I would be disappointed if Sir H didnt get a double today and have backed

(6-5) and
Touch Gold
(2-1) and doubled them up.

August 9, 2012 at 13:16 #409336That bloody De Sousa!!! Useless earlier this season when my money was on for the jockeys title and now that it’s too late he starts riding out of his skin and does me on the line!!!!

August 9, 2012 at 15:55 #409349Joni, I would be more about about Great Heavens than Shantaram. Although the latter is a lovely big colt with plenty of scope, his best form, in my mind, is his close second to Main Sequence in the Lingfield Derby Trial.
Great Heavens has improved through the ranks this season and beat Princess Highway by the best part of 4 lengths going away, after looking to have a lot to do at one stage, in The Irish Oaks. Princess Highway saw The Fugue off by 6 lengths previously and even if we accept that Princess Highway failed to confirm earlier superiority over Shirocco Star at The Curragh, then the subsequent win of The Fugue over older horses in The Nassau must be considered a form boost, given that she had only reeled in Shirocco Star in the last stride for second place in the Ribblesdale.
Tommy Chip, as I call him, is an improving colt and, as you say, his form has been boosted by his stablemate who disposed of the disappointing and probably over-rated Michelangelo in The Gordon. I am seriously concerned about the merit of the 3yo colts this season though. Tommy hasn’t got a lot in hand of those who were behind him at Ascot and you could make a case for Noble Mission at 18/1 I would have thought, and Thoughworthy at 20/1 might tempt some people.
I am drawing a pen through the lads and looking to girl power at Doncaster in September. Not the biggest horse, she will be outclassed in the paddock but she seems to be crying out for the trip and I am backing her to beat them all, Camelot included.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
August 9, 2012 at 19:53 #409370A good call Steve and you could well be right. I heard that connections rate her even better than her full brother Nathaniel. Would she be ground dependent like her brother do you think? She has certainly done all her winning so far on a soft surface but you are absolutely right that she is improving all the time and looks a solid bet if they aim her at the race.
With regard to Tommy Chip () whist you are right that he has only a little in hand over his KE vanquished, I think he was the least exposed and the one most open to improvement. Don’t forget he had only won a handicap off 86 the race before and his connections keep saying that he will be more of a 4 year old. If that is true then I would hope he can at least confirm the form of that KE run if not improve on it.

August 9, 2012 at 20:38 #409375Agree Stevie, any going with soft in the description and Great Heavens can beat them all including Camelot.
August 10, 2012 at 07:28 #409390It’s not easy being married to a sports freak my wife will tell you. Last night was spent flicking between the Taekwondo, Athletics and US PGA. Loving every second of it!
I decided to narrow down my selections on the PGA this time and am slightly livid as one of my old favourites Carl Petterson leads overnight. I think this is the first time I have left him out!
Fighting for me this week I have Gmac, Jason Duffner, Rory, Louis Oost and Dustin Johnson. 4 out of 5 are well placed.
Today please all get behind Sarah Stevenson in the Taekwondo. I had the pleasure of working with her a couple of years ago. She is a world champion but has had the most horrific 18 months. She lost both her parents to illness within three months of each other and has been fighting to get fit for the games after a cruciate ligament injury. You could not hope to meet a nicer person and it will make my games if she can win a medal.

August 10, 2012 at 19:18 #409448Brave girl Sarah indeed, gutted she couldn’t do the business today but top level sport is a cruel World, best wishes to her for the future.
First Major I haven’t had a bet on in a few years, been too engrossed in The Olympics to take a proper look so have kept my money in my pocket. The wind had got up today making it a proper test, hope one of your picks come in Joni, Rory has got the talent, if his minds on the job he could be the one to beat, hope he wins for you.
August 11, 2012 at 21:13 #409548Last bet before I go off on me hols. I have always thought
Excelebration
was the second best miler on the planet and I think he will prove it tomorrow. I have backed him to win at 5-2 and had an each way tickle at 8’s on
Most Improved
who doesnt have a huge amount to find on the form book and is very highly regarded. Should be a cracking race anyway.

August 18, 2012 at 08:10 #410059Last day of hols so shouldnt be posting but just noticed 2-1 Strong Suit. Should be odds on so will back to win. Ignore his runs this season – he will win this 3 lenghts.

August 18, 2012 at 14:14 #410098Sorry but that was one of the worst rides i have seen. Livid!!!

