The Fielden always kicked off the Craven Meeting and was run on a Tuesday(not televised) followed by The Nell Gwynn on Wednesday and The Craven on Thursday.
What I can’t understand is WHY is the Craven Stakes the most prestigious race of the meeting being run on the Wednesday leaving the final day untelevised. Also they have messed around with the 2 day Guineas Meeting making it 3 days diluting the big races no doubt so they can have more cooperate entertaining over those days..
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...April 12, 2022 at 07:11 #1593153Jac- when I was growing up (in the 80s), the Guineas meeting was three days, with the 1,000 on Thursday, the Jockey Club Stakes on Friday (I remember the mighty Ardross winning that in 1982) and the 2,000 on the Saturday.
April 12, 2022 at 07:29 #15931551982 was the first Guineas meeting I attended (hitchhiked from Warwick university and basically roughed it, sleeping in launderettes).
On The House won the 1,000 on the Thursday, Ardross beat Glint Of Gold on the Friday and on the Saturday, after Nell Gwyn winner Chalon defied a penalty with Lester Piggott motionless throughout, in a 3yo Handicap, Zino won the 2,000 Guineas.
I met a Bruce Hobbs stable lad who gave me two tips, two winners (at 7/4 and 10/1) in the launderette!
Happy days – and, yes, happy THREE days.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"April 12, 2022 at 09:21 #1593164Fond memories of the Fielden. One of the first lucrative winners I backed was Lord of the Field in 1990, trained by James Toller and ridden by George Duffield (I think). I was made to sweat because he had to survive a lengthy stewards enquiry.
He was owned by the Duke of Devonshire and carried his straw colours. The second was owned by Lord Howard de Walden and carried his apricot silks. I remember thinking there was something quite pleasing about two sets of single coloured silks fighting out the finish.
Lord of the Field was subsequently troubled by injuries but he won a few Group races and he was third in the Irish Champion Stakes a few years later.
I always kept an eye on the Toller/Devonshire horses. They had some good ones. Compton Place, Duck Row etc.
April 12, 2022 at 10:08 #1593171Kalaglow won the 1981 Feilden and returned in 1982 to win the Earl Of Sefton over the same course and distance.
He was Group 1 on Good and quick ground, but a shadow of that with cut in the ground.
40 years on, what will thus year’s renewal bring?

Are any of today’s field likely to follow in his footsteps? Answers on a postcard to the usual address.
April 12, 2022 at 13:45 #1593215Somewhat unlikely, though I notice the Official Ratings have rather more respect for the ex-South African than the market does.

I think you’ve answered your own question tbh Jac.
These days there is not enough quality to warrant ITV giving Newmarket three days.
Suspect (if I were their boss) ITV gave Newmarket an ultimatum to put the best races on two days or lose the meeting entirely from ITV schedules.Value Is EverythingApril 12, 2022 at 16:17 #1593246Surely the Craven is being run on the Wednesday at the behest of ITV? I would have thought they only want to show 2 days.
Didn’t the Guineas meeting used to be Thursday to Saturday?

As for Ardross (loud wow) beating Glint Of Gold (quieter wow) in the Jockey Club Stakes at the Guineas Meeting I recall it being late off for some reason (loose horse?) and a split-second after they passed the line the ITV coverage ceased and adverts commenced
Strange what gets remembered. 40 years ago, crikey
April 12, 2022 at 19:19 #1593273It was probably late off because I was still finding the best possible vantage point in The Silver Ring.

No, I don’t think they did James.

And 5 Live had commentary as well; I recall listening in work to those races…..
April 15, 2022 at 12:50 #1593762Watched the Craven Stakes via a betting platform, heard Lydia Hislop asking Eddie Fremantle to review it afterwards.
Lasted about a minute – that was all I needed.
60 seconds of professional punter insight is worth a thousand hours of ITV Racing broadcast tbh.
