Just some observations.
Whwn the 2:20 race was about to start Ed said let’s get Aintree 2017 underway, despite the fact that it was the second race.
The other one was when they entered the home straight in the Aintree hurdle, the commentator said “my tent or yours is about to enter unknown territory stamina wise”. Is that the same mtoy that came second in the same race last year?Basic and small errors but irritating nonetheless
April 6, 2017 at 15:42 #1295582I’m more concerned at the duff camera angle as the horses approach the last flight in both hurdles not to mention leaving the new one out of shot at the last.
April 6, 2017 at 15:52 #1295583They’ve just redeemed themselves with the Rummy feature.
April 6, 2017 at 15:52 #1295584Absolutely appauling camera work. Whoever is in charge should be sacked straight away. The angles coming to the last in the 3-25 a child could have done better. Thank God I have RUK. I for one will never tune in again

It was the first televised race being shown on ITV.
April 6, 2017 at 16:22 #1295594My god the camera work for the Foxhunters chase was dire almost as bad as the final flight in the hurdle races. Can only hope it’s better especially for the Grand National. Like Droffats I’m so glad I have Racing UK.
April 6, 2017 at 16:39 #1295597Apparently there were two fallers at Bechers, although we didn’t get to see them.
Why switch from the best camera angle as the leaders jump the fence, to the worst? Unless of course you’re trying to avoid having to show any fallers that may “upset” some people.
Really don’t understand why we can’t have the old camera positions looking back from Bechers and the Anchor Bridge crossing. Most viewers want to see where “their” horse is and these shots give the best angles to cover the whole field.
The unnecessary xx Fence of xx graphic also gets in the way.
....and you've got to look a long way back for anything else.

I completely agree. ITV have had a year to work out the best angle at Bechers but they still gave us three in the blink of an eye. Using C4’s camera on a zip wire at the chair meant we didn’t get a good view of On the Fringe’s mistake and the camera at Valentine’s is fine for after the race but we need to be able to see horses land.
I’m away to watch my recording of RUK to see how they fared.

Hear hear. The only fault with RUK was using the inside tracking camera at Becher’s, even on the replay they didn’t dwell long on the traditional shot. They are indeed frightened to cause “upset”. Was going to check a recording of ITV’s coverage of the race but won’t bother as it was clearly much worse.

I’ve just watched the RUK coverage and the replay used all the ITV camera angles. Hopefully on Saturday one of the channels will show the head on view from Bechers.
April 7, 2017 at 18:00 #1295800No chance of that – this would have been their dress rehearsal for camera shots.
April 7, 2017 at 19:12 #1295818Don’t think I’ve made any comments so far on this thread, and to be honest, I didn’t think ITV had been that bad.
However, and it’s a big however, the wheels seem to have come off at this meeting. The camera work has been appalling.
How difficult is it to choose a simple, traditional angle for the shots. It has to be a conscious decision by someone to decide “nah, we’ll use that fancy angle, these racing fans aren’t that bothered about seeing the action, I’ll continue to jump from shot to shot”. It drives me nuts, it really does, and there’s no excuse for it. The big hurdle yesterday, at some points it was if they had someone in on work experience. I despair.
I’ve used this analogy before, but it still rings true…………….it’s like Sky Sports showing the FA Cup Final, using a camera attached to the corner flag, instead of the traditional position from high in the grandstand. Football fans wouldn’t tolerate it, so why should we?
I can just picture the final pairing at The Masters on Sunday, it’s a tied game, and it’s down to the last Putt, but you’ll have to take our word for it, as we’re covering the action using a Camera stuck to the lip of a bunker, 150 yards back down the fairway.
And don’t get me started on those bloody aerial shots lol……………I’m sure it’ll be alright on the night though.
April 7, 2017 at 20:00 #1295825Yep- as being annoying at the time, if you want to watch a certain horse’s jumping and way of going for future reference it’s useless.
April 7, 2017 at 20:51 #1295834Just watched the tail end of the virtual Grand National on ITV4 which to me was a huge waste of time & question why they showed it at all. What surprised me hugely was having Nick Luck as the presenter, realise it’s highly unlikely but is he going to replace the dreadfully wooden Ed Chamberlain?
April 7, 2017 at 22:38 #1295863The fashion nonsense needs to go. Concentrate on the next race not some clown telling us who made this dress and those shoes etc
April 8, 2017 at 01:28 #1295904I think the ITV coverage has been pretty decent so far this year. However, the Aintree coverage has felt a bit of a step backwards.
Totally agree with all the comments about the poor camera angles during the racing. I want to see the whole field, especially when they are going over the obstacles. Also the content seems to have worsened; I can’t believe anyone would have been tuning in for Friday’s fashion segments which took up way too much time. By all means publicise the very decent “best dressed” prize and interview the winner, but leave it at that and no more. Also stop the obsession with winning connections becoming emotional during interviews. It’s great that people are so invested in the sport, but a tearful interviewee is rarely a coherent or interesting one.
A particular strength of the ITV coverage previously has been features, so it would have been nice to have a few more of these, especially as the National is not exactly short of angles to cover.
On a more positive note I really enjoyed the Virtual National on ITV4 on Friday night. It was a bit different, and at least they are trying to innovate. The graphics were really good and I found myself getting into it as if it was real!
April 8, 2017 at 12:25 #1296035I couldn’t see the point of doing a virtual version of what will actually happen in less than 24 hours time. The winner is probably wrong, the 1234 is almost certainly wrong.
Why not the best 40 previous national winners, maybe with Desert Orchid, Arkle, Kauto and Denman thrown in as well? May as well make it a fantasy if all that effort’s going in.
