I’m with GT here. Hoiles is top banana in my book. Very interesting and intelligent contributer off commentary as well.

April 11, 2022 at 16:09 #1593045I think Peter Bromley is/was my favourite commentator. Great for the ears on radio because he always sounded so dramatic. His commentary on the 1981 Derby was brilliant.

I’m delighted for all three of you.
I, however, wouldn’t keep eating boiled eggs on the basis I might one day decide I like them after all, so I can live without the enthusiastic schoolboy.
I’d give Simon Holt the edge tbh, when I go racing at Brighton and hear him he has the rare commentator’s virtue of not getting on my nerves – in 2022 there is no greater compliment I can give.

100% – “You need a telescope to see the rest!”….”He’s climbed this mountain!”

Simon Holt gets the Silver Banana. “Denman is powering on, he hasn’t touched a twig!”

April 11, 2022 at 16:23 #1593055“Born to win The Derby! His day of destiny!” was IMO Holt’s finest hour.
Admittedly, having secured 8/1 ante-post renders me somewhat biased.
Didn’t actually hear it until I got home as I was there – trying not to listen to Holt!

April 11, 2022 at 16:36 #1593058TTC- surely it isn’t better than “Look at this star… It’s Bahhare”
(I’m being sarcastic, in case anyone can’t tell)

I prefer him off commentary. He does have some interesting insights. Can take him or leave him as a commentator.
April 11, 2022 at 16:39 #1593061Holts blatantly pre-planned and shoehorned in “…and its GORGEOUS George….” in George Washingtons Guineas gets the wooden spoon. Absolute cringe.

Bromley popped his cherry as a course commentator at Plumpton in 1955.
When a horse fell over in one of the ‘chases, he didn’t spurn the opportunity to utter the immortal line, ‘Atom Bomb has fallen’.

Haha I bet he was praying the horse would go down to get that one in.

April 11, 2022 at 16:59 #1593066Sorry, I always thought Bromley was a terrible commentator. One good line does not make him good.
Most commentators on the current rota are OK. Holt and Machin are the best. Thompson and Cattermole the worst.
Mark Johnson is OK but some of his melodramatic statements “Such a horse closes and TAKES DEAD AIM” are a bit irritating.
April 11, 2022 at 17:30 #1593073Grahame Goode was by no means my favourite but certainly added to one of the best races I’ve seen.
“it’s a three way photo in the Whitbread”!
Value Is EverythingApril 11, 2022 at 20:00 #1593085Ginge, that was a finish that didn’t need any commentary.
Still disappointed, nearly forty years later, that Diamond Edge got beaten.
April 11, 2022 at 23:32 #1593133Dissapointing to see the Fielden is on the (untelevised) Thursday of this meeting.
BUY THE SUN
April 11, 2022 at 23:42 #1593135Trying to spread the pattern-race love over all three days, I guess.
The Thursday would be a weak card without it.
Kalaglow and Golden Horn would be my all-time favourite winners of the race.
