“Loved it when Eve-Johnston Houghton let out the b@ll@cks word in her interview and Oly Bell had to apologise on her behalf. Half their viewers were on mute and didn’t even hear it”

And they wouldn’t have heard Mayor referring to Eve JH as “the lady in the hat” either. Jeez, even I recognised her as the trainer of the winner and I’m not employed as a so-called expert.

I didn’t hear that either ha ha 🤣😅
Maybe some of that cooling down water should have come Mayors way courtesy of EJH.

Almost as bad as the Guard at The Royal Windsor Horse Show back in the 90’s mistaking The Queen, wearing her customary headscarf, for some ‘random old biddy’ and saying to her
‘Sorry love you can’t come in without a sticker’
to which she calmly replied ..
    ‘I think you’ll find that I can’

As much as I dislike Nicholas Witchel just don’t let Leona apply for Royal Correspondent.

Leonna didn’t have the best of days. When previewing the Great St Wilfrid she stated that the race was a bad one for favs and came up with the enlightening stat that during her lifetime only 7 favs had won the race.
Given that she’s about 31 how many was she expecting to have won the race?

Quite what relevance her age had to any stat is a mystery but 2 successive favs having won the race just before she was born may have been a factor. In any event the 7 winning favs in her lifetime would have produced vitually no loss/profit to a level stake.

This isn’t an isolated case and isn’t there anyone on the ITV racing team with enough intelligence to rubbish these “stats” and stop them being broadcast and insulting the viewers intelligence?

Any pundit who uses the expression “during my lifetime” is giving me the conceited impression they don’t think anything that happened before they were born matters and they certainly can’t be bothered to research it.

Might be a bitter pill for some to swallow, but the downside to being young is some older people might just know more than you, so best get your finger out and do your homework properly before you go on air.

That said, I’ve never minded racing pundits talking rubbish.

    1. I can’t hear it as I mute it all.

    2. I don’t want lazy punter viewers being spoon fed accurate useful stats as that affects the market I bet into, so the more misleading nonsense the better.

I have not seen Leonna Mayor on ITV but I have seen her on SSR. She is usually OK. But let’s be realistic. The reason two broadcasters have hired her is not primarily for her analytical skills.

“Any pundit who uses the expression “during my lifetime” is giving me the conceited impression they don’t think anything that happened before they were born matters.”

It is the same as youngsters who appear as contestants on television quiz shows and when they are asked a question from something that happened 30 years ago reply “I don’t know, it was before my time.”

Aside from their annoying belief that the world only became an interesting place after they were born, is it really unreasonable to be asked questions on a range of subjects and time periods on a quiz show?

Alexander Armstrong and Richard Osman on “Pointless” give out metaphorical yellow cards to any contestant on “Pointless” who tries that excuse.

I’ve in recent years become saddened a bit by the dawning realisation that few have the respect for history I did when I got into racing.

I wasn’t born when horses like Abernant, Tudor Minstrel and Ribot were around and was too young to be aware of Sea Bird, Brigadier Gerard and Mill Reef.

Ditto Arkle, Flyingbolt and Persian War over Jumps.

But I made it my business to know what they’d achieved as I realised they set the benchmark for true greatness.

I hadn’t actually expected to see “the best horse ever” in my lifetime until Frankel came along and that made it all the more special and I saw him race three times, winning the QEII, Lockinge and Champion Stakes.

Today’s lazy, self entitled, broadcast media pundit actually has the temerity to think a horse could as good as the best horse EVER a mere ten years later just because it’s won mostly the same races, although by more slender margins.

    It’s pathetic – they’re pathetic.

I hate to crab a really nice horse, but what has Baaeed beaten?

His OR is still lower than Excelebration’s and, as for being a horse who never wins by far, he won a Group 3 by half the track at Goodwood last year ffs.

He’s not winning Group 1s by Frankelesque margins because he’s not good enough to – simple as.

The fact is the racing broadcast media is largely populated by people who know less than many on this forum, but labour under the delusion they know more.

More than a gerbil – perhaps! – but not more than anyone with a true grasp on the game.

ITV Racing was what the mute button was invented for.

To be honest, lots of sports are the same; we’re incredibly lucky the GOATs (‘Greatest of all time’) are all around in 2022……. Nah, not having it. Everything/everybody is massively over rated, as that sells their coverage.

ITV Racing like to ‘big’ certain horses up, it may get them so more viewers!
Chamberlain is the worst, I bet he says to his kids every 1st of the month only so many months to advent calendar!

Despite a few things said that has been picked up on here, overall not too bad for a three hour live programme. Didn’t need the Irish voices today either so it felt like racing was occurring in this country and not Leopardstown or the Curragh for a change.

Great posts above, wish one of the ITV team would come on here to answer a few of our concerns about the presentation. You could give them a better grilling than Andrew Neil would give Liz Truss if she ever agreed to appear on his show.

    @Gladiateur

Never heard that story about the Queen before, Jac. 😂

I was watching All The Queens Horses on Channel 5 Gladders when I heard that story, I rolled up laughing. It’s a two parter and focuses on the Queen’s obsession with racing and all things horsey since she was a child to present day. It’s a lovely insight into her world.
I think it is still available on My 5.
    Worth a watch. :good:

The pundits offer nothing at all and the bias they have for certain horses/trainers is infuriating. Just talk and discuss the horses and their form. They tried to make this a godolphin v coolmore smash up with a wee bit of gosden thrown in. Just nonsense as all having poor seasons. Its all about the horses you dummies. That why were watching. Imho of course.

    “Chapman’s ” maximum 10 runners in a handicap ” was bizarre”

Wasn’t it though? Been playing on my mind ever since. In that respect, possibly the most interesting thing he’s ever said (which doesn’t mean he’s right)

    “our concerns about the presentation”

Tbh, Jac, I’m not actually concerned.

I’m aware it’s not being pitched at a 59yo bloke who’s worked in and around the industry all his adult life, isn’t a people person and is just interested in the betting and the actual racing.

The mute button will once again be my friend over the next four days!

Already seen one of their beloved montages comparing Baeed with Frankel on RTV. ITV are sure to base their whole show around it.

I really wish Ian that I could speak to someone at ITV and ask could they give us the option of 2 screens via the green button, as BBC do with Wimbledon. The green option being dedicated to seeing every horse parade in the ring and go to post with no sound required.
Could it be that difficult to action?
I guess today all the focus will be on Baaeed whereas I’d like to focus on Native Trail as the horse most likely to give him something to think about..
