It’s this thread again… If anybody wants to share information, speculation and musing on this season’s juveniles then please feel free to do so.

This Saturday will see the emergence of this season’s first UK juvenile hurdlers at Hexham. There is, however, an exceedingly interesting race at Auteuil for fillies this afternoon. There literally couldn’t have been a better field assembled for such a race at this time of the season and if a UK/IRE trainer imports a filly who runs well in this race, it wouldn’t be too long before said filly earns a quote for the Triumph.

Here’s a list of runners with up to date PMU prices and a brief description in broken English for each runner;-

    <!– m –>http://www.horseraces.pmu.fr/racecards/race/6227<!– m –>

This is the site I generally use. Click on the horse then on "Performances détaillées" to get detailed info on previous performances.

    <!– m –>http://www.zone-turf.fr/programmes/r1-a … ml?#262928<!– m –>

And here’s a very rough run through the runner’s pedigrees from my own personal stash.

    A La Luna – 1/0 Aubane (1.LstJuv Aut) .5 Miss Aubane 2/1 Armaguedon (1.Ayr HcCh)
    L’Espiguette – 4/1 House Music (1st 2007 Prix du Cheval de l’Annee – Lstd Hcp)
    Wiccalina – 3/3 Tiraldo (2nd 1998 Worcester Novices Chase)
    Kada Rique – 1/0 Kadabelle (1. G3 4yoCh)
    Biche d’Oo – 2/1 Michel De Moeurs (2nd 2000 Dovecote)
Miss Bailly – .5 Prince Picard (won 2 listed)
Nouma Jelois – 4/4 Chope Royale (1st two listed chases)
    Momita Has – 1/0 Monika (1st 2006 Prix Gaston Branère – Lstd 4yo Hcp)
Mangenie – 3/2 Long Run (THE Long Run)
Boreale du Berlais – 1/0 Bonita Du Berlais (1st Lstd Juv Aut) 2/1 Nikita Du Berlais (2nd GCdH)

The race starts at 1.20 UK/IRE time and should be easy enough to find if one is so inclined but I will try to find a link to the race in any case.

Kada Rique proved that her 20l Enghien win was not a fluke by comfortably coming up on top. Helped force the pace with the much better fancied L’Espiguette but whilst the latter faded to finish last, Kada Rique kept on to win by a length and a half.

If I have the time on Sunday morning, I will post their ancestral highlights.

I might have a crack at the juvenile hurdles this season just for a change……I’ve never really bothered with them before

Any idea approx. how many races there are in the season ?

Also……when do the juveniles start running in regular handicap hurdles open to older horses ?

During the 2013/2014 season, there were 94 Juvenile Hurdles in the UK (not counting abandonments)

There used to be a race at Hereford in early-mid September that was open to 3YO+. It used to be a selling hurdle, then it became a novices’ handicap before the course shut down.

Last season, the first 3yo+ handicaps were at Exeter and Wincanton on the 10th and 17th of October. There wasn’t a juvenile handicap hurdle until early March.

Here’s a clip of Sunday’s race at Auteuil, won impressively by favourite Bonito du Berlais.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=opc2EDlEFjs

His trainer, Arnaud Chaillé-Chaillé, said after the race that the winner would be going on holiday at his breeder’s farm which wouldn’t suggest he’s coming over here any time soon.

On horse from France who has made the journey is Cyclop and he makes his UK debut tomorrow evening at Uttoxeter.

Cyclop was trained in France by Patrice Quinton and comes here after winning an Auteuil claimer. Indeed, his last four runs were in claimers although for the level, the form is decent. His run on the 19th of March at Enghien is eye-catching as he finished only three and a quarter lengths behind Karelcytic whilst giving away two and a bit pounds, and finishing ahead of two subsequent winners. Karelcytic has since gone on to finish second in a listed race at Auteuil behind the aforementioned Bonito du Berlais. Cyclop took an x-rated fall on his next start at Auteuil whilst in the process of running a bit race before finishing third at the same track the next month. Last time out, Cyclop finally broke his duck at Auteuil by taking this claimer from a large field which contained two winners.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgeqMK5Yb4A

