dominic has been schooling him at home and has got on really well with him. i think that he will get a lot of rides this season for jj. isn’t he living with jj’s daughter?;)
October 25, 2006 at 10:13 #81020Riding a double for the yard at Towcester last weekend will hardly have done Elsworth’s prospects of further rides for JJ any harm.
Someone remind me: are riders unable to claim in the Charlie Hall? I’d have wondered if they’d considered sticking Johnny Farrelly on board to relieve the gelding of 10lb worth of burden otherwise.

October 25, 2006 at 10:29 #81021Jeremy – that wouldn’t be possible as conditionals are unable to claim in Class 1 WFA races.
October 25, 2006 at 10:43 #81022Farrelly is tremendous value for his 10lb claim.
October 25, 2006 at 12:29 #81023Cheers, HJ – I was certainly leaning towards thinking they couldn’t, but the verification is much appreciated.
Luke – Farrelly certainly looks more the part than most 10lb claimers out there, no? He’d already racked up 27 wins in Irish points (at a strike-rate of 12%) from 2002, so he didn’t arrive in Britain desperately short of experience. He’d be one of the emerging riders of 2006 for me along with John Flavin, although of course the latter has unfortunately been sidelined all summer following his horrid accident at Wetherby.

One could now make a tasteless joke involving a pun…but I wont.

October 27, 2006 at 11:56 #81025More tremendous rose-tinted stuff from Mr Lester:
I think if he gets round he wins
and
he’s the forgotten horse of the field
October 27, 2006 at 12:20 #81026His chase form isn’t within the best part of 2 stone of the best of these. The forgotten horse could well be Kingscliff who might be the type to be best caught fresh, for all he seemed to need it in this last year.
October 27, 2006 at 12:27 #81027I read those comments in the RP today … obviously everyone’s entitled to their opinions but you would need to have little or no understanding of horse racing to come out with a statement like that.
Flabbergasted :o
October 27, 2006 at 12:39 #81028its clear that iris’s gift and tony mccoy didnt work well together. mccoys bullish style didnt suit the grey. he jumped well on his chasing debut for barry geretey at lingfield. think he will be a different horse this season
October 27, 2006 at 18:30 #81029cheers dave, thats what we’re hoping too! he’s been schooling really well, hope we’ve found the key. just hope he puts in a good performance, no excuses this time! jonjo say’s the horse is spot on, so we’ll wait and see.
AP is the best jock about, but his style doesn’t suit every horse. he wasn’t jocked off as such, but the horse jumped so well for dominic that they thought it’s worth trying him in the race.
anybody going to wetherby tomorrow?
October 27, 2006 at 19:04 #81030I’ll be there. Looking forward to it immensely. Pity Black Jack Ketchum won’t be there but still a cracking card.
October 27, 2006 at 19:09 #81031Sorry for being thick but what was the reason for BJK not running?
October 27, 2006 at 19:11 #81032Ground I think.
October 27, 2006 at 19:35 #81033yes it was the ground, looking forward to it too. leant the bookies all my doe at uttoxeter today, try to get it back tomorrow! come and say hello dj.
October 27, 2006 at 21:21 #81034I find it incredibly strange that AP is being blamed for the patent fact that Iris’s Gift can’t jump!!!!! I like AP but I’m not the biggest fan in the world; there are plenty of other jocks I’d prefer to have ride my horses – but blaming him for IG jumping like his legs are tied together is a nonsense, IMO.
Good luck to connections but I fear you’ll need it – the horse can’t jump!

October 28, 2006 at 08:41 #81035Decision to replace McCoy is apparently based on continuity. Thus far the horse displays a high cruising speed but jumping problems may have left its chase form well short of that over hurdles. Whether the horse retains the same ability is another matter.
No-one can deny that McCoy is amongst the top rank of jumps riders ever, but I agree that his forceful style may not suit horses that aren’t natural jumpers or lack confidence. His army of fans doubtless think different.
Being southern based I have not seen a lot of Dominic Elsworth, but he has the reputation of a talented horseman and I doubt the Smiths tolerate fools. He isn’t Mccoy but will sit more quietly which may benefit the horse.
Incidentally it is the Pricewise horse in the RP today.