August 18, 2012 at 14:37 #410100That was hopeless. I haven’t been betting recently and decided to have a punt on SS as i’ve been waiting for him to get his ground. Sigh. Oh well, with a bit of luck i might get something out of the Leger. Have you had a punt on T Chippendale ?
August 18, 2012 at 15:31 #410110The winner improved for first-time blinkers and ran a fast time, considerably faster than any other race on the card in comparison. It is difficult to know whether Strong Suit could have been closer and still finished as well or whether he just looked unlucky. I think Strong Suit was over-rated for his Challenge Stakes win and had less in hand over the field than the wise ones would have you believe. Lethal Force did not have to improve as much as alleged to beat Strong Suit on the book and 3yo can improve rapidly when they fill out their frame. Those that tried to match early strides with the winner were well-beaten and it is also worth noting that the 3rd home was unbeaten over the trip prior to today.
August 18, 2012 at 18:05 #410115Sorry EF but as this is my thread i WILL get defensive! Bollox!!! Moore waited far too long to get serious by which time the bird had flown. Great ride by Kirby – shocker from Moore. Superman – i will be all over TC like a rash!

August 19, 2012 at 13:00 #410167Thought Christmas had come early when SS was available with Hill’s at 5/2 in the morning, clearly better than the rest, 7f, good ground looked a cert, not Ryan’s finest moment imo.
August 19, 2012 at 14:31 #410176Lethal force put up a good time. Clive Cox came to our West Berkshire Racing Club Derby Preview. Asked about prospects for 2012 he told us not to under estimate Lethal Force. Also mentioned two two year olds to watch out for Reckless Reward who’d (at that time) only won a maiden and Related, winner of a Newbury maiden at the weekend (at that time yet to run).
I remember backing Lethal Force in a Goodwood maiden last year which he failed to win. Thought afterwards he looks temperamental. Headgear and front running tactics have made the horse this year. Improving quite a bit for first time blinkers for a trainer in cracking form.
It is true the Hungerford was won in the best time of the day. (Suspect the Geoffrey Freer was run too quick early, ie not equal fractiions to produce a fast time. Principles all slowing down at the end. Although haven’t timed it).
In the Hungerford Lethal Force probably went a level, good pace, but he was the only one to do so. When only one horse goes the optimum pace for a fast time then the rest are up against it. It is not true that the others could not keep up early on, they just didn’t want to chase an outsider. ie The other jockeys on "prominent runners" (of which there were several in the form book) might have thought it was in their best interests not to chase a horse probably not capable of maintaining the gallop. What looked a fair(ish) decision on form turned out to be (in hindsight) wrong!
Although it wasn’t Ryan Moore’s finest hour (should’ve tried to get closer earlier) Strong Suit is normally a hold up horse. It is the jockeys of the other
prominent
runners who have most to answer.
No doubt Lethal Force deserves credit for improving, just not quite as much as distances suggest. Joni and co deserve to feel unlucky.
Anyway, it’s good to see Strong Suit doing better. But even if ignoring Lethal Force, didn’t beat the others easy enough to believe he’s as good this term. As EF says, it just might be that Newmarket run last year flatters him. Having said that, coat still didn’t look great in the paddock (dull) so could yet show "moore".
All imo of course.
Value Is EverythingAugust 20, 2012 at 19:30 #410275Sorry EF but as this is my thread i WILL get defensive! Bollox!!! Moore waited far too long to get serious by which time the bird had flown. Great ride by Kirby – shocker from Moore. Superman – i will be all over TC like a rash!
Are you not concerned joni that Tom Queally rides Noble Mission?
August 20, 2012 at 20:09 #410279I am not Martin. When the two ran in the same race at Ascot Queally cited his reasons for choosing NM as mainly loyalty to Prince Khaled. There is clearly very little between them but, if gallops reports are to be believed, TC has an edge. I also feel he is less exposed and has the potential for the greater improvement. I am also happy Shantaram is not running!
To be honest it looks a very tricky race and what worries me is where the pace will come from as I don’t really see a front runner there. My guess is that Frankie will make it on Energiser and try to do what he does best and pinch it from the front. TC needed all of the mile and a half to get on top at Acot so I hope they don’t dawdle.
It will be a funny race for me as I have regularly backed three of the six strong field and like Main Sequence as much as I do Noble Mission and TC. However I have taken a real liking to TC this year and have a feeling he will make up into a top middle distance colt. I will stick with him.
By the way is anyone going on Wednesday? It looks a cracking card and I can barely sleep at the moment such is my excitement over "you know who" stepping up in the Juddmonte. More on that tomorrow!
