement and I made sure that I didn’t.
The horse went on to fulfil his trainer’s confidence, and then some, in a career that makes sure nobody who ever saw a horse jump a fence will “forget this Kauto Star”
Versatile and magnificent, a true legend of the game. Sleep well pal.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
June 30, 2015 at 13:25 #1118578Terrible news. You think that when a horse retires in one piece he’ll have a long and honourable retirement but life doesn’t always work like that.
I’ll never forget the sheer emotion of that 2011 Betfair win. The sight of Nicholls running down the track and one of Simon Holt’s finest commentaries will live long in the memory.
June 30, 2015 at 18:49 #1118619Awful news
A true great.
June 30, 2015 at 20:20 #1118622Terrific horse. Very sad news. Thoughts to all but special thoughts for Clifford Baker who has had some tough breaks and who loved this horse.
June 30, 2015 at 21:28 #1118634He brought loads of rays into those winter afternoons and made our hearts glad to have seen him. He made us even more besotted with this sport.
Larger than life.
Magnificent.

July 1, 2015 at 00:32 #1118641I never really took to him at all, nearly always wanted him to be beaten until his great comeback win in the Betfair but I had to concede he was the best in the modern era, particularly in the King George. I didn`t really like his connections but feel for them all on this news
July 1, 2015 at 08:17 #1118645Hard to believe I know but I even detected an anti racing slant in the report I saw in a BBC news report on the death. No mention of dressage but “an accident jumping whilst in training”. While the sports reporter was clearly clueless on the subject such ignorance from the national broadcaster is shocking.
July 1, 2015 at 08:34 #1118646And that report has led to the usual comments from Animal Rights people I believe. Like pilgarlic, I was never a fully paid up member of the Kauto Star fan club, but his last King George win was one of the most amazing things I’d ever seen, and he did then become L’Extraterrestrial in my eyes. I still can’t believe he’s gone.
July 1, 2015 at 10:49 #1119348Racing post states the accident happened last Wednesday, Clive Smith saw the horse at Colletts yard on Friday. I have just read on another website that he was being ridden, rider fell off and he galloped into a wall. I truly hope that did not happen and we are being informed of the truth via the media.
July 1, 2015 at 11:44 #1119552There are a lot of rumours flying around. We do need to know the truth, however awful that may be. I hope it isn’t true, though as people will ignore the fact that, had he stayed at Ditcheat he could just as easily have sustained an injury on the gallops there.
July 2, 2015 at 15:56 #1120864We now have a very unfortunate public spat between the owner and trainer.
Not sure of the rights and wrongs but it is unseemly and unbecoming with the horse having died. A period of silence from these folk on their differences of opinion would be appreciated please.
Like some others, I never really took to the horse (don’t know why, Nicholls might come into it) but he was a very fine chaser indeed who did not deserve this premature death.
I would not agree that he was the best chaser of all time. Of the horses I have seen, the best chaser was the one and only Arkle; even although he broke the heart of my hero as I was getting into racing: Mill House.
July 2, 2015 at 16:55 #1120889Yes; Mill House was my first love. I only forgave Arkle a few years ago.

Not all that hard to believe. On Derby Day the red button news bore the headline “2 horses die in race”. Actually nothing to do with the Derby, or horse racing at all (Appleby Horse Fair as I recall). I don’t know what’s going on with the Beeb but somebody clearly has some serious issues
July 2, 2015 at 17:59 #1120927More explanation on his injuries and treatment here:
Yard vet Tom Campbell told the Racing Post that they believe the horse tried to jump out of the paddock, but fell and landed on his left side.
“We were worried he had a pelvis fracture,” he told the paper. “However, with injuries like that you are reluctant to move a horse to hospital as the more you move him the more you can make him unstable, so he was placed on box rest and cross-tied.”
However, they believe the horse then went down in the cross tie twice on Saturday.
Hattie Lawrence, treating vet at Valley Equine Hospital, said she believed there was a “material change in his condition” on Saturday. She said he had becoming “increasingly wobbly” over Sunday and Monday, to the point where he couldn’t stand.”
“He got down [on the cross tie] on Saturday before I’d seen him and almost certainly as a result of this his injuries from Wednesday were exacerbated at this point.
“The injuries in his neck were there but not yet apparent until then.
“The complications [laminitis and pneumonia] arose from him having to stand in the same position for a prolonged period of time, the only way to keep him safe.
“He was being treated with anti inflammatories and antibiotics and managed in a way to keep him and calm and quiet.
“It is unusual to have neck and pelvic injuries simultaneously but in any horse racing or falling this could occur.”
July 2, 2015 at 18:29 #1120931Kauto Star – a great champion . A sad end to a fantastic career .
His five King George wins will never be equalled.
