although the likes of Enable and a few superstars have strutted their hoofs on these surfaces

I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains
I've walked and I crawled on six crooked highwaysDecember 16, 2022 at 16:44 #1627031Or how about the good old-fashioned USA term: “Dirt?”
AW/synthetic surfaces are plastic and rubber and various add-ins, dirt is…dirt. Synthetic plays more like turf. They should all hold up to extreme cold though.
Turfway’s Tapeta at least seems to live up to the all-weather name https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mImPX_XcUDE
Woodbine had a rare cancellation yesterday due to heavy snow. The all-weather track itself was probably fine but if the roads in the area are too dangerous to drive on there’s not much they can do.
December 17, 2022 at 06:21 #1627108Currently (6.20am) minus EIGHT at both Lingfield Park and Chelmsford City.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"December 17, 2022 at 07:17 #1627111The good news is it’s now “only” minus seven at Chelmsford City and a “mere” minus six at Lingfield Park.
The possibly less good news is the latter inspect in 15 minutes and the Essex venue take a look at 8.30am.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"December 17, 2022 at 08:35 #1627118Unsurprisingly, Lingfield looking again at 9.30am.
There is a frozen area on the racing line.
It’s still minus four and won’t hit two degrees until 11am.
A third inspection after the 9.30am one wouldn’t shock me either – they’ll give it every chance.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"December 17, 2022 at 13:37 #1627151I think we just need to accept at times the weather will defeat everything that racecourses do to keep racing going. Just not meant to be. Was watching the robbo documentary about Bryan Robson and in his time at wba they led the div1 at new year only for the football to be off for 6 weeks due to it being below freezing for all that time. Remember it well. Nothing we can do about it. I was in aviemore more than a decade ago and it dropped to -18.
Surely it’s pointless racing when the weather is so bitterly cold. Gets milder now so no issues till boxing day it looks like when heavy snow could happen apparently. King George possibly in doubt then.December 17, 2022 at 13:50 #1627153Where’s global warming when you want it?
December 17, 2022 at 13:57 #1627154So I was delighted that annoying dettori is going to retire until I realise ITV will have him on the presenter list all summer

Why are they racing at Chantilly today when it was minus 6 last night and minus 2 still after the first race?
Questions need to be asked.
France One England nil.
Again.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"December 17, 2022 at 15:02 #1627161-9C at Chelmsford last night and still -5C at 6am so not really surprising but Lingfield was extremely marginal as the issue was the kickback containing little frozen clumps of Polytrack and that was deemed too much of a safety issue for both horse and jockey for racing to go ahead.
I do wonder whether this series of events is a wake up call for more work/investigation/communication regarding the surface with various other tracks here and in other jurisdictions that deal with similar (or even colder) conditions and are still able to race.
In any case, lets just hope this cold weather exits stage left quick smart so that the Festive programme isn’t affected in the same way as the last 10 days of racing has been.
December 17, 2022 at 22:27 #1627188French racing is funded from a Pari-Mutuel monopoly and, while I’d hate that as a punter, when I watch French racing visually I get the impression money is no object for anything.
French Jump racing looks like some sort of utopia/nirvana, staged on pristine circuits, beautifully landscaped and painted.
I wouldn’t mind betting their artificial Flat racing surfaces are no expense spared either.
What have we got?
A load of rundown tracks, many owned by ARC, churning out racing as cheaply as possible.
Temperatures at Chantilly were similar to those at Lingfield – they raced, we didn’t.
Draw your own conclusions.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"December 18, 2022 at 03:46 #1627191If they couldn’t race in sub-freezing temps there would be no winter horse racing in the midwest and northeastern US and all of Canada. As I type this the Standardbreds are racing at Century Mile in Edmonton, Alberta while it’s -19C with flurries. Harness people up north don’t clip their horses so the horses get adorably fuzzy and don’t seem too bothered by the cold.
December 18, 2022 at 06:36 #1627193That’s fascinating, Miss Woodford, thanks for that.
Questions really do need to be asked over here as this won’t be the last time we get this sort of weather.
