Hmm. Very disappointing debut. Travelled the best I thought till 2 1/2 out but found nothing.

    Anything remotely positive?<br>

Should come on for the run, Frankie didn’t knock him about.

Seemed not to like the ground?

Well he could have not liked the ground, like Sander Camillo, and then come on for the ground.

Or he could be like Pescatorio, having attracted so much hype and support over the winter (I fell for the hype myself), and then be a flop.

It’s not hype though, it’s money. Didn’t Magnier bid for this up to £5 million then back down? Surprised you haven’t brought that up jack.

What, so the horse was just sitting in the box for 13 months until this race? Every trainer has different techniques. Personally, i think Bin Suroor’s techniques are questionable. At the end of the day, Magnier didn’t buy Jalil. Sheikh Mohammed did.

    And doesn’t money equal hype?

Money can mean that hype becomes a prerogative but I don’t think anyone can be accusing them of over-hyping this particular beast.

At least he’s run. Still waiting for The Green Monkey.

Good points from both Corm and Gareth.

Godolphin haven’t hyped this horse, if people have huge expectations of him and are let down it’s down to them alone.

The money paid for this horse, relative to Sheikh Mohammeds personal wealth, isn’t really an issue. Possibly the feud between the two camps at the time and the one-upmanship in the sales ring was more significant.

And as for The Green Monkey, who knows what to expect?

The only thing that surprised me about Jalil is that he was put into training in this country instead of in America.

I didnt think that Jalil looked like a good bet and done the ed dunlop horse at 40/1 e/w (3rd), at the end of the day if a son of storm cat (bought for his early physical progression)  was any good as a race horse he would have been out earlier in the season and at 6f, probably moving up to 7f. For a storm cat to miss almost the whole 2yo season and debut over a mile at the end (a speed horse in a race where he will get no sort of speed training), is an act of desperation for a horse that has questions.

I was just looking for something that was nicely bred that would like the trip and possibly win at a good price, although the gallops reports from newmarket threw me a bit with jalil.

In truth though it looks like 9.7 million down the pan for sheikh CANT BUY (good horses) / WONT BUY (coolmore).

Huge, backward beast, didn’t have a clue today. In theory should make a better three-year-old but I wouldn’t hold my breath. Would be no surprise if he jetted out to Dubai (otherwise known as the alternative Bermuda Triangle) and disappeared off the face of the earth.

Wouldn’t be the first time HJ.

I remember the fuss when he paid a high price for a colt at Newmarket some years ago now, eventually named Abshurr, equally late to debut and equally disappointing before, as you say, departing for Dubai and doing sod all there as well, never to return.

Interesting point however about Sheikh Mohammed being unable to buy good horses, Bulwark.

Given that Magnier was willing to go to $5million, obviously both were very keen for the horse.

Would Magnier have had him in training in America, and would either their trainers there or Ballydoyle do better? Makes you think…well it does me anyway :)

I would think next year was the important time for this horse and they thought it beneficial to get some experience into him this year, I didn’t see any act of desperation in Frankie’s riding, why would there be? 9.7 million to them is probably equivalent to us having a quid on the lottery.

Better next year? Ive read that a few times today, even with his dam side, he’s a storm cat colt, if anything most storm cats are great at 2 and fail to train on at 3, not suddenly find loads at 3 after being rubbish at 2.

That was an act of desperation, almost any decent storm cat (o’brien has had loads, as has Bin Suroor so they know) debuts at six furlongs and go on to race between 6f and 1m2f, look at Brave tin soldier, Naigani, hurricane cat, cougar cat, emerald cat, indigo cat, dark cheetah, art museum, Giants Causeway etc, what experience will it give him to run in a race with the least possible pace and slowest horses, 1 mile maidens at this stage of the season are not the greatest places to look for next years greats as there is niether the pace for a standard decent 3yo race, nor the final speed, the horse will have gained nothing from today, and on the basis that Bin Suroor knows better that was just a shot in the dark with 9.7 million worth of carthorse.

The fact that a son of Storm Cat is given his first run as a 2-y-o in a mile race on easy ground suggests he’s got a touch of the slows.

Of course, it’s not Jalil’s fault he cost so much, it just shows that Sheikh Mo’s got more money than he knows what to do with.

It wasn’t great was it?! But not that bad either. He travelled ok, was green and a bit outpaced and then ran on again towards the death. Interestingly his full brother finished a 39 length last on his only try on a soft surface.

    From the RP website:

Saeed Bin Suroor, said: “We are disappointed about his run but Frankie likes him and he will improve for the race. He’s always shown us something in the mornings but we see him more as a three-year old type.â€ÂÂ

It would be folly to assume that is as good as he is. Although not a gambling yard, the market doesn’t usually get it far wrong with Godolphin runners so it could still prove significant that he was sent off odds on, especially when you consider the fashion that Truly Royal won in the previous day. The fact that horse started bigger than Jalil suggests Jalil has shown them more than that one at home.