Cyclop was subsequently bought after the race by Ferdy Murphy for 27,500€ before being sold a week later for £35,000 in a private sale. The King’s Theatre gelding is from a lovely jumping family which includes the likes of Jim, Grivette, Royaleety and Mesange Royale. Cyclop, especially carrying a certain STD, ought to be afforded the utmost respect in any early season Juvenile hurdle although in a rare set of circumstances, several large yards send juveniles to Uttoxeter tomorrow including Pipe, O’Neill, King and Sherwood. Of the "home team", I rate Alan King’s Gimme Five as the strongest even if his profile isn’t anything but ordinary. Intermath is thoroughly exposed and despite being a half brother to Viaduct Joey, doesn’t look like a stayer and Camacho has a poor record with jumpers. On paper, I’m really befuddled as to how Arthur’s Melody has joined Jonjo O’Neill. Bountiful Sin would be worth a second look since Sinndars can do very well in juvenile hurdles.

    Cyclop
    Kings Theatre 2/1

    Mesange Royale

1st Prix Alain du Breil (G1), Auteuil 2004

    1st West Yorkshire Hurdle (G2), Wetherby 2003
    Fast Green
    Green Tune .5

    2nd Prix de Londres (55), Cagnes-sur-Mer 2013
    Intermath
    Camacho .5

    Viaduct Joey

    1st Handicap Hurdle (111), Galway 2013

    Grrrr………Cyclop is a non runner

He was sure to go off favourite and ‘make the price’ for all the others

I was going to oppose him on the basis that this is a very different test to what he’s used to ……his win was 18F on heavy ground

Today is 16F on good ground and a tight track

    he’s also got a 7lb penalty

Obviously it’s difficult to be dogmatic about relative ratings as he’s never run on the flat……..but his hurdles RPRs would make him around a 70 horse on the flat with a 7lb penalty…..he might not have had as much in hand of a few of these as the prices would suggest

I’m not sure I’ll bother with it now……

Glad you did and I will endeavour to keep it going until the end of the season.

And you’re right there was one at Hexham and it was won by this chap.

    http://oi61.tinypic.com/e96ixj.jpg

Whilst his superiority was convincing, his jumping wasn’t particularly so. Nevertheless, with the anticipated improvement in that department, there’s no reason why he shouldn’t pick up another juvenile before the stronger types emerge.

That being said, I believe we already saw an above average type last Friday in Alan King’s Gimme Five who jumped very quickly in the main and won in nice style.

I have collated a list of the top 100 juveniles from the past five seasons. Here’s a list of the trainers whose charges featured in this list. The trainers you’ve mentioned feature prominently.

The third Juvenile Hurdle of the season takes place at Market Rasen tomorrow and the obvious horse of note is Nigel Twiston-Davies’ Goodbye Dancer. Goodbye Dancer has had two runs on the flat in the French provinces, finishing third on his debut at Seiches-sur-le-Loir before winning at Loudéac. On his debut, he ran very close to Karelcytic – The claimer turned listed performer mentioned earlier in the thread. In his second race, the fourth has since won over hurdles and third won over course and distance next time out before being beaten in a couple of claimers. Whilst putting the form into context is far from an exact science, I’d mark Goodbye Dancer’s flat rating in the low-mid seventies.

For those interested, here’s a clip of Goodbye Dancer’s win at Loudéac. Here, he is in the black top, white sleeves and pink cap and epaulets.

Goodbye Dancer has practically nothing to speak of in terms of relatives on the dam’s side and the sire, Dragon Dancer, has yet to have a winner. However he did have two runners over hurdles last season and both were placed. Plus, being a son of Sadler’s Wells, he ought to have no problems siring jumpers.

The two with hurdles experience, Izbushka (second Hexham) and Big Kenny (fifth Uttoxeter) do not bring a high level of form to the table so it would be unsurprising to see this race go to a hurdling newcomer. Former Godolphin inmate Istimraar has the most convincing flat form on offer whilst Jennie Candlish, whom saddles Ain’t No Surprise, is always warranted respect in these early season juveniles.

