October 31, 2011 at 18:29 #375222Hopefully Quito De La Roque will take his chance, really looking forward to his re-appearance, in what should be a big season for him. Confident he can go close.
Also looking forward to seeing Midnight Chase out again, a real old fave, hopefully he’ll also put up a good show. Might struggle this season with his increased mark, but I’d love to see him run well in both this, and future races. Got a feeling he’ll be primed for this especially, and if anyone beats Quito, I hope it’s him. Would be a welcome forecast.
Whatever happens, it’s got a nice look to it at the 5-day stage, small but select field. Certainly enough dangers for the 2 above anyway, but I’ve taken 7’s for Quito anyway
October 31, 2011 at 23:51 #375274Really like Rubi Light for this but he first quoted prices by Boylesports are a joke, don’t have one horse under or on my own price line.
Looks a cracking renewal though, Quito De La Roque is very exciting
November 1, 2011 at 04:06 #375293Surely de Bromhead isn’t going to put Sizing Europe through another season of confusion and hard races.
Got me scratching my head wondering what he’s playing at. Maybe he watching Champions Sea Buscuit and Secretriat before he goes to bed at night.
I regard it as almost abusive to be running such a good 2 miler over 3 miles and would move him straight to Paul Nichols if he were mine.
It’s not like the race is worth a fortune and there must surely be a couple of good prizes he could go for at his best trip without running him outside his comfort zone?
November 1, 2011 at 11:46 #375349de Bromhead is no fool. He knows the horse’s limitations as regards trip but Potts is obsessed with having a Gold Cup horse.
He is too important an owner for de Bromhead
to be falling out with.November 1, 2011 at 15:55 #375396Owner may want him running over silly trips, not the trainer?
Very sweet on Quito de la Roque.
November 1, 2011 at 16:00 #375402I’d have thought the Gigginstown horses will split surely? What do you think IC? Roi Du Mee to run in the 2 1/2??
See Kauto Stone is engaged for that race also.
How soft is the ground likely to get Saturday? More rain the better for The Nightingale

to be falling out with.I wondered why? thanks for explaining I always got the impression he was a very good trainer but this had me scratching my head.
The owner is Potty, that explains everything
November 4, 2011 at 11:33 #375941(2:20) 290D JNwine.com Champion S’chase
(Grade 1) €84,000.00 ( 3m – 5yo+ )1 Bostons Angel(152) (MrsJHarrington) – RMPower 11,10

7 The Nightingale (FR)(167) (PNicholls (in GB)) – NDFehily 11,10November 4, 2011 at 20:11 #376029Some race in prospect here, a pity there’s only seven runners though. Quality rather than quantity it would seem.
BOSTONS ANGEL: a thoroughly likable sort who refuses to go down without a fight. His chase wins include three Grade 1’s and an easy win over the smart Royal De La Thinte. He’s as game as a pebble, as seen when fending off all comers in the RSA last year at Cheltenham. In one meeting with Quito De La Roque, he won by a fast diminishing 3/4 of a length. He always pulls out more when something comes to him though, so who knows what would have happened had Quito got to him. Western Charmer was third that day and in one other meeting with that horse Bostons beat him by over thirty lengths but Western Charmer’s run seemed too bad to be true that day. Quito De La Roque faced that rival twice since the Fort Leney, slamming him twice by 14 lengths. Take from that what you will. Jessica Harrington’s horses seem to be needing the run, and Bostons Angel has himself needed his seasonal debut to blow away the cobwebs so it’s likely he’ll improve from tomorrow’s outing. Still a major player though. ****
COOLCASHIN: Good stayer on his day, and only finished a couple of lengths behind Sizing Europe last time out, although it seemed a case of Rubi Light first the rest nowhere until that horse fell at the last obstacle. This should be too hot for him. *
MIDNIGHT CHASE: Ran up a hat trick of wins in handicap chases at Cheltenham last year, before running a good fifth in the Gold Cup. A far better chaser than he ever was a hurdler, he hacked up on his first start last season so fitness shouldn’t be a problem. However, I for one don’t think the form of last year’s Gold Cup is anything special in the context of this race, and think the likes of What A Friend would struggle. Therefore I’m not backing a horse who finished eight lengths behind him in the Gold Cup. ***
QUITO DE LA ROQUE: Wasn’t much between this fella and Bostons Angel last season, but I think Quito was a shade unlucky the day he was beaten in the Fort Leney. He lost a fair bit of momentum when he hit one down the back straight and struggled to make the ground up thereafter. When they met the rising ground he was finishing faster than anything and there would have been nothing between them in another fifty yards. He again made a couple of awful mistakes at Aintree but found making the ground up a lot easier on the better ground to even defy slipping on landing over the second last to win a shade cosily imo. Like Bostons Angel, he’s as tough as they come, emphasized by his win in a handicap hurdle at Fairyhouse two seasons ago when everything else was crying no more. I’ve just taken the 25/1 for the Gold Cup, and imo he’s the one to beat. *****
RARE BOB: Grade 1 winning novice chaser but hasn’t really made the grade at the top level since. A big staying handicap might be more within his compass, but he would have place prospects on a going day. Whether that’ll be tomorrow is anyone’s guess. **
SIZING EUROPE: Second in this race last year behind the mighty Kauto, he then reverted back to two miles and took the Champion Chase at Cheltenham. Connections seem intent on making a Gold Cup horse out of him, but it’s hard to see him even lining up in that, given how he won the Queen Mother last year. He looked well beaten when left infront last time out but he will surely have come on a lot for that run. A reproduction of last year’s effort would probably see him go close. Undoubtedly has the class but still question marks over his stamina. ****
THE NIGHTINGALE: Won the Ladbrokes.com Chase on the same card last year when hosing up from the decent Roberto Goldback. Nicholls has targeted this meeting in recent years and I’d say The Nightingale will be straight enough for this. He handles soft ground but has doubts surrounding his stamina given the speed he has shown over 2m4f in the past. If it turns into a log others will out battle him imo. ***

