Where would one start? I’m thinking about a career change and the thought of doing something journalistic in horseracing appeals to me! Written a couple of sports articles online for websites in the past but never anything paid.

    Thanks in advance! Ben.

It’s something that’s been on my mind for a couple of years as well Ben and I’ve never thought to ask on here to be honest  Any feedback would be greatly appreciated here also.

On another note, if anyone from Coolmore’s reading this – Boz and I will also happily team up as a double-jockey-duo to ride Joseph’s rides if they continue to lose faith in him. Boz will commandeer the reigns to veer any fancy-Lantern types off course while I ensure we gain ourselves a fair few whip-bans on course to victory.

I’ll get wasting now then Ben as I can see my 15 stone frame getting us in trouble with the BHA and punters alike  Then again, we’d probably still ride more winners than Joseph!

Ben,perseverance, and some degree of talent, will be your best weapons – perseverance the most powerful. Few media outlets want to pay anyone these days, unless you have something exclusive.

Print media, as you’ll know, is on its way out, and almost anything a sports fan might want to read can be found online, free.

One of the oldest methods is probably still the best. Get into a newspaper at any level – teaboy if necessary. At least then you have the chance of building relationships/contacts. Unfortunately that USA euphemism ‘Intern’, has slowly swum the Atlantic and landed here, bringing with it long hours and no salary.

I saw the RP advertising for an intern a few weeks back; they didn’t publish the terms, but you can bet they don’t include a company Rolls and fat expense account.

    Good luck. You’ll need it

The problem with writing Professionally about Horse Racing is the need to be politically correct and anyone who dares write something

    suggestive

wont have a job the next day.Of course the Alastair Downs and Paul Haighs of this world are masters of creating a picture outline and letting us fill in the Colours.Anyone who has the ability to put pen to paper and capture an audience consistently is a rare attribute but to do that one has to push boundaries and that doesn’t wash with the Racing Heirachy who love to think the Racing Public are a herd of gullible Sheep being lead to their slaughter by the on-course Bookmakers.Admittedly the

    average Punter

knows very little about the goings on in order to get a horse to win a race and its not good PR to educate them as those involved in ‘The Sport of Kings’ know how fickle relationships within this great sport are and thats across the board. Its all about keeping the balance right,we can all write about ‘useless’ Jockeys,Female Jockeys and Amateur Jockeys as they are prime targets for abuse and occasionally they deserve it as do Stewards for their decisions but that would soon become boring.Originality in any walk of life is recognised and Racing offers the Writer that subject matter, its how you decipher all the ‘Codes’ the ‘Kryptic clues’ and the ‘Characters’ in this play that will ultimately set those who can from who cant apart.Remember you capture the Publics imagination and you are half way there as they are what keep the wheels turning, without them there would be No Horse Racing even though we are looked down upon as a necessary evil  …..Good Luck Lads!

I’ve often been asked what I want to do when I finish college. Haven’t a clue. What do you love? Horse racing. Then get a job in horse racing.

Not that simple is it :?

Don’t think I’d be cut out for the journalism side of things, but I did an assignment on the importance of soil, and soil management, for the horse racing industry for one of my modules this year and that is a field I would definitely consider exploring further if given the chance.

Is Lekha still a THF member (Sulekha Varma)? I’d imagine a Clerk Of The Course might be able to give you a few tips on how to get in to soil/turf husbandary THM.

This might be of interest. The Racing Post tipster James Pyman has been having just been having a Q & A session on twitter. This was one of the questions asked.

    @

RacingPost #RPQA – how much opportunity is there for aspiring writers to make their way in racing and where should they start?

    This was his answer.

Write a blog, send us the link and I’ll give it a read. Keep checking our jobs section for opportunities. Keep practising, good luck #RPQA

There should be a job for stable jockey at O’Briens.

How many horses is JOB going to unbalance ? Any jockey would ride winners for that stable but i think he’s now very much more a hindrance than a help.

Had a spare half hour before work so decided to write my first mini-article on horse racing, haven’t got a blog or anything set up yet so I’ll just copy and paste it, didn’t take a whole load of time on it so don’t expect anything too great – would love to hear your opinions and please don’t be afraid to say it’s sh*t!

    The Jumps Draw Near

It seems like just yesturday that we heard that famous roar, witnessed a gold cup won through attrition and were stunned by the spectacle that is Sprinter Sacre; ‘twelve months to go’ they said on Cheltenham closing day, the wait is now down to six.

The National Hunt season holds a grip over those who admire it like nothing else and what it is exactly that lures us into this ancient sport in the most modern of times is difficult to asses. Maybe it’s the determination scorching through McCoy’s face as he send for home, maybe it’s the thrill of watching such animals battle as though their lives depend on it or maybe it’s the thought of your pockets being fulled by that emphatic long-priced winner that only you could find. Regardless of what brought us here, come November, we will be fixated.

There really isn’t anything else like it, dozens of the most highly-trained, highly-skilled and high-jumping horses take each other on from pillar to post in races that can lead you to the most varied of emotions, from shouting at your television in despair to jumping up and down from joy. The moment you see your horse take off for the final flight and land itself solely in the lead to be pushed out for that final furlong; the feeling is unrivalled.

Let’s not kid ourselves, horse racing hasn’t had the easiest of times over the past few months with all sorts of allegations and convictions being thrown around. However we musn’t let this blur our vision of the genuinity behind those who really care about the sport. From the champion trainer Nicky Henderson who’s stable is full of stars to the stablelads who go unnoticed by the average punter and have been up for hours by the time our alarms ring and we roll out of bed.

It is a sport that has kept us coming back for centuries and for this year, the wait is nearly over.
