My dad. He loves Chris Wall and has a share in one of his. Bad news is he only had 2 quid on him! Can I say again how incredible this makes Frankel or am I REALLY boring you all now?! Doesnt say much for the Guineas form though does it when the 5th home gets beat like that.
On a positive note I was delighted to see dear old Specific Gravity win again. Some of us silly old fools once thought he might be a Derby horse! On his best form he was thrown in today and the rain probably helped as well. Nicely ridden by Pat Cosgrave who doesnt get many rides for Sir H but never lets him down when he does.

Who did you think I was referring to when I said "some of us old fools"!!!

August 31, 2012 at 19:19 #411618It’s been a while but I have been busy fighting Frankel’s corner on the main thread.
Not often that I fancy a Cecil horse at 20-1 but Late Telegrapg falls right into that category tomorrow. He has been dropped considerably for his last run when he was actually a little unlucky not to finish closer. I think he will go very close tomorrow and can’t believe he will be 20-1.

September 4, 2012 at 13:54 #412016A really good weekend of racing awaits and there are two that I like.
My great mate Nathaniel goes in the Irish Champion and I think he will take all the beating. Snow Fairy is much respected and she did beat my selection the last time they raced over this trip but I think track and conditions will suit much better this time. I was amazed that SF won first time out this season but would also be concerned that this race follows too soon.
AOB looks like he will run Imperial Monarch and he has a lot to prove with the 3yo’s looking a moderate bunch to say the least. Also not sure that 10f on good ground will be his best trip.
I expect Nathaniel to be ridden aggressively and hope he has a bit too much for the fast finishing super mare.
As I type this I am listening to John G saying this is a prep for the Arc! Good news and bad I suppose as I have backed him AP for the Arc so it is good news that he runs but he expects him to come on a lot for this run! As he is only 13-8 now I may just wait for raceday!
JG has also said that only Thought Worthy and Michelangelo go in the St Leger which is bad news for fans of Shantaram and Great Heavens but fantastic news for Camelot. I still have my AP voucher for Thomas Chippendale who is now 33’s! Doesnt look a bad bet at those prices.
My second bet (now my first) is Strong Suit in the Sprint. I have always liked this horse and think he should have won last time out. I think the 6f on fast ground will be right up his street and he should be there or thereabouts. EW at 8’s for me.

September 4, 2012 at 14:03 #412017Now THERE’S a nice filly!!!! Liber Nauticus – very impressive. Beautifully bred, big, strong, bound to improve a ton. Welcome back to the big time Sir Michael?

September 6, 2012 at 11:16 #412175So the good old punters friend Mr Aiden O Brien has done it again and has tricked everyone by deciding to run SNA instead of IM on Saturday. Why do they have to do that? All the other trainers tell us in plenty of time but he always leaves us guessing.
Oh well I think
SNA
will win and I have backed him EW at 9-2 as I am certain he will at least place. The ground, the track and the way the race will be run will all suit him perfectly. Nathaniel will want to make it a test and I see him kicking on purposefully from about 3 out and SNA swooping late when his stamina and turn of foot kick in. I see Nathaniel fighting him tooth and nail but just favour SNA to get the best of a close finish with SF not far behind. She is of course the fly in the ointment and I have been guilty of under-estimating her before and so will, as usual, do so again!
I have also backed
Martin Chuzzlewit
ew 10-1 at Ascot. He ran a stormer last time out and was the only one who raced up with the pace to finish in the paces. Ridden a bit more conservatively I expect him to go well.
I have also backed another old fav in
Chachamaidee
at 7’s in the Matron Stakes. Back against her own sex, on an easier track and with the ground coming right she has to be nailed on for a place at least.