It seems the man on Oddschecker has given them all the exact same star ratings! Hand me a job
November 4, 2011 at 21:52 #376042Good write up thm, hoping qdlr can do the business, he’s rapidly developing into
my favourite chaser and he’ll be carrying my money tomorrow.November 4, 2011 at 23:53 #376053This is how I see it:
Want to be against both Boston Angel and Sizing Europe. Not saying they won’t win, just poor value. Former has obvious qualities, genuine and consistent battler. But RSA didn’t take much winning this year, with Time For Rupert ill. Four horses finishing within 1 1/4 lengths, had Boston Angel been third or fourth there (just a pound or two worse on form) he’d be a far greater price here.
Sizing Europe seems a Spring Horse these days and lucky winner last time out when Rubi Light fell. Didn’t need to be anywhere near his best to beat Coolcashin (who’s again outclassed here). Although stays three miles is probably best at two. Soft ground will place even more emphasis on stamina.
The more it rains the better for
Midnight Chase
. Although record suggests he’s best on good-soft or a sound surface, I believe he’ll need an emphasis on stamina to beat this quality field. Progressive form up until the Gold Cup. Neil Mullholland’s front runner should run well and 6/1 looks reasonable value if fit, worth a saver.
Quito De La Roque looks the most likely of these to develop in to a Gold Cup contender. Still developing in to his frame. Stays very well and it’s good there’s a staying front runner in there to make it a test. Also a good sign of fitness that connections chose this instead of an easier option on the card. Although beaten by Boston Angel has improved since, winnng at both Aintree (despite stumbling badly) and Punchestown. Looks excellent value at around 3/1, main bet.
Rare Bob isn’t far behind most of these on form, but is more exposed and it would be disappointing as a race if he were good enough to win. Another likely to be somewhere near the front early.
The Nightingale
is interesting, hasn’t run since pulled up in the King George from a reported heart problem. Normally that would be a big concern, but won on this card on previous start and goes extremely well fresh. One possible negative is distance, yet to prove he stays 3 miles. But wasn’t stopping when winning at 2m4f and is by Cadoudal, sire of both last year’s Gold Cup and Stayers Hurdle winners. Stable in good form. 5/1 is too big and warrents a saver.
My 100% book for soft ground:
9/4 Quito De La Roque, 4/1 The Nightingale, 5/1 Midnight Chase
, 11/2 Boston Angel, Sizing Europe 6/1, Rare Bob 28/1, Coolcashin 132/1.
Value Is EverythingNovember 4, 2011 at 23:57 #376055Quito De la Roque looks very special, providing it doesn’t go too heavy, he should prevail. Heavy ground could enhance The Nightingale’s chances.
November 5, 2011 at 00:03 #376057Would think soft should be best for The Nightingale JJM, heavy might put too much emphasis on stamina.
Value Is EverythingNovember 5, 2011 at 00:20 #376062Heavy ground wouldn’t damage Quito’s chance at all I would have thought. I know you don’t want a slog that’ll take a lot out of your horse first time out, but he’d handle it better than most, if not all the rest.
November 5, 2011 at 03:48 #376080Winning a race like this at this time of the season is very often more down to grit and determination than it is class.
The reason being, very few are tuned to the minute as it’s along season.
Boston Angels fits the bill if Jessica Harrington has him forward enough. In the past he’s needed his first run but he’s improved stones since then so I’m putting it down to her bringing the horse along slowly.
I just wish you were my bookie Ginger 11/2? You say if he was 3rd or 4th he’d be a much greater price. If Frankel had finished last in the Guineas he’d have been a bigger price next time as well
Totally illogical statement to make. Don’t ever take up bookmaking

Wherever Boston Angel finishes you’d expect Quito De La Roque to be close by and the 2 could easily fight out another finish. I slightly prefer the former at this time of the season.
People tend to automatically say a race was poor quality when the hot pot runs below par but that for me wasn’t the case in the RSA.
The first 4 are all great prospects in their own right having won grade 1 and grade 2 chases, all ran excellent races on the day the form was almost copybook.
The Nightingale on soft ground over this trip I’d lay all day. In fact I’d lay him all day in any race. Don’t like the horse at all.
No doubt Sizing Europe will be there for a long way and could actually never be out of cruise control and win but I doubt if he’ll be cruising long enough with Midnight Chase in the race.
I don’t know why Midnight Chase was withdrawn at Wetherby and ended up here but here he is and he must be taken seriously.
He won’t mind the ground and he’s sure to have half of these at it by half way.
I think he’ll go very well here but may be worn down by Boston Angel but tbh I can’t split them.