Goodbye Dancer was a very impressive winner and it will a very good horse to lower his colours at this time of the year.

Absolutely. Gimme Five looked well above average for the time of year but Goodbye Dancer looks on another level. He jumped very quickly at times and if he learns to chill out a fair bit, either he’ll be up to Cheltenham standards or he’ll be an average juvenile in a vintage crop.

There are no more juvenile hurdles until the 13th of July so in the meantime, I’ll probably be doing some house keeping and general thumb twiddling.

Indeed, 16.10 this afternoon sees the last Auteuil juvenile until September.

No real stars on show here but the form of Kotkikova and Azura du Kalon gets a proxy examination as does some provincial and claiming form.

    Thank you very much Befair.

There wasn’t one last year as I was rather busy for one reason or another and the first few juveniles had slipped me by. Once I had a bit more time on my hands, the impetus had gone.

This year, however, I’ve been keeping an eye on the French Juveniles since they emerged in March so I’m looking forward to this season with relish.

There are six listed juveniles during the spring season, three for each gender. Here’s a quick run through the male races. The images show the finishing positions of the horses with the weight in brackets (kilos – 1lb = 2.2kg), RPR (which is largely useless) and cumulative distances. The lines below show subsequent outings.

The first was the Prix Wild Monarch which is a race restricted to hurdling debutants. Despite this stipulation, the race has a remarkable history of producing some fantastic horses. Chief among the race’s graduates are Long Run, Golden Silver and Nickname but the likes of Kauto Stone, Chapoturgeon, Mon Parrain, Hinterland, Iron Man, Dear Villez, De Boitron, Le Duc and Domtaline have all made their jumps debut in this race.

The second was the Prix Stanley where Prix Wild Monarch made his return. Again, this race has an impressive race history. Leading jumps sire Robin des Champs appeared in the 2000 renewal and since then, Golden Silver, Twinlight, Iron Man, Dear Villez, Don’t Be Shy and Kapga de Cerisy have lined up as have French hurdling star Le Grand Luce and recent Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris victor Storm of Saintly.

***Just a warning if you wish to watch the clip… Le Baron Noir sadly takes a fatal crash at the penultimate obstacle.

    Closing stages

The final spring listed contest was the Prix Aguado, the racecard for which I believe I posted earlier in the thread. Naturally, some of the names will pop up more than once but again, this is a race which boasts a fine history or runners. Both Robin des Champs and Saint des Saints have lined up along with Long Run, Nickname, Twinlight, Roi du Val, Don’t Be Shy, Le Volfoni, Le Grand Luce, Remember Rose, Vol Solitaire and Othermix.

And finally for now, I attached a bit of a "cheat sheet" for the rest of the relevant male juvenile races contested during the spring. Obviously, most of these horses won’t see these isles and a lot will probably drift into obscurity in any case. Nevertheless, it is fun to be able to contextualise any horses which do jump the Channel. Clips for the races below aren’t difficult to find but if you’re having trouble finding any then please don’t hesitate to ask me to find/upload the race. I will do a similar summary for the fillies in the next day or so.

Here’s a similar summary for the female juveniles. To be honest, there isn’t much to go by for the history of each race given that the vast majority of racemares will race for two seasons at the most before getting packed off to stud…

The Prix Wild Monarch is, like the male counterpart, restricted to hurdling debutants.

    Closing stages

The Prix d’Iena was a race I went into some detail earlier in this thread. Four have come out to contest the third listed fillies race.

Finally, the Prix Sagan did not feature Kada Rique among the field. Nevertheless, there was Kotkikova who hails from that wonderful family of Kotkijet, Katko, Kotkita, Katarino, Katenko etc and was a very warm order following her winning debut

Attached is the cheat sheet for the fillies.

Also, today is the second day of the Arqana sales and as I type, the Aga Khan consignment has started. Previous horses to have come from the Aga Khan include Dispour, Diakali, Kazlian, Ranjaan, Shamsikhan and Umadachar so if there’s anything worth reporting, I’ll pop it on here. Of course, if anybody knows better than I do about the goings on in Deauville (somebody must), then please feel free to share!
