It’s a shame they’re not covering the Dubai World Cup meeting rather than the not very interesting fare on offer at Newbury and Kelso.
Au contraire, good to see the NH action covered.
Anyway, ITV probably haven’t got the contractual rights to show the Dubai racing.
....and you've got to look a long way back for anything else.
March 25, 2017 at 19:07 #1294160Just spoke to my dad who lives in France so doesn’t get the satellite channels but does get C4 and ITV. He has been watching racing for 60 years! He loves the new coverage and rates it leagues ahead of C4. He likes the energy and the freshness. He had never heard of Matt Chapman but loves him! Interesting – perhaps we have all been spoilt by ATR and RUK.

Disagree big time.
I watched the entire ITV coverage just to escape the Dubai stuff which completely wrecked RUK’s coverage this afternoon.
March 26, 2017 at 00:35 #1294181It’s fantastic that they are giving such good coverage of meetings at places like Kelso and Uttoxeter.

With narrow-minded views like yours around, how can racing expect to be reach out to the outside world and get new fans?
You appear not to have noticed that the “Dubai stuff” was top class international sport.
Too many foreigners in it for you, perhaps.

It is racism is it? OK.
Racing UK is called Racing UK. For my subscription I expect comprehensive coverage of UK meetings that’s what I pay for. I don’t like the coverage diluted by showing overseas flat racing in the jumps season. It doesn’t float my boat.
The RUK subscription isn’t cheap and when I’m paying the sort of money that I am I want to see what I want to see.
The insinuations and the attitude I’ll leave to you.
March 26, 2017 at 13:19 #1294212There’s more to racing than top class international stuff. I’m sure that Joe Public, if they turn on their telly on a Saturday afternoon would rather hear about the sort of horses that they might possibly be involved with; nice stories about horses travelling with goats to keep them company and archive footage of racing. I do actually feel that I’m ‘there’ when I watch racing on the telly now..something that Ch4 had stopped doing.

Totally agree IB. I often sing the praises of RUK but it does let itself down by showing so much overseas Flat racing, a lot of which is on sand. Personally it would be preferable if it showed no Flat racing whatsoever lol but were I a Flat fan, on the other hand, having been teased all winter by incessant Dubai build up meetings I would be hopping mad that on the big day RUK could barely fit in recordings of Dubai due to its commitments to three UK Jumps cards. RUK need a separate stream for each code but that’s unrealistic to hope for.
March 26, 2017 at 13:52 #1294215RUK did once have a short-lived ‘RUK2’ international channel, primarily for racing from France and USA, if memory serves
FWIW I agree with the view that as a subscription service a lone RUK channel should prioritise what its members signed up for: racing in the UK, however run of the mill it might seem to some who’d rather be watching high-profile entertainment from elsewhere
However I must declare an interest: Kelso rocks my boat, Meydan doesn’t; and believe it or not I’m not racist

You can’t please all of the people all of the time; though I’m heartened to read the generally positive responses to ITV Racing, given the generally negative responses when it was announced that racing was moving home
How are the viewing figures doing?
March 27, 2017 at 00:25 #1294261Each to their own but I was quite happy for them not to be covering the none too edifying spectacle of Dubai. Presenters would have been running out of superlatives all afternoon Arrogate may be exceptional but is a US dirt horse and will not be seen over here. We`ve had plenty of sickening hyperbole surrounding horses like Animal Kingdom who then proceed to come 11th at Royal Ascot.
Much nicer to see some solid standard fare at Newbury
March 27, 2017 at 09:27 #1294272I’m afraid I’m another racist with no interest in any of the overseas action (Ireland excepted). I just don’t feel any social or historical connection to Meydan, Happy Valley, Kenilworth, Cagnes etc etc.
I also find it somewhat ironic that the channels who jemmy this unwanted (for me) stuff into the schedules are the same ones whose ‘experts’ reliably inform us that there’s too much racing for the rest of the year.

March 28, 2017 at 21:34 #1294445Astounded by some of the comments regarding RUK. Apalling that a racing channel have the temerity to show one of the top meetings of the year which included the second highest prize money race in the world and the best horse in training worldwide. A horse that is likely to go down as one of the best of all time.
Just because a channel is called Racing UK doesn’t mean it shouldn’t also show oveseas racing. And the argument about what the channel is called totally falls down when you consider a large number of the horses(and jockeys) were from the UK including the top rated British horse.
March 29, 2017 at 13:45 #1294492Inclined to agree with the above.
Even though you have to draw the line somewhere in your interest in horseracing,a major international meeting featuring horses and jockeys that are extremely well known in the UK seems like an odd point to do so.
Its the same kind of odd as people who follow club football but aren’t interested in the National team.I would understand the negativity more if it was about maybe the Dubai World Cup following on too soon after Cheltenham for some with no seasonal build up.
Linking the coverage of the event with the too much racing argument is just bizarre.
April 1, 2017 at 13:05 #1294900Really enjoyed the Morning Show this morning, thought Rishi Persad carried it through effortlessly and having Hayley Turner and Jason Weaver in the studio to give there thoughts and opinions was very interesting, I hope they will be a permanent fixture on the programme.
Loved the item about Balthazar King and lovely to see the old boy come back from his horrific fall in the 2015 Grand National being taken out for a gallop at his new home by Victoria Pendleton. Remember watching that race in local betting shop and walking out the moment Balthazar King fell as I thought he would never get up. Later to hear that he had a good chance of recovery felt as good as backing the winner

Looking forward to coverage this afternoon at the beginning of the flat season.
Their updates on injured horses and jockeys are quick and informative and it’s nice not to have interviews with bookies only looking to line their pockets with false favourites and steamers.I think it was Moe who said earlier on this Thread that you actually feel that you are there amongst the horses and are part of the on going action, really enjoying it now the creases are getting ironed out.

Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...April 1, 2017 at 19:00 #1294973Perhaps the British Broadcasting Corporation should only show programmes made in Britain then? I’ve never heard such tosh. There is a wonderful world of racing out there and the racing at Meydan was superb. I wonder what the jumps fans would say if they decided not to show the Punchestown festival because it is not from the UK? Sounds like we have a new movement brewing – Rexit!!!

April 6, 2017 at 12:56 #1295549It will be interesting to see which camera angles ITV use on the National course.
I’m guessing Hoiles and Johnston will be two of the commentators. I wonder who the third will be?
April 6, 2017 at 14:54 #1295566I heard somewhere that Ian Bartlett will be ITV’s third commentator for races over the National fences. That’s fine I like him though I know many don’t, besides ITV have deleted all references to Simon Holt showing replays of races that were shown on Channel 4.
