thanks to everyone for all the BBC memories.
I knew it was all downhill once they put the insidious Balding in front of the cameras …
I can still hear it echoing in my head from the 2012 Derby ….Balding going on about “my brothers horse”
She said it so many times I’m surprised there were still anybody tuned in ……. this is when my love affair with the mute button began.
Thankfully not run into that woman during the games!
good luck to allAugust 8, 2022 at 14:15 #1610461First, I have absolutely no problem with the Irish but how many are on there Walsh, McCoy, Fitzgerald, other commentators. Many of the interviews are with the Irish as well.
Again no problem with hearing the accent but I often think have I tuned into racing at the Curragh or Leopardstown.
On a previous page where commentators and presenters chemistry mostly worked, O’Sullevan, Wilson, Pitman, etc.
All english voices. If ‘felt right’, and a bit of identity of the land we were in.ITV racing just flood the programme with people, who help them out with the 3 hours or so they have to fill with.
Granted the Irish are very successful, but appears they think the public just want to hear only their view rather than a cross section of people.August 8, 2022 at 14:22 #1610462The power in National Hunt racing has, shifted to Ireland. Most of the top jumps jockeys in this country are Irish. It is inevitable you are going to hear a lot of Irish voices. Not really sure why that is a problem?
August 8, 2022 at 14:32 #1610464I always preferred Channel 4 Racing (from mid-80s) over the BBC … when Brough Scott, John Oaksey, Derek Thompson and John Mccririck were in charge. Some fine memories attached to those days.
August 8, 2022 at 14:57 #1610468Agree with you ‘Ghost’, and add to that John Francome.
No problem CAS, I live in England so would like to hear english voices rather than what feels like racing from another country.
August 8, 2022 at 15:35 #1610473Despite my user name, I am English and live in England as well. But I have no problem with Irish people contributing to racing broadcasts.
As for “another country”: yes, 26 counties are not part of the United Kingdom. I have travelled around them a lot and I am aware of the differences between Britain and Ireland.
However, there is a common travel area; we share much in popular culture; and we have a shared history and language.
I realise some of that is problematic but we do still have a lot in common. Many Irish people live in Britain and many British people have Irish ancestry.
As such, I do not really see an Irish presence in a British sports broadcast as any sort of problem, especially when Ireland is strongly represented in the sport.
August 8, 2022 at 16:34 #1610486Never even crossed my mind.
A lot of the nurses that I see at UCLH are Irish, I keep promising to take them dancing without success so far!
I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains
I've walked and I crawled on six crooked highwaysAugust 8, 2022 at 16:54 #1610492It just comes down to people’s preferences CAS. The Irish are lovely people, I’ve got nothing against them except I prefer to hear english voices when racing is in England.
I have noted I have not quite been called a racist yet for having such preferences, in my own country.
August 8, 2022 at 17:39 #1610497I would not call you a curtain twitcher for airing those views GSP. Far from it and I can see where you are coming from, but I also agree with Corky.
The problem with the racing product is it has been changed too much over too short a time. Commercialized – I suppose – that was the goal! I think people just don’t like too much change too quickly. Having said that we cannot go back in time.
In short you are both right !
August 8, 2022 at 18:31 #1610506As was referred to by a poster on the thread yesterday, Hungerford week would usually coincide with O’Sullivan’s summer break and I will never forget how the standard presentation of the show slipped on the Friday Dalsaan and Swinburn were successful in the big race in 1981.
Tony Gubba was chosen to front the show and though I’m sure it was not the original plan, Ronnie Corbett stood beside him for a large portion of the programme, bringing out regular eruptions of laughter from Gubba. It left Walter looking genuinely embarrassed when he came into the box to be interviewed (by both of them!) after his winning ride. It made wonderful viewing though.
August 13, 2022 at 12:59 #1610913It’s muted (standard) but how many conversations can you have with casual racegoers before you run out of original questions?
Yes, I’m having a nice day, yes, the weather’s lovely, yes, I’m in pleasant surroundings, yes, it’s a great day out.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"August 13, 2022 at 14:11 #1610931Thankfully I can’t hear, but I’ve got a horrible feeling they’re talking about whether Baaeed might be as good as Frankel – AGAIN.
1. Frankel was the highest-rated Flat horse EVER – how likely do they think it is?
2. I’m not certain Baaeed would have even beaten Farhh and St Nicholas Abbey. Or Excelebration, come to that. And Cirrus Des Aigles would have Baaeed on (French) toast in the mud at 1m2f.

Blackbeard to conquer the World
August 13, 2022 at 16:22 #1610959I’m hoping it’s a change for the better but have racecourses finally stopped these idiots running out onto the track after the race ends to ‘interview’ the jockey?
I considered it dangerous to say the least so hopefully the authorities have seen the light and finally put it to an end.
(power to the mute button)
good luck to allAugust 13, 2022 at 18:36 #1610968I think it was only temporary because the horses were not going into the winners enclosure today BCK because of the extreme heat. So jockeys were made to walk the gauntlet followed by ‘Persad The Pest’ with his inane questions.
Loved it when Eve-Johnston Houghton let out the b@ll@cks word in her interview and Oly Bell had to apologise on her behalf. Half their viewers were on mute and didn’t even hear it..

If you mute the entire broadcast it’s actually often very good.
Hours upon hours of live racing on terrestrial in golden silence.
I look forward to not hearing a word any of them say at York from start to finish.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"August 13, 2022 at 21:42 #1610978Jason Weaver’s drivel about them having to build a net at York for Baaeed was particularly asinine as it followed immediately on from them showing that clip of Frankel’s International win when they had that inside camera shot of Queally sitting absolutely motionless on Frankel as he sauntered past SNA & Farrh and then proceeded to put 7L into them in less than 1F.
I do hope Shadwell is paying them a handsome finders fee for this PR blitz as you couldn’t say they are not giving it their all in promoting him.
