I’m sure most will be delighted that their hard earned tax money goes towards giving ISIS recruits a podcast. This world is seriously going south.

Chezza lies closer to the Woke than Gammon end of the spectrum, but he’s never managed to summon so much as a milligram of sympathy for this person.

You can’t offer a free bet/Get Out Of Jail free card on joining a terrorist organisation, if you did you’d see hordes of rebellious teenagers having a crack at it.

    What exactly is a Podcast?

It’s just an audio programme Purwell, but something you listen to over the internet at a time that suits you rather than traditional scheduled radio output.

Thank you for that Marlingford – it sounds like something out of Day of the Triffids and more worrying still – something that might be able to breed.

I wanted to do a Podcast, but a combination of tightness with money and not being able to figure out how the free ones worked meant I just use my phone to make an audio recording and upload it to my Facebook racing page with a link to it on my Twitter.

I’m sure it’s all very Stone Age, but then so are so many Chezza projects!

She’s received a lot of press coverage and is now giving her side of the story. That’s the BBC providing balance isn’t it?

I get what you mean, Richard, but in this instance I think she’s already been given ample opportunity to give her side of the story.

As stated, I generally consider myself more Woke than Gammon, but she made a proactive decision to leave this country and join a Terrorist organisation.

That is something to be discouraging young people (or any people) from doing in the strongest possible terms.

The additional price people like her sometimes pay is not only being punished, but being made an example of.

“Do this and not only will the UK disown you, you will be made an example of to others” is clearly the message to anyone harbouring dissident feelings looking in.

Given we are talking about terrorism, in this particular instance, I don’t think it’s the wrong message to send.

My Dad once said they come down very hard on and imprison white collar workers who, at the end of an impeccable career, try to embezzle money just before retirement.

Otherwise it becomes a “free bet” on top of your pension, everyone would have a crack at it and some might get away with it.

I think it’s a similar principle here – as you know, I don’t like this government one bit, but there must be no question of anyone being able to proactively join an organisation like ISIS then retrospectively talk their way out of being culpable.

She’s had plenty of publicity already and I don’t think this is appropriate.

That said, I consider you among the fairest-minded on this great forum, so I am questioning myself even taking a contrary view on this one!

Just a bit of Devil’s Advocate to be honest, the point of which is to make people (including myself) think so I hope I have.

I would essentially regard joining a terrorist organisation as a ‘strict liability’ offence. Otherwise anyone could, as you say, give it a go and plead coercion or similar.

I too am actually very uneasy with what appears to be quite a major series and a lot of airtime being given. It would possibly be appropriate as part of a series providing wider context on both this incident and the issue in general.

I know there’s been enough about the BBC recently but it does I think illustrate the point that balance is difficult and is not as simple as giving everyone a platform.

And the context Richard if she was a righty, you would want her cancelled.

Can you elaborate please? I don’t know where her politics lie, please enlighten me if you do. I would assume she’s at a very extreme end of the spectrum given the organisation that she joined.

I’m not usually in the business of ‘cancelling’ people but exceptions can be made for members of terrorist organisations.

I have zero sympathy for Begum and, even if she was groomed, there is obviously something deeply flawed with her character.

However, I am uncomfortable with how the UK has made her stateless. It’s not as if she went to fight for a foreign state – ISIL is a terrorist organisation, not a nation. Making her stateless wrongly shifts the burden of dealing with her elsewhere in my view. She originated from the UK and should be the UK’s problem to deal with.

If you remember we felt jolly uncomfortable when she left Marlingford. I think the general consensus then her’s was a one way ticket.

Yes she has become someone else’s ‘problem’, but we have literally millions of others here who shouldn’t be here, so I wouldn’t lose any sleep.

GSP, I remember plenty of shock and disgust at the time of her departure. But there were many people hoping the three girls would see sense and come back quickly. Like any foreign national who is somewhere they shouldn’t be, she should be sent back to where she came from.

Where does that figure come from please?

Seems to be a number of sources Richard, at different times.

All of which are guessing for their own agenda.
