“Obviously they are all equally precious to me, but the biggest PR disaster for racing today would be something happening to Snow Leopardess.”

Tom Stanley on RTV just asked Robert Waley-Cohen “How does it feel?”

10 out of 10 for originality, Tommy.

My decision to redeploy the mute button was obviously the right one, then.

Listening to Hoiles at the GN finish. Okay he has probably been told to inject a bit of passion at the end of a race, particularly a big one.

But all I heard was someone shouting at us, in our lounge like an assault, and I wanted to have a go back and tell the f….. to shut the f… up.

Sorry, he has great knowledge of the sport, but as a commentator and that voice, NO!!

The chemistry and connection of sound are not there.

tbh Nobody is perfect but I think Hoiles is the best commentator there’s ever been.

Arguing about commentators is like arguing over food – it’s purely down to personal taste.

For me, the late Peter O’Sullevan in his prime (1977 Red Rum/Sagaro) was the best ever by a distance, with Richard Hoiles a mere eternal overexcited schoolboy anorak by way of comparison, but there’s no right or wrong to it.

Yes, it’s all just opinion Ian.
O’Sullivan was – for me – way ahead of his time, much more ahead than Hoiles is in his era. Just that every other commentator in the 70’s and 80’s were pretty crap by comparison; so O’Sullivan simply stood out and we did not have us internet warriors complaining about every mistake. Where as today’s commentators are generally pretty good, some like Holt are excellent and Hoiles is imo the best of them. ie Looking back at O’Sullivan and comparing him with today’s commentators, he used to get things wrong and repeat words too.

O’Sullevan made loads of mistakes, even in his prime.

But for me great commentary is about theatre, as well as accuracy.

I was a particular O’Sullevan fan, and compiled a feature on IMO his greatest commentaries for The Independent when he retired.

Arkle’s first Cheltenham Gold Cup, Nijinsky’s King George, Allez France’s Arc, Sagaro’s third Gold Cup, Sea Pigeon’s first Champion Hurdle and, of course, Red Rum’s third Grand National, all delivered with a dramatic gravitas IMO none before or since could ever come close to.

But as we agree that’s just “IMO.”

Mike Cattermole has to be the worst. Good presenter but terrible commentator. I heard him calling a race at Exeter recently and he said something was travelling well when it was being hard ridden by the jockey.

I go by the sound of the voice, the velvet tones, the chemistry of sound with the race.

I can see what’s going on in the race with my own eyes and not interested if there has been a little peck on landing here or there, or if the horse has farted or not.

Hoiles is perfect for the visually impaired and hard of hearing. So much detail which is great for the former, and excited schoolboy shouting for the latter.

“But for me great commentary is about theatre, as well as accuracy”.

    ——————————-

As far as accuracy goes: According to one commentator I spoke to Hoiles has a photographic memory which is why he makes so few mistakes identifying horses.

But I totally agree Ian, theatre is the most important thing and that’s one reason I like Hoiles.
One thing that confuses me though…
How do you compare commentators if having it on mute anyway?

One man’s “detail” is another man’s “atmosphere” or “theatre” I guess, GSP.
imo It’s best for the commentator to say whenever he sees anything happening because truth is however good the punter’s sight is he / she will miss stuff. But yes, you’re right my eyesight isn’t as good as some and my hearing isn’t much better.

As ever, each to his own. :good:

Ginge: I went to the same school as Hoiles and I can assure you that he does not have a photographic memory.

Who makes up such drivel? 😂

I didn’t always have it on mute – it was the current generation of racing broadcast media who convinced me of the merits of silence.

Hoiles is “the current generation” that you have on mute. So you must only hear him very rarely Ian. That seems to me makes it difficult for you to compare.

Suspect there’s two types of photographic memory, some for everything and some people only with stuff they’re interested in, Glad.

    Simon Holt told me.
