Thank you very much Joni, it helped a lot indeed!
April 21, 2018 at 01:13 #1351329Great start Joni you must be on Cloud Nine

@hein
Could I just say a little on Gavota.
I really liked the way she ran Altyn Orda to a neck at Newmarket in the Oh So Sharp last October and Prince Khalid’s horses are in good form, he won with his only two runners at the Craven Meeting Purser and Breath Caught who like Gavota is by Bated Breath, Altyn Orda has already shown that she has trained on by running a decent 2nd to Soliloquy in the Nell Gwynn. I’m certain Gavota will run a big race for you and the only reason I’m not backing her is that I have pinned my colours to Tajaanus this season and the Richard Hannon yard is off to an early winning start so all my fingers are crossed for her to win the Fred Darling (as she is my Darling
) Good luck Hein Jac

Thank you very much, I really hope Gavota will make it,
and good luck with your darling Tajaanus too
April 21, 2018 at 01:32 #1351334Thank you hein
A dead heat would keep us both happy
I think we might see a real battle up front as both fillies love to fight for the lead.Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...April 21, 2018 at 10:41 #1351410Dead heat’s not necessary, Jac
I decided not to play Gavota, cos on Irish Racing I found a statement from Charlton that she is still wearing her winter coat, and combined with Joni’s concerns this was a little too much for me.
Have a great racing day you two Frankelites
, I go rowing now.April 21, 2018 at 15:50 #1351504Well played hein

Another winning day and I think that Taqdeer will win a lot of races. He was only really getting the hang of it in the last 50 yards. One to look out for at Royal Ascot I think.
I was quite interested to see the run of Expert Eye and funnily enough I wouldnt entirely rule him out of the Guineas. The Stoute horses are really needing the run and this one was surely no different. He didn’t really settle and could have done with a stronger gallop. But the biggest thing that would keep me interested would be if the ground came up quicker. I think you’ll see a different horse next time on better ground and he will definitely end up being the best horse to come out of that race.

April 24, 2018 at 20:47 #13518401 bet for tomorrow. When a trainer is as red hot as Charlie Appleby he is worth following. Warburton isn’t one of his best but he should go well on ground I think he will like.
£25ew Warburton – 8-1 – 5.00 Epsom placed

April 24, 2018 at 23:44 #1351855Good luck with Warburton Joni
and maybe have a little on Christopher Wood who ran a decent 2nd behind Breath Caught on Craven Day with Maksab behind him. Also Thundering Blue is back 3.55
you have to love him.
Those are my two tomorrow.I might also go the rev.forecast with Warburton and Christopher Wood in the 5.00.
Bring it home

Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...April 25, 2018 at 20:02 #1351956Sounds like it was an exciting race Jac. I think what you can say about Charlie Appleby’s horses at the moment is that they are almost guaranteed to run their races. They are fit as fleas and it is just a matter of how long they enjoy that advantage. Can it last until Guineas day? If it does then you have to give Masar and Soliloquy chances. Aiden is definitely playing catch up and most of his are needing the run which makes me think that Gustav Klint is a worthy favourite (as he has HAD that run). If I ever laid horses (which I don’t) I’d be laying Saxon Warrior until the cows come home. I’d be amazed if that monster of a horse can be quick enough to win a Guineas. Derby is a different matter… Of course my heart is hoping that Elarqaam can do the business but I just wish we had seen him in a trial. He is very inexperienced and that racecourse gallop didn’t completely convince me that 6-1 is a decent price. If I was to have an ante-post bet on the 2,000 now it would be on Expert Eye (still available at 16-1). I think he will be a different horse next time on better ground but I am just not sure they have definitely decided to run him. Plus I have just had my fingers burnt on Veracious so will probably wait until next week before having any more Guineas bets.
To be honest I think both Classics are wide open unlike the Oaks which is between September and Lah Ti Dar ;)

April 27, 2018 at 07:59 #1352146With the rain falling in buckets I have waited till this morning to place my Sandown bets. I have 4.
In the first I expect to see money for Dream Warrior who was running well on very soft ground last year in France and who has the trainer in form looking after him. I was going to back Fabricate to beat Crystal Ocean first time up but the rain may have scuppered his chances. However there can’t be enough rain for Chilean who did the business for me last time. Obviously the Gosden horse can handle cut as well but mine has proven form at the this level and should be there or thereabouts. Adeyebb should take all the beating but we are assuming he is group class and he will certainly have to be to beat a soft ground specialist in Stormy Antarctic who is also race-fit. I am looking forward to seeing the exciting Highgarden but she is not at a bankable price so my last bet is back with Mr Appleby in the past for Dubhe. I have missed the decent prices but I think he will still win.
25ew Dream Warrior 15-2 – Sandown 1.50 lost
£50ew Chilean – 10-3 – Sandown 3.00 lost
£25ew Stormy Antarctic – 6-1 – Sandown 3.35 placed
£50 win Dubhe – 3-1 – Sandown 5.05 winner

April 27, 2018 at 18:07 #1352210Charlie Appleby saved the day Joni and nice place on Stormy Antartic at 6/1

