I know we are still in the post-coital glow of Cheltenham, but take out the Midlands National and today’s cards wouldn’t look out of place on a drab weekday.
Even with levy cuts and Chelters shadow surely race planners can do better then this as Channel 4 are still showing 6 races today.
Two words "Northern Racing" one of the leeches sucking the life out of British Racing!!!!

The Uttoxeter card was the subject of a thread last year:
(https://theracingforum.co.uk/horse-r … 81640.html
and you’re right to point it that’s it no better this year.
There’s actually a £250k Jackpot carryover to Uttoxeter today, but there’s no way I’m going to waste time and money on a card offering five handicaps and a bumper.
From the point of view of the tracks, I guess they face big problems attracting sponsors who know that the papers are going to be full of Gold Cup reports, not Saturday previews. No coincidence that the decline of this day dates back to the switch to a four day festival.

I’ve just viewed four days of the finest jumps racing this country has to offer. It’s a sunny day, I’m going to get out in the garden & resolutely not turn on the telly.
I couldn’t give a stuff about today’s racing, you could clone Red Rum himself & I doubt anyone else really would either.
It’s a good advert for running the festival from Wednesday to Saturday.

It would have to be well supported by a decent field of runners. As most of our population of classy "Saturday horses" are still recovering from Cheltenham, I think it’s understandable that today’s action is more pedestrian. The seasoned marathon chasers were the only group not to run at Cheltenham, so today’s the day for them.
Other than that, maybe Uttoxeter could stage consolation races for the horses balloted out of the big handicaps?
Racing is still exciting and still a betting medium regardless of the class of the races.
March 19, 2011 at 11:25 #346187The Uttoxeter supporting card used to be ok with the mares chase final; two decentish handicaps are still there but with much less prize money.
I used to go every year but for what they charge it’s not worth it now., especially after 4 days at the Festival.
The Newcastle card is an absolute disgrace. Two televised handicaps with a purse of £5.6k.
A plague on Northern Racing.

Agree – I remember going to the Midlands National card a few years ago and seeing Ackzo take home the big race, Paris Pike the Novices Chase before going on to win the Scottish National the following month and a very decent mare win the Mares Final and eventually end up in the old First National Bank Gold Cup at Ascot.
It’s gone downhill very rapidly
