“John Berry when on the Sunday forum stated jockeys can only make minimal difference to horses chances.”

I do not entirely agree with Berry. I believe Danny Mullins made a huge difference to the outcome of the Stayers Hurdle. All of the leading players look much of a muchness. The difference was one of them got a great tactical ride and the others jockeys were caught napping.

I think he has more of a case over Derek Fox and Corrach Rambler. Fox deserved praise for his persistence but his horse was taken off its feet early and then just stayed on strongly. Not sure if Fox had a great deal to do with it, although it obviously looked spectacular.

Agree with CAS – Hell will freeze over before the opinion of anyone in racing “will do for me.”

I’m an independent free thinker – Danny Mullins rode them to sleep on the Stayers, same as Rachel Blackmore often does.

Was that what John Berry meant though, CAS?
Any jockey can ride a good race, but some are more consistent at it than others.

What I think John Berry means is: Generally – The form one jockey can get out of a horse with a good ride is minimal difference to the form any other jockey can get out of the same horse with a good ride. Pound or two; three a best and that’s for a McCoy or Walsh. If meaning it in that way then I agree with Berry.

ie In as much as what form rating a horse can run to, the jockey is generally perhaps the least important aspect of form study. However, how likely a horse is of running to that form is very important when assessing its chance. imo Generally it is consistency that counts. Good jockeys are just more inclined to get the best out of the horse.

That said, there are occasions when a jockey strikes up a particularly good rapport with an individual horse. In this respect temperament of the horse matters too.

Townend doesn’t seem to be that consistent to me, so isn’t a top jockey but neither is he a bad one.

Then again some eras have many top jockeys, this era has none imo.

I would however agree that Danny Mullins is better and should get more top rides.
This season he has two of the best in his King George and Stayers Hurdle victories.

Townends strike rate is no worse than ruby walsh used to be as mullins main jockey

In fact it’s arguably better since he became number one jockey when ruby retired in 2019

    32% 2019/2020
    34% 2020/21
    36% so far this season

Ruby was 29-31% generally other than one season at 35%

So describing townend as inconsistent is just plain wrong

Also worth noting you’d be losing a bloody fortune backing Rachel Blackmore blind

5/5 for the Mullins stable at Leopardstown so far. Other trainers must be wondering, what’s the point?

I try to ignore the trainer (and other connections) and focus on the horse – it makes it (a bit) more bearable.

I am going to do my little bit to temporarily stop the domination in the Beginners Chase tomorrow with Freedom to Dream. Some thoughts: http://www.cheltenhamdream.com/blog-diary/2022/12/27/can-freedom-to-dream-be-a-surprise-christmas-package

Enjoy your night out in Dublin and good luck tomorrow. Sam Ewing is a fine jockey.

I hadn’t even noticed he’s had five winners until busting the RP and SL websites – the domination IS tedious, but it can be ignored.

It’s not Blue Lord or Dysart Dynamo’s fault who trains and/or owns them – two exciting prospects in my book.

6/7 on the day whilst the other winner used to be trained by him.

@Bayoffreedom thank you for the heads up and enjoyed reading your blog.
I had a go on freedom to Dream and he was unlucky with the blunder at the fence and lost all momentum there. Plenty to build on for the rest of the season.
I also did the winning distance ( any runner) which covered the bet.
Quite right about I am maximus.

10 winners last year. Only 6 this year.

    He’s slipping. ;-)

18-10 to Ireland was a closer scoreline than many people were expecting.

I thought there was a good chance Ireland would have all 7 winners on St Patrick’s Day today – but Britain got 4.

When Lossiemouth landed my 4/1 ante-post bet in the Triumph Hurdle I wasn’t remotely bored.

At least he runs his good horses against each other.