IM will probably stay in training at 4 Joni. AOB probably thinks the ICS is SNA’s one opportunity of winning a 10f Group 1 before he’s packed off to stud. Something that would help his stallion career.
Some good race reading there Joni.
Although I believe Nathaniel should be favourite, he’s far too short. Reliable line through Farhh gives Nathaniel little more than 1/2 a length in hand over St Nicholas Abbey. Of course Gosden’s horse had 1 1/2 lengths between the two at Ascot, but most recognise Joseph messed up there. Probably should’ve been a length closer (ie distance again of 1/2 a length, not 1 1/2). Yet Nathaniel is 11/8 (42%) and St Nich 4/1 (20%). Does half a length really mean Nat has over double the chance of Nich? Latter is much better value, and former incredibly poor value.
I’ve put a saver on Snow Fairy. Not right up to her best on reappearance, but after injury and a lay off… it was an excellent performance. Not at her best on reapearance last year either, so there’s every indication she”ll be back to her best here. She had 2 1/2 lengths to spare over Saturday’s favourite in last year’s English Champion and although Nathaniel’s probably improved since… is it really enough for a difference of over 11% between the two?
Value Is EverythingSeptember 7, 2012 at 19:40 #412313Another one I like tomorrow is the John Gosden 2 year old
Winsili
and have backed her to win at 5-2. I was taken by her maiden win and think she might turn out to be useful.

Hope Chacha runs another big race but the distance puts me off her
Happy to be proved wrong though

Hi Joni, I picked this horse out of a list of unraced two year olds and she hosed in first time out. Reports suggest she is good. I see that Timeform are putting up Fleeting Smile for the race, but I backed her last time in a Nursery and thought she looked nothing special, off top weight, in third place. There MUST be better fillies out there.
I see Henry Cecil’s Al Waab is entered in the opener at Haydock and, although his form seems modest enough, he is unbeaten and entered in some fancy races. I picked him from the same list as Winsili and will watch him with interest tomorrow, as he really has to step up soon to warrant the big entries.
Good luck punting.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Agree, won’t be backing her over a mile again but hope she runs well today.

Well she eventually got the decision
September 8, 2012 at 16:31 #412449First time I haven’t backed her this season! Oh well…pleased for Sir Henry and all concerned but I’d be pretty annoyed with that decision if I’d backed Duntle.

Sorry Steve – have only just seen this!
Was at the boxing yesterday so missed most of the action but have been catching up this morning.
I thought the two you spoke about were both given too much to do. AL Waab lost the race in the first furlong when I felt Hughsie outrode Ian Mongan and got a very good position relegating Al Waab back to last. The horse took a long while to pick up and is a real galloper. He was outpaced but for me needed to be ridden closer to the gallop. I think he would beat the winner next time especially if he goes for the Royal Lodge at Newmarket where the track will suit him. Looks a nice genuine type who could be up to winning a group race.
Similar comments apply to Winsili though I don’t think she was unlucky but just couldnt pick up quickly off a slow pace. Still a nice prospect for next year.
Delighted for Henry and Chacha deserves to win a Group 1 as she is so consistent. I was surprised she got given the race as the interference was slight but she was only beaten a short head so I suppose you can understand it. I still haven’t got over the worst day of my racing life – when Jacqueline Quest was demoted in the Guineas. This makes partial amends.
As predicted I managed to successfully underestimate Snow Fairy yet again. What a mare she is. I do feel though that a specialist 10f horse beat two specialist 12f horses and not sure the result will be the same at Longchamp. Or maybe I am underestimating her.

Who won, you or the wife?
I thought the ground might be a bit lively for Al Waab as he is out of an In The Wings mare. Looked like he might appreciate a bit of cut and I would think he needs a mile at least.
Winsili’s race was not a ride that Rab Havlin would put be putting on his CV, it seemed a bad idea to be so far back off a slow pace and I think she might bounce back next time in a truly run affair.
I looked at Chigun and saw he was tipped in the form guide I was reading. Promptly decided to leave the race alone and watched him hose in.
Backed eight horses and had five seconds and three thirds. Mother said there would be days like this!!
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