It’s been a long time since the winners of the Craven and the Nell Gwynn have taken the Guineas home but have to agree with you about CA’s horses being fit as fleas at present and Soliloquy looked extremely progressive at the Craven Meeting I backed both herself and Altyn Orda and did feel that Altyn Orda spoilt her chances by being too fizzy in the preliminaries, if she could come to the party without all that then she has a chance to reverse placings with Soliloquy, remembering that Sky Lantern only ran 4th in the Nell Gwynn being in need of that race and went on to win the Guineas, the jury is out on that one.
Laurens is an exciting prospect and I think she is the one to beat and looking forward to seeing her.
I’ve never been a fan of Saxon Warrior or Expert Eye just feel that he has never lived up to the hype around him so will be sticking with Elarqam for the Guineas, I went down to see his gallop down the Rowley Mile on the first day of the Craven Meeting and although we weren’t informed by Mark Johnston the names of the two horses that he galloped with I can confirm, as I was standing right by where they exited the course after the gallop, that both horses he worked with were blowing extremely hard and Elarqam was not, I really hope he comes home for Frankel and Attraction. I know Mark Johnston is hopeful although they feel he will go better at 1m2f but I always think the uphill finish takes care of that and he did all his best work up the hill when he won his 2nd start at HQ, I truly believe he will do it

Good luck Joni your off to a flyer whatever happens..

I so hope you are right with Elarqam Jac. I haven’t had a bet in the Guineas yet and am not sure I will but you can bet I will be cheering on Mark Johnston’s pride and joy! Unfortunately we are away that weekend so I will be reduced to watching it on my phone. After Veracious having her setback and September looking like she won’t run either I am not to sure about the 1,000 either! But Charlie’s horses will certainly run up to their best and have to go close.
Very excited to see Cracksman in action this weekend. It won’t be easy for him as he isn’t 100% fit apparently and comes up against Cloth Of Stars who ran so well in the Arc but I am hoping he will have the class to come out on top. Could be a massive year for him. Let’s hope so. xxx

April 29, 2018 at 09:44 #1352501The long-awaited return of Cracksman today and I fully expect to see him crush his field despite not being 100%. I think we will see this horse turn into a superstar this year now that he is fully mature. Very exciting!
I have one very short-priced bet today. First Eleven was kept in the Derby by John Gosden despite still being a maiden and he runs today in a handicap off a mark of 77! If a John Gosden son of Frankel entered in the Derby can’t win a handicap off 77 I should probably give up the game. He improved with each of his runs last year, showed he handles this ground and has been crying out for the longer trip. He should surely be odds on and is a confident selection.
£150 win First Eleven – 11-10 – Salisbury 3.05 lost

A disappointing run from First Eleven who, even though he was squeezed for room, looked like the only Derby he would be worthy of running in would be a Donkey one.
BUT…..
….who cares! A magnificent win for Cracksman who absolutely hacked up. He was extremely impressive and I would say he has improved again from last year. Watching him today, the thing that impressed me the most was that he didn’t hit his usual “flat-spot”. I worried last year that he would only be a Group 1 horse over a mile and a half and that his Champion win was exaggerated by the heavy ground making it more of a stamina test. After today I would even back him for the Lockinge!! For me it is not so much about the DISTANCE of the race as the PACE of the race. As long as they go a nice gallop he has that incredible stride that nothing else can live with. Frankie knows that he can set sail for home 3 furlongs out and he will power through the line. It is going to take a seriously good horse to beat him and surely there is only one candidate. The equally incredible Enable. A race between these two machines could well be the Race of the Century. Let’s just hope it happens…

May 1, 2018 at 21:43 #1352754Time for a Guineas bet. I wrote the following in the Big Races Discussion:
So I would rule out any outside the top 5 in the betting. From that point on the first I would rule out is Saxon Warrior. I don’t believe that the Racing Post Trophy was good 1m form. Both he and Roaring Lion will surely be better over further. If you want more evidence see The Royal Lodge where RL and Nelson finished upsides. Aiden didn’t even enter Nelson for the Guineas because he is not a miler – yet he almost beat RL over a mile who almost beat SW. I’d be amazed if SW wins this.
Of the other 4 any could win. Gustav Klint was always my idea of Aiden’s best Guineas hope but I missed any decent prices and couldn’t back him now. The Superlative performance was impressive but it wasn’t a great field and we don’t quite know what he beat last time. He will surely close and could easily win it but not for me at the prices.
Elarqaam is my heart pick and I would love nothing more than to see him romp home like mum and dad did. I will be shouting him on for Jac as well but I don’t think he’ll carry my money. Like Steve said, he is plenty short enough for a twice raced winner with something to prove form-wise.
So the two for me will probably be Masar and Expert Eye. I am sure that if Masar was trained by AOB he would be 6-4. I always liked him as a 2 year-old and he had very good form in a couple of races and genuine excuses for his poor runs at Del Mar and Meydan. He was always going to be a better 3 year-old and he was seriously impressive last time. You don’t win a Craven by 9 lengths without being half-decent and he has proven he is fit, handles the track, gets a mile well and has the best form this year by a country mile. His trainer couldn’t be in better form and he will surely run his race. I am certain he will finish in the 3 so 5-1 is decent value I think.
Expert Eye has so many “ifs” to answer but IF he answers them he could still be a decent price. The other day I watched his Goodwood win again and it really was jaw-dropping. He then had a setback and clearly wasn’t right at Newmarket. He ran ok at Newbury considering he was fizzed up and didn’t settle and was running on ground that would have been soft enough. Stoute’s horses have clearly needed their first starts and I think we will see a much better horse on Saturday. I am convinced he was the best horse in the Greenham and he will be suited by the likely fast pace (agree that US Navy will cut it out and try and set it up for his stablemates) and (hopefully) better ground. He has a very high cruising speed and I can see Andrea finding cover and delivering him late. I think you can still get 10’s. That would be a decent ew bet for me. Good luck all!!
PS – only Bet 365 are doing NRNB so I’ll take slightly skinnier prices today.
